History of the Big Bash League The Big Bash League is an Australian professional Twenty20 cricket league, which was established in 2011 by Cricket Australia. The Big Bash League replaced the previous competition, the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, and features eight city-based franchises instead of the six state teams which had participated previously. BBL matches are played in Australia during the summer in the months of December and January. Of the eight teams in the tournament, five have won the title at least once. The Perth Scorchers are the most successful team in the league's history, winning the title three times, including consecutively for two seasons in 2013–14 and 2014–15. They were also the champions of Big Bash League 2016-17, and hold the record for reaching the final of the tournament the most times, doing so consecutively in the first four seasons. The other four teams to have won the title are the Sydney Sixers in the inaugural season (2011–12), the Brisbane Heat in the second season (2012–13), the Sydney Thunder in 2015–16 and the Adelaide Strikers in 2017-18. Earlier, the top two teams in the tournament used to qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament. It was an annual international Twenty20 competition played between the top domestic teams from various nations. However, the CLT20 became defunct from 2015 onwards. In February 2015, Cricket Australia announced that a Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) would commence in the 2015–16 season, with teams aligned to the men's competition. The teams share the names and colours of the men's BBL teams. Accordingly, there are two teams from Sydney and Melbourne and one team from Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. The inaugural Women's Big Bash League was won by the Sydney Thunder (WBBL) against the Sydney Sixers (WBBL). Currently, the salary cap for a team is $1.60 million. Under the cap, a team can sign a total of 18 contracted players consisting of a minimum of 2 rookie contracts and a maximum of 2 overseas players. In addition, 2 overseas replacement players can also be signed by a team. With a national record 111 Test matches played for his country, he captained the side in 80 Tests and 218 One Day Internationals. He holds the records for the most Test runs by a New Zealander (7172) and the most One Day International runs and matches by a New Zealander (8007 and 279). During his captaincy he led his side to Test series victories against India, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Fleming captained New Zealand in the historic first Twenty20 International of the world, played against Australia in 2005. The Perth Scorchers - Adam Voges Adam Voges , coach of both the Western Australian state side and the Perth Scorchers, took over the positions in May 2018 when Justin Langer was appointed the national coach. Voges had an excellent career in the BBL as his statistics show. In 49 innings (54 matches) he totalled 1040 runs with a strike rate of 123.96 and an average of 28.11. His bowling statistics were 6 innings, 3 for 76 at an economy rate of 6.91. He took 19 catches and was awarded “Man of the Match” once. Glenn Maxwell – A Much Travelled Player At 30 years of age, it is not unreasonable to describe Glenn Maxwell as “much travelled” when you take into account that he has represented the following teams in various forms of the game: Australia, Delhi Daredevils, Fitzroy-Doncaster, Hampshire, Hampshire 2nd XI, Kings XI Punjab, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Mumbai Indians, Victoria, Victoria Second XI, Victoria Under-19s and Yorkshire. A batting all-rounder, Maxwell is known for his unconventional stroke making, making it difficult for the opposing captain to set the field for his batting. Maxwell is also a handy off-spinner and an outstanding fieldsman. Maxwell had a solid 2017–18 Big Bash League season, with scores of 8 (5), 4 (6), 50 (39), 33 (23), 60 (39), 31* (16), 28 (16), 1 (3) and 84 (47). During the year a report came out which argued that Maxwell was the most effective fielder in the history of the Big Bash. In 2018 Fox sports included Maxwell as an all- rounder in its Best BBL Team of All Time. He made his Test debut at Lord’s in 2004 playing for his nation until his last Test in Sri lanka in December 2010. His One Day International career also commenced in 2004 in England. His last ODI match was against India in October 2014. His first T20 international match was against New Zealand in February 2006; his last was against England in April 2016. He holds the record for the world’s best bowling performance in an ODI match with 6/43, against Zimbabwe in February 2013. His half-brother Darren Bravo has also represented the West Indies in the Test ,ODI and T20 arenas. • Beware Milestones
DECIDE: How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making Beware milestones Having convinced you to improve your measurement of what really matters in your organisation so that you can make better decisions, I must provide a word of caution. Sometimes when we introduce new measures we actually hurt decision making. Take the effect that milestones have on people. Milestones as the name infers are solid markers of progress on a journey. You have either made the milestone or you have fallen short. There is no better example of the effect of milestones on decision making than from sport. Take the game of cricket. If you don’t know cricket all you need to focus in on is one number, 100. That number represents a century of runs by a batsman in one innings and is a massive milestone. Careers are judged on the number of centuries a batsman scores. A batsman plays the game to score runs by hitting a ball sent toward him at varying speeds of up to 100.2 miles per hour (161.3 kilometres per hour) by a bowler from 22 yards (20 metres) away. The 100.2 mph delivery, officially the fastest ball ever recorded, was delivered by Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan. Shoaib was nicknamed the Rawalpindi Express! Needless to say, scoring runs is not dead easy. A great batting average in cricket at the highest levels is 40 plus and you are among the elite when you have an average over 50. Then there is Australia’s great Don Bradman who had an average of 99.94 with his next nearest rivals being South Africa’s Graeme Pollock with 60.97 and England’s Herb Sutcliffe with 60.63.

  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

Over the past seventeen years this format has grown leaps and bounds and is very keenly watched by all stakeholders involved with the game. The popularity and the growth of T20 has led to cricket boards taking this format with uttermost seriousness and every major cricket playing nation has its own international team and domestic league. Over the past seventeen years the strategies involved in succeeding in this format have also evolved and teams at the international, franchise and domestic level are trying to evolve their playbook to gain a comparative advantage. Seventeen years since T20 cricket started, preparation for matches globally have changed from casual chats in team meetings. For coaches and captains, dossiers of 25 pages are common; these dissect the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, suggest set-plays, which are the optimum ways that a bowler can set up a batsman, and explain the best parts of the ground to target and which end might suit each bowler best This research paper will delve into a potential winning strategy for a T20 side.
