THE INNER RING MAY 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope lockdown is treating you all well. Powerplay I have set myself various goals for the lockdown period, of which one of them was to read more. I have always enjoyed reading about the journeys of successful people and their habits, sacrifices and lessons learned along those journeys. One such fascinating journey is that of Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company from 2005 to February 2020. “The ride of a lifetime” is a fascinating reflection on his innovative way of thinking and relentless journey towards excellence. “I talk a lot about “the relentless pursuit of perfection”. In practice this can mean a lot of things, and it is hard to define. It is a mindset, more than a specific set of rules. It is not about perfectionism at all costs. It is about creating an environment in which people refuse to accept mediocrity. It is about pushing back against the urge to say that “good enough” is good enough.” – Robert Iger Thank you all for the positive feedback received last week. It was good to at least have a quick e-catchup and confirmation that you are still going strong. I value your input and therefore urge you to please continue sending your feedback, ideas and thoughts. THE INNER RING Feedback from last week’s “inswinger” – Who is your favourite Dolphins player of all time? The names of Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Hashim Amla, Shaun Pollock, Malcolm Marshall, Barry Richards, Mike Procter, and the current Proteas, Keshav, David and Andile came up quite frequently. We are indeed blessed with a wonderful and proud history of producing world class players. May it long continue… Our honourable President, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, shared a Covid-19 message on Sunday, 24 May, in which he indicated that the whole of South Africa will move to lockdown Level 3 on 1 June. He indicated that as part of the measures for Level 3 the national curfew would be lifted, most economic activity would return, alcohol could be sold and there would be no time limit on exercise. The sporting world, which includes our beloved sport of cricket, is generally still waiting with bated breath on the exact implications and the various rules regarding “return to train” and “return to play” protocols. Cricket South Africa is in the process of finalising a guiding document, which will incorporate all the requirements as soon as published in the Government Gazette. Inside the boundary rope Let me take you on a short journey down memory lane… Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium Kingsmead has hosted 25 Test matches since re-admission, which includes the iconic first home Test match for the South African team. This match was played on 13-17 November 1992 against India and was also the launching pad for the Friendship series in a historic return for South Africa to international cricket. The match result was a draw. Summarised result sheet: - India won the toss and elected to field first - SA 1st Innings 254 (K. Wessels 118, J. Rhodes 41, K. Dev 3/43, R. Shastri 2/38) - India 1st Innings 277 (P. Amre 103, K. More 55, B. McMillan 3/52, O. Henry 2/56) - SA 2nd Innings 176/3(A. Hudson 55, J. Cook 43, J. Srinath 2/42, A. Kumble 1/36) During this match Sachin Tendulkar became the first ever cricketer to be adjudged run out by a third umpire. Incredible to note that two KZN legends, Jonty Rhodes and Andrew Hudson, were directly involved with the run-out. THE INNER RING PMB City Oval The picturesque City Oval has hosted two One Day International (ODI) matches, both of them in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. The first ODI was played between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In the first over of the match, Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas took 4 wickets, including a hat-trick with the first three balls of the match, the first time this has occurred in international cricket. He finished with figures of 6/25 from 9.1 overs, as Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 10 wickets. Hollywoodbets Dolphins Our head coach, Imraan Khan, made his provincial debut against Boland in 2003. He went on to play more than 330 matches in the various formats for his beloved KZN/Dolphins, captained the team on 86 occasions and was awarded with a Test debut in 2009 against Australia. He was a left-handed batsman with a highest score of 195 and best bowling figures of 6/43 as an off-break bowler. Immy is a keen footballer and an avid Liverpool supporter. He is waiting anxiously for the English Premier League to resume… Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal Our head coach, Roger Telemachus, made his international debut against Pakistan in 1998. He went on to represent the Proteas in 40 matches in the various white ball formats in which he took 58 wickets. He earned two Man of the Match awards against Sri Lanka with impressive bowling spells. His highlight from a team perspective was the 438 game in which he played a very important role with the ball when he picked up the wickets of Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, and he also managed to play his part with the bat towards the end of the chase. Roger was also involved in probably the most bizarre stoppage in the history of cricket, when “calamari stopped play”. During a regional match he was bowling to Daryll Cullinan who hit the ball into the vendor area and straight into a frying pan of calamari. It was about ten minutes before the ball was cool enough for the umpires to remove the grease. Roger is a solid golfer with a handicap of 8, he also loves his football and supports Manchester United. Needless to note, he is not too anxious about the resumption of the EPL… Hollywoodbets KZN Inland Our head coach, Yusuf Abdulla, made his provincial debut against Border in 2006. He went on to play more than 150 matches in the various formats in which he took more than 200 wickets. As a left arm medium-fast bowler he represented the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL and was part of the Protea T20 World Cup squad in 2009 but unfortunately did not play. He did THE INNER RING however represent South Africa in two T20 Internationals, with a definite highlight picking up the scalp of Ricky Ponting. Yusuf is also an avid Liverpool fan and joins Immy in the wait for the EPL to resume… In the stands Governance The KZN Governance structures have continued with its oversight role and a variety of meetings have taken place on various communication platforms.
