RETURN TO SHORE ROAD RESERVE

Men’s Premier Grade – Parnell vs. Birkenhead, 23 January 2016, was the opening game :

Pitch perfect - the brand new, virgin block – immaculately prepared but untested! The Birkenhead Skipper paid Groundsman Dave Keane the ultimate compliment – he won the toss and elected to bat!

His confidence was justified - 313 runs scored on Day 1., 469 on Day 2. in this Trophy game. Then,on Tuesday evening 2 Feb., in the T20 Plate Final, 279 runs were scored in the 40 overs bowled. 1061 runs scored in 2.5 days play – congratulations to our Groundsman and all involved in laying this new block! Parnell won both games - beating Birkenhead outright by 4 and, in the T20 Plate Final, Eden Roskill, by 11 runs. A very auspicious return to Shore Road Reserve, our Home Ground.

And practice nets, too! Brand new, 7 lane, outdoor nets which replace the 5 lane nets built in 2002. These were available from January 2016.

Tremendous thanks to the Orakei Local Board and to Council for this superb renovation of Shore Road Reserve! The playing surfaces are great for all ages to enjoy.

NZ CRICKET’S VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - 2015 2015/16 Bryan Haggitt received this Award from Sir Richard Hadlee at the ANZ NZ Cricket Awards Dinner:

The citation read: “Bryan Haggitt has shown a huge amount of passion and commitment towards the Parnell CC as a player and administrator since joining in 1954 as a 12 year old. His contribution to the club, NZ’s oldest having been founded in 1858 and currently with 750 players, has been extraordinary over the past 60 years or so and includes the following: Committee member (1964/65, 1996/97 to 2007/08) Hon. Treasurer (2003/04) Hon. Secretary and Board member (2008/09 to 2014/15) President (2007 to 2011) Life Member since 2011 Bryan is a past winner of the Auckland CA Carson Cup as Club Administrator of the Year (2010/11), as well as PCC’s W J Dinnison Cup for Prowess, Sportsmanship and Club Spirit (inaugural winner in 1957/58). In addition he has been the collator of all club playing results and statistics, and publisher of the PCC annual report since 2006, a very fine publication that covers the playing results of the junior and senior sections of the club, PCC representative players over that season, club finances, club officers and bearers going back to 1884, aggregated club playing records and statistics going back to 1894/95 etc., (please see 2014/15 version attached). Bryan has performed the role of Manager of the PCC men’s premier team since 2008/09, a role that he still holds. He has organised and led Parnell CC’s Adaptive Cricket Day in conjunction with St Kentigern Boys School over the past 5 seasons, this introducing and developing cricket skills for special needs children across Auckland. As well as this he was the lead organiser of PCC’s 150 year anniversary celebrations. Finally, and possibly the most impressively in recent years, Bryan produces a PCC Newsletter that is sent to all club members most weeks over the season (please see latest version attached). This keeps the junior and senior club members informed of the latest results, upcoming fixtures and events, coaching opportunities etc. while also reflecting on the club’s very strong history by providing quiz questions based on past club photos which he holds. Bryan is a wonderful club historian while also having a good eye for the future. He has quite simply been an extraordinary club member for some 60 years. He still contributes significantly attending most monthly PCC Board meetings as Life Member. He would be a very worthy winner of the NZC Volunteer of the Year Award, and his nomination by PCC is strongly supported by Auckland CA.”

6. QUEEN’S and INTERNATIONAL HONOURS

New Zealand Cricket has made outstanding strides in recent times. The McCullum/Hesson era has heralded successes never before experienced. For New Zealand to be T20 no. 1, ODI no. 2 and to have reached Test no. 2 (but now 5) status is simply unheard of. And consider as well:  Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World and one of it’s Five Cricketers of the Year  Suzie Bates Wisden’s Leading Woman Player in the World  Brendan McCullum Invited to deliver the prestigious Cowdrey Lecture to the MCC in addition to being chosen as another of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

Not only players - the Queen has honoured local cricket administrators in recent New Year and Birthday lists - Cornwall’s Rex Smith, Papatoetoe’s Gary Troup and North Shore’s Barry Sinclair. All have given wonderful service to their clubs and, Rex in particular, to Auckland Cricket. Marvellous that they have been so honoured!

