ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP 8 SECTION 02 | ABOUT TOURNAMENT SECTION 02 ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT ICC U19 CRICKET WORLD CUP 9 SECTION 02 | ABOUT TOURNAMENT ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT This is the 13th edition of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup and the second time that it is being held in South Africa, the first being 22 years ago. The event will take place between 17 January and 9 February across eight venues in the four cities of Benoni, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Potchefstroom. The warm-up matches are schedule between 12 and 15 January across six venues in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The past winners of the tournament are India (four times) Australia (three times), Pakistan (two-time winners), England, South Africa and West Indies, winning it each once. Automatic qualification was gained by the top 11 Full Members from the 2018 edition – Afghanistan Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The remaining five positions were filled via a qualification process which began in July 2018 involving 50 teams across eight qualifying events. Five regional qualifiers were confirmed in August 2019, with Japan and Nigeria both qualifying for their first ever ICC World Cup, joined by Canada, Scotland and the UAE. The 16 teams have been divided in groups of four each with the top two sides from each group due to advance to the Super League. These eight teams will compete for the title of U19 Cricket World Cup champions and the top eight placings. Teams finishing the group stages in third and fourth place will challenge for the Plate championship. At the culmination of the event, the Plate league will determine the eight teams’ placings, nine to 16.
