MELBOURNE STARS WBBL|04 V JANUARY 1, 2019 MELBOURNE RENEGADES FACT SHEET LIBRARY Path to the Australian Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) Women’s T20 interstate cricket dates back to December 2006 when Cricket Victoria arranged a match between Victoria and New South Wales at the Punt Road Oval, Richmond, which Victoria won. From the 2007/08 season onwards, various women’s T20 tournaments have been held featuring combinations of states and the ACT. The Australian Women’s T20 Cup began in the 2009/10 season and continued to the end of 2014/15. At that time the seven teams from the states and the ACT played each other twice leading up to a final. Establishment of the WBBL In July 2015, Cricket Australia announced the establishment of the Australian Women’s Big Bash League, to be known as the WBBL, beginning in season 2015/16. The tournament is currently contested by eight teams across the six states, aligned with the eight sides in the men’s T20 Big Bash League (BBL). There are two teams in Sydney and Melbourne and one each in the other state capitals. WBBL|04 runs from December 1, 2018 until January 26, 2019. The fixture comprises 59 matches - 56 qualifying matches played at major centres around Australia with teams playing each other twice, followed by both semi-finals on January 19 to be played at the same location and hosted by the top-ranked team, with the final to be played on Australia Day. Coach: Tim Coyle Kristen Beams (Captain, Melbourne Stars), born in Launceston in 1984, is an Australian cricketer who is captain of the Victorian team in the Women’s National Cricket League. She has represented Australia internationally in ODI and T20 matches since 2014, and played her only Test match for Australia in August 2015 in the Women’s Ashes in England. She has captured many wickets against the world’s best batters with her right-arm leg spin and also is a handy batter. For 2017/18, she was named Victorian One-Day Player of the Season, winning the Sharon Tredrea Award. Amy Satterthwaite (Captain, Melbourne Renegades), born in Christchurch in 1986, is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for Canterbury Magicians in the New Zealand State League’s ODI and T20 competitions. She has represented New Zealand internationally in ODI and T20 since 2007. She has played in the Women’s Cricket World Cup and the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup on multiple occasions. She is an accomplished left-hand batter and a right-arm medium pace and off-break bowler. She was named the WBBL|03 competition’s and the Renegades’ Player of the Season in February 2018. In 2016/17 she became the first player in Women’s ODI to score four consecutive centuries and was ICC ODI Player of 2017. In the blockbuster double header, the women’s match was played as the curtain-raiser for the same two men’s teams in the BBL. A crowd of 12,901 attended the women’s game, a world record for a women’s domestic competition. The event was televised live with a peak of 439,000 viewers and a national average of 372,000. This was the perfect way to introduce girls to the sport and to inspire them to participate in women’s cricket. Melbourne Stars won the toss and elected to bat first, with the match starting at 1.45 pm. The Melbourne Renegades bowlers restricted the runs early in the Stars’ innings, with the score being 4/8 at one stage. Renegades bowlers Molly Strano (5/15) and Shabnim Ismail (3/10) dominated, with the Stars’ innings ending at 9/85 after 20 overs. Mignon du Preez top-scored for the Stars, with 36 runs off 48 balls. In reply, Melbourne Renegades scored 5/86 in 19.5 overs, winning the match by 5 wickets with 1 ball remaining. Sophie Molineux was run out for 30 off 46 balls. Player of the match was Molly Strano, Renegades off-spinner. At the conclusion of WBBL|03, she was the Renegades’ leading wicket taker in the WBBL, with 39 wickets in 28 games. Many families and female cricket lovers came to cheer on their local teams, a most encouraging factor for the continued success of the short format of the game. And the Rain Came! – WBBL|02, 2016/17 In the first rain-shortened local derby between the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades, the Duckworth-Lewis method was used to determine the outcome of the match. On January 1, 2017, in front of a record WBBL crowd of 24,547, the Stars won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 3/127 in their 20 overs, with Meg Lanning, Stars captain, contributing a scintillating 64 runs off 53 balls, with 6 fours, and Emma Inglis hitting 38 off 43 balls, with 4 fours. In response, Renegades captain, Rachel Priest, with drizzle around, batted with purpose from the outset to stay ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par score, hitting a remarkable 31 runs off 19 balls, including 7 fours in the first 16 deliveries she faced, and with a strike rate of 163.15. The Renegades score was 1/52 after 5.3 overs, when the match was abandoned. With the Duckworth- Lewis method implemented, the Renegades were deemed to have won by 9 wickets. Rachel Priest, player of the match All Tied Up! – WBBL|03, 2017/18 A match to be recorded as one of the closest encounters in WBBL history took place at the MCG on January 20, 2018 between the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades, with the scores tied after both teams had completed their 20- over innings.