Barry Sinclair, the diminutive batsman who made his name for and New Zealand, played a season for Parnell when he first moved to Auckland around 1970. He then settled across the Harbour and become a tower of strength for the North Shore CC especially in organising their legendary fund raising celebrity lunches. Barry played 21 Tests – 1148 runs at 29.43, and your Editor witnessed his masterly 138 (highest of 3 tons) vs. South Africa at – against a very sharp attack including Peter Pollock.

Mark had a sensational summer. For Hong Kong, he helped them qualify for the World T20 Cup only to be eliminated early in the Tournament. Mark, now 21, first played for Hong Kong at 16 – ESPNcricinfo writer Peter Della Penna, on 27 February, comments: “Mark Chapman Hong Kong's best player, the 21-year-old made vital contributions of 30 and 40 in World T20 Qualifier wins over Ireland and Afghanistan. In unofficial matches, he made an unbeaten 53 off 33 in a win over Zimbabwe ahead of the 2014 World T20, and 50 off 39 in November against Pakistan. In January, he made 157 off 111 balls for Auckland in New Zealand's List A competition. He is also Hong Kong's best fielder and his part-time left-arm orthodox spin will be called upon in India.” Then, back with the Aces in March, Mark played the final match vs Wellington and hit 73 off only 74 balls. This was in the Aces’ 2nd innings of an extraordinary game – Auckland 152 & 598, Wellington 236 & 308/8. Match was drawn which clinched the Plunket Shield for Auckland despite the Aces losing to CD in the final game when Mark was absent.

For HK: Several stunning catches 124* on ODI debut – HK vs UAE Amazing improvisations!

For the Aces: Ford Trophy 157 off only 111 balls vs CD With Lockie & the Georgie Pie T20 Trophy Above photos from ESPNcricinfo, NZ Cricket & Auckland Cricket websites

LOCKIE FERGUSON - PARNELL and AUCKLAND ACES

A very significant season for Lockie – he had ended 2014/15 with a flourish and then went from strength to strength in 2015/16. Lockie’s speed was exceptional – he took 31 1st Class wickets @ 22.12 and, in the National Statistics of those taking 15+ wickets, only AM Ellis had a better average (33 @ 18.57). Lockie’s 3 “5 fors” - 5/61 vs ND late December and then, in March, 5/68 vs Otago and 5/37 – a personal best – vs Wellington were crucial to the Auckland Aces winning the Plunket Shield with a game to spare. His 5 vs Wellington were all behind by ‘keeper Brad Cachopa. Intimidating to say the least, Craig Speakman’s photos say it all:

11. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The 2015/16 financial year and cricket season was another successful one for PCC as it strives to raise the bar in all that is does for its players, volunteers and supporters, sponsors and commercial partners, and the game itself. I summarise the year as follows:

1. Overview The 2015/16 season started with junior playing numbers up 13% on prior season post the success of the Cricket World Cup held in NZ and Australia in Feb / March 2015. With over 800 players across the junior and senior sections of the club our playing numbers were the highest they had been for several seasons. While the Auckland Council’s significant upgrade of the Shore Rd playing surface resulted in the increased use of the Orakei Domain pre-Christmas the Club was able to fully utilize the ground, including new 7-lane outdoor practice nets, from late December.

On-field results were strong overall although the Club failed to win a Men’s Premier title despite leading the Hedley Howarth 2-day competition for most of the season only to be overtaken in the final match. The Club had 2 players chosen for the Auckland Aces, one contracted as one of 15 professional players for the season and the other promoted during the latter half of the season. Junior rep results were very pleasing while representation as EDCA level was about as expected ie. proportional to playing numbers.

Financial results were in line with budget after some prudent spending took place. Capital expenditure was minimal.

PCC’s performance in meeting a range of targets as set by Auckland CA in our Service Level Agreement with this organization, who are a key funder of all 16 clubs in the region, was very good and ahead of almost all other clubs.

Volunteer relations were positive overall, this reflective of the efforts and experience of our Junior Committee, Junior Grade Co- ordinators, and Board.

2. Playing Results: Junior ACA titles won (from grade 6 to grade 9/10):  Year 7 Premier Championship  Year 9/10 Premier Championship, Limited Overs

In terms of Auckland Districts rep cricket EDCA won the Peter Badley Shield for the second consecutive season across the 5 Districts, PCC providing 38% of the players to EDCA teams ie. grades 7 to 12, male and female, which was in line with expectations given the respective junior playing numbers of AUCC and GUCC. In some cases, eligible PCC players were unavailable for selection due to the timing of these tournaments over the Dec / Jan months.

