Tuesday March 23, 2021 $1 VAT Inclusive More must be done to help small businesses PRESIDENT of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla De Peiza, believes that there needs to be some economic diversification, but with the opportunity of enfranchisement for small businesses to build out the economy. De Peiza delivered this sentiment during The Sunday Roast of the DLP, titled Estimates 2021-2022: DLP Responds. She made the argument that diversification of an economy is an exercise that is best undertaken when the economy is booming, and noted that there had not been a boom for a long time. She also acknowledged that in the last three years of the DLP administration in 2015, 2016 and 2017, there was growth but it was negligible. De Peiza explained that since January 2020, the DLP had framed a programme which was designed to enfranchise GETTING A TREAT!: With restrictions being in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Barbadian shoppers and Barbadians. Australia to rescue thousands as Sydney faces worst floods in 60 years

PITT TOWN, Australia – Australia was set on Monday to evacuate thousands more people from suburbs in Sydney’s west, bat- tered by the worst flooding in 60 years, with torrential rains expected to continue for another day or two. Reuters images showed submerged intersections, marooned livestock and cars up to their wind- shields in water, out of which poked the tops of street signs, as three days of rain swelled rivers in the most populous state of New South Wales (NSW). “This is an ongoing sit- uation that is evolving and is extremely danger- ous,” Prime Minister told parliament. Yesterday, a whole dolphin fish was the main attraction at the Bridgetown Fish Market with vendors at the various stalls preparing the catch for customers to come. While dolphin is always a favourite for locals, there was also marlin while flying fish was being sold for $20 per pack. This week will make it one month since the market resumed business and while there is optimism about the season, it is a different experience in the market.

A new market experience Clients are now entering from the west gate of the facility and directed by security to follow protocols by having their temperature taken and hands sanitised. For persons walking along the area, some vendors are asking potential clients what kind of fish they would like so they can deliver the order directly to them. One popular vendor, Wendy, told The Barbados Advocate it was a bit slow yesterday, but the vendors are expecting sales to increase later in the week. Meanwhile, the pandemic has forced fish vendors to seek alternative ways to sell their products, with several of them now using social media. On Facebook’s Marketplace, about a dozen vendors – some from the Bridgetown Fish Market – are selling snapper, flying fish, swordfish, and other popular fish through the virtual market.