Annual junior rep fixtures against neighbouring clubs (grades 3 to 7): v. Grafton United CC, Nov 2015, 6 wins, 2 losses v. Auckland University CC, Dec 2015, 8 wins, 2 losses v. Howick Pakuranga CC, Feb 2016, 8 wins, 2 losses v. Cornwall CC, March 2016, 3 wins, 5 losses (and 2 runs away from being 4 all)

These results were encouraging when considering AUCC, HPCC and especially CCC all had more junior playing numbers than PCC during 2015/16. The Club has recently agreed with Cornwall CC to play for the Crowe / Morgan Trophy in future years as the overall winner across all junior grades on our annual rep day with this club.

PCC was once again served by an experienced and hard working group of Grade-Coordinators whose planning and communication with parents remained critical to the Junior Section being efficiently. Parent feedback provided in the post season survey has been very positive overall. The Junior Section has also been well served by Peter Speakman as its Junior Chairman over the past 2 seasons, Peter vacating this role in March and since replaced by Jeremy Boucher.

The Club continued to provide professional coaching to all junior players from Grade 4 and above, at no additional cost to parents, every 3 weeks across the entire season, these sessions also providing the opportunity for our volunteer coaches to learn more about the technical aspects of the game as well as how best to run a training session. The Club plans to strengthen the quality and frequency of these pro-coaching sessions even further from 2016/17.

Of critical importance to player development, on-field successes, off-field harmony and overall fun and enjoyment over the season is of course the number and capabilities of our volunteer parents as coaches, managers, umpires and scorers. After coaching junior cricket at PCC for 10 seasons now I am more convinced than ever that the sharing of the workload across all team parents is a key ingredient to having a happy and successful cricket season and as part of that PCC will continue to provide training sessions for its volunteer coaches, umpires and scorers early in the season.

12. I would encourage all former players of the game to give something back to the sport by becoming a coach of a PCC junior team, the intrinsic rewards after providing sufficient effort and coaching support for the players are sure to be very satisfying.

I would like to thank the following people in particular for their contributions over the year:  All volunteers who give up their time to see the Club and their respective team(s) enjoy a happy and successful season.  All Grade Coordinators (grades 1 to 10) and Members of the Junior Committee  Peter Speakman for his time and strong commitment spent as Junior Chairman over the past 2 seasons, and as an administrator within PCC junior cricket over the past 10 seasons.  Phil Lindberg as PCC Rep Grade Coordinator.  James Dudson and Murray Davis for your roles in representing PCC on the ECDA Committee, selecting EDCA teams, ensuring ACA Districts tournament successes etc.

Senior ACA titles won:  Grade 2A, One Day Championship (Opotiki Cup)  Grade Senior B2, Limited Overs Championship  Premier Men, T20 Plate Championship  Premier Men, best and fairest all round team as voted by Auckland Umpires (Spirit of Cricket Award)

Men’s Premier Grade, Individual Awards:  Ben Horne, most keeping dismissals (SR Speed Trophy)  Tim McIntosh, most runs (Auckland Cricket Trophy)  Tim McIntosh, Players’ Player of the Season (Laurie Schnauer Cup)

Our Premier Men’s team finished runners up in the ACA Hedley Howarth 2-day competition challenging closely throughout the season, lead into the final game only to be overtaken by Takapuna on the last day’s play. The Team performed admirably and was a credit to the Club under the astute captaincy of Dave Goddard and the highly experienced and effective coaching of Ian Trott who has now completed his 9th consecutive season with PCC. Ian’s loyalty to PCC, as well as his proven coaching ability and all round organisational skills are greatly appreciated.

Of particular note was the of Tim McIntosh who scored over 1,250 runs across the season which saw him win the highly coveted Laurie Schnauer Cup for the second year running.

Our Men's Second XI finished mid table in the ACA Men's Premier Reserve Minor competition.

Our Men's Third XI won the ACA Men's B2 Grade one-day competition and came third in the ACA Men’s B2 two-day competition. They did get promoted to a higher grade for the 2016/17 season however and this reward was well deserved.

One of our top sides in the One Day competition won the One Day 2A Cup – congratulations to the PCC Rajput Boys.

In addition, Bryan Haggitt, PCC Life Member, was awarded the prestigious NZ Cricket Volunteer of the Year award at NZC’s annual awards event in March. This award was thoroughly deserved given Bryan’s devotion and absolute commitment to the club since the 1960’s, a contribution that has been quite extraordinary.

I would like to thank the small group of the Men’s Premier team supporters (mostly parents) for your very loyal following of the team across the season. Bryan Haggitt (Men’s Prems) and Richard Humphries (Men’s Third XI) have also been very committed, and effective, in their respective roles as Team Managers.

Women’s Cricket: Women’s/Girl’s Cricket has had a renaissance in recent years at PCC due to a renewed focus on growing the girls game within our junior grades, this initiative being well led by Dominic Drumm. This season the Club fielded 5 teams with 2 of these marking a return to the soft cricket ball competition held at Melville Park on Saturday mornings. Participation in this competition was the result of a focus on younger girls choosing to play in an “all-girl” environment as opposed to those who preferred to play in mixed teams.

The Club expects female numbers to continue to grow providing a strong pipeline for our more competitive grades playing hardball in the Auckland-wide competitions. Within these grades PCC fielded Under 12, Under 14 and Emerging Hearts teams. The Under 12 team was in development mode following the promotion of many experienced girls from last year’s championship winning team to the Under 14 level. The Emerging Hearts team was a joint venture between Parnell and AUCC and signals the pathway for younger girls into senior levels of cricket and is seen as a stepping stone to Parnell’s ultimate goal of once again having a Premier Women’s side.

Emerging Hearts is essentially a Premier Reserve Grade for Women with the PCC/AUCC team age ranging from 13-16 yrs. Results of second in the 20/20 Competition and fourth in the 40 over competition exceeded all expectations and signals a very bright future for these girls.

A special thanks goes to Jonathan McInroy for his dedication and time coaching all three hardball grades midweek and taking the Emerging Hearts team on Saturdays. As a result of the commitment of the club, dedicated parents and girls, along with Jonathan’s coaching, our girls are very strong technically compared to many other clubs’ players. All but 3 of the EDCA Under 15 squad was provided by Parnell with 3 girls going on to represent Auckland at the National Under 15 tournament. PCC is committed at the highest level to the development and growth of Women’s/Girl’s cricket and we are well placed to take advantage of the new strategic direction of NZ Cricket in also focussing on female participation in the sport.

13. 3. Representation The following senior players gained higher honours over the season:  secured an Auckland Aces contract for the second season running and played in most of the 4-day Plunket Shield matches across the season (ACA winning this trophy for the first time since 2009/10).  Mark Chapman was promoted to the Auckland Aces Ford Trophy (50 over) and Plunket Shield teams in the latter half of the season. Mark also represented Hong Kong in the T20 Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament in February.  Ben Horne (Captain), Jessie Simpson, Mike Ravlic, Ganesh Ratnasabapathy - Auckland A  Lexy Bassett, Ede Rogan - Auckland Under 15 Emerging Hearts  Callum Douglas, Will St John – Auckland Under 17  Hamish McLean, Will St John and Jack Coman - Auckland Developing Future Aces squad

4. PCC Board of Directors The 2015/16 financial year began with 4 changes to the PCC Board: Greg James, Dominic Drumm, Venu Bhamidipaty and myself having been added following recent retirements. In addition, Peter and Craig Speakman remained on the Board, Peter as Junior Chairman until 31 March when he resigned and was replaced by Jeremy Boucher. Rod Smith has remained as PCC President over 2015/16 and has attended all Board meetings upon the invitation of the Chairman, as has Bryan Haggitt (Life Member). Respective roles have been as follows:  Chairman: Craig Presland  Junior Chairman: Peter Speakman, from 1.4.2016 Jeremy Boucher  Senior Chairman: Venu Bhamidipaty  Honorary Treasurer: Greg James  Honorary Secretary: Craig Speakman

In addition, the Board has established six of Sub-Committees (work streams), current responsibilities as follows:  Facilities and Grounds: Rod Smith (Head), Bryan Haggitt, Craig Presland  Finance / Planning / Constitution: Craig Speakman (Head), Greg James  Sponsorship: Venu Bhamidipaty (Head)  Marketing / Schools / Female Cricket: Dominic Drum (Head)  Coaching: Greg James (Head), Venu Bhamidipaty, Jeremy Boucher  Volunteer Relations: Jeremy Boucher (Head), Dominic Drumm

Our Club Manager, Steve Hurdley, has had an active role to play across on all 6 Sub-Committees.

I would like to thank PCC’s hard working Board, Rod, Bryan and Steve and for their strong efforts and commitment, and absolute passion for PCC and the game itself, over the past 12 months. The level of knowledge and experience, as well as ability to roll the sleeves up and makes things happen, has been impressive.

5. Strategic Plan, August 2016 to July 2019 Our Board, Rod, Bryan and Steve have recently drafted a 3-year strategic plan after conducting a SWOT analysis of each of the above 6 work streams, and we plan to consult and seek feedback from a wider group within the club from next month. As part of this 3 year plan we have set priorities for our resources (time and $ funds), while this plan has been summarized to a one-page document that will be referred to at all future Board meetings.

6. Facilities and Grounds The club has spent considerable time consulting and planning for the following capital projects:  New grass practice nets  New storage shed  New pavilion  Extension of the Centre

This has involved consultation with the Orakei Local Board, Auckland Council (Town Planning, Parks and Recreation), Grammar Juniors Rugby (GJR) and the Remuera and Parnell Sports Community Charitable Trust (RPSCCT) who are the lessee of the grounds and owner of our clubrooms. As part of this we have commenced negotiations with AC, on behalf of RPSCCT, in relation to the future long term lease of Shore Rd and Bloodworth Park. Given PCC Board approval for the above capital projects, including appropriate and sufficient fundraising plans for each, we plan to lodge resource consent applications in the 2016/17 financial year.

I would like to thank Greg Olliver and Mark Smith for their countless hours so far spent on the above projects, this including planning, architectural drawings, attending key stakeholder meetings, costings, preparation work in relation to resource consent applications etc. These services have been provided by Greg and Mark free of charge to date.

7. Financial Results PCC recorded a small surplus of $2,364 for the year, after depreciation, against a budgeted surplus of $1,455. The club’s subscription rates did not increase from prior year however Membership fees increased in total $ terms due to the growth in junior playing numbers. Funding from ACA reduced slightly in comparison with prior year due to PCC’s lack of affiliation with Last Man Standing teams in 2014/15, this issue was corrected in 2015/16. The club was prudent in its spending throughout the financial year while capital expenditure was minimal and mostly funded by The Peter Badley Trust. 14.

8. Sponsorship PCC remains very grateful for the support from its key commercial partners Ascot Radiology (lead sponsor) and Players Sports – a big thanks to these local businesses for their valued and ongoing contributions which enable the club to provide its high level of coaching and support for its players. We could not provide the same cricket experience for our Members without this funding. Ascot Radiology in particular has been very loyal to PCC since 2011/12 and we have so much to thank this organization for.

9. Schools We have worked very hard to strengthen our relationship with all schools in our catchment including the addition of signed Memorandum’s of Understanding with each school outlining the respective commitments, scope of coaching services that PCC provides, use of respective facilities etc. Our growth in junior playing numbers in 2015/16, and ongoing relationship with these schools, have and will benefit from this work. Of particular mention would be the close association which the club has with St Kentigern Boys School through the efforts of Jonathan McInroy as one of PCC’s professional coaches, and Mr Grayson Aspinall, Deputy Head of the school. Likewise at King’s School, a close liaison through Coach Simon Herbst, assisted by Peter Hickman.

10. Website PCC launched its new website late in July 2015 with on-line registrations, and TJC bookings, flowing through seamlessly from 1st August. We have updated and revised much of the content of our website and now utilise MailChimp technologies when communicating to all PCC Members. Our new website has a very different look and feel with improved content, clarity and navigation.

Our thanks to Ruth Thielke for her work in re-developing our website.

11. Coaching Our experienced and highly capable professional coaching structure, headed by Ian Trott, continued to provide PCC with a point of difference in comparison with other clubs. This level of expertise and commitment from our professional coaching team, including the addition Peter Hickman and Joe Kinghorn-Gray who coached many of our junior players while also playing for the Club, remains a strength of PCC as evidenced by the Club’s representative results against neighbouring clubs (see above).

The Club created the part time role of Junior Coaching Co-ordinator for the first time and this was met by Simon Herbst who also conducted a large portion of junior coaching across the Club. Simon provided his coaching services tirelessly and always with a smile. In addition, the Club utilized the coaching services of Tim McIntosh to a greater extent, at junior and senior level, over the season.

In conjunction with our overall coaching resources and capabilities are of course our training facilities with the Terry Jarvis Centre, our new 7-lane nets on Shore Rd, and the older 4-lane nets on Bloodworth Park. The TJC in particular also sets us apart from other clubs in the Auckland region and has continued to provide a good revenue stream for the Club. Utilisation over the July to October months however often extends beyond capacity with the club now considering extending to a 6-lane facility at the time of the new pavilion being constructed.

Our thanks to all professional coaches for their expertise, perseverance and commitment over the season. Feedback from many parents and players has been very positive.

12. Final Thanks Finally, I would like to thank Steve Hurdley for his loyalty and commitment to the Club over the past 8 years as Club Manager and in particular over the past 12 months while I have performed my role as Chairman of PCC. Well done Steve.

Eden Park – as it was in the 1930s through to 1953 Parnell CC’s Home Ground, shared with University and Eden CC’s, from the 1920s to WW 2, and again from 1967 till 1983. Up to 5 games could be played there at any one time until, in 1956, the West Stand was built separating fully No. 1 from No. 2 grounds. 15. . .OBITUARIES

J.E. (John) KELSO 27 July 1940 – 26 April 2016

.

John Kelso was an invaluable member of the Parnell Juniors for four seasons, 1956/57 to 1959/60. Invaluable - not only was John the opening bowler and lower order, quick scoring batsman but, once he had his Drivers Licence, he ferried half the team from their morning games for Auckland Grammar School to the afternoon game for Parnell. The conveyance was his Father’s Fish Shop van and Alan Graham, John Weir, Doug Dempster and others would tumble out on arrival at Hobson Park or, further afield at Walker or Victoria Parks. The remained of the team would drift in for the 1pm start, usually thanks to direct parental assistance though, in those days, not all families had cars. Quite a scramble as school games didn’t finish until 12 and there was no harbour bridge. As a bowler, John could be decidedly quick but was not always accurate – sometimes a worry to captain and ‘keeper, David Moir. And he could be fiery – an excellent spearhead with the new ball. “New ball” – well, the Club issued the Team with a ball at the start of the season and another in the New Year. Between times, the battered ball was “rejuvenated” by the weekly application of shellac from the tin of French Polish kept in the gear bag! The ball pictured above was presented to John in 1990 to commemorate him scoring 50* - by the looks of it, the french polishing technique to retain/add shine continued way beyond our junior days of the ‘50s and into the Business House days of the ‘90s. A quick scoring bat – very useful when looking for a declaration, John had few inhibitions at the crease and could hit powerfully. John joined the NZ Herald’s Accounts Department on leaving Grammar and was promoted rapidly to Chief Accountant – a position he held till retirement. It was he who oversaw the introduction of computerisation at the Herald. For a good many years he organised and played for Herald teams in City and Suburban cricket. John kept a close eye on all sport including Parnell’s fortunes. Our sincere condolences go to Rosemary, John’s widow, and his family.

Ron Stone played for the Club intermittently from the early 1950s. A member of Auckland Grammar’s 1st XI, a contemporary of John Sparling, Bill Playle, Eric Giles, and Neville Darrow, 1956/57 was Ron’s best year for the Club. Playing for Eastern 2nds he took 20 wickets at 17.30 with his leggies and bowled very lengthy spells in tandem with wily offspinner Ken Jagger (64 at 12.85). Ron also scored 141 runs that season, highest score 43*, at 14.10, but it was in the field that he excelled – the Annual Report of ‘56/57, after commenting favourably on his spinners, added that “Ron Stone was outstanding in the field, the standard of his groundfielding and returns to the wicket being of the very highest order.” He was awarded the Emirali Cup – for “the most improved player in second or lower grades.” Sadly for the Club, Ron headed to Otago University and, also, his stint of Compulsory Miltary Training. After graduating from Otago he went teaching and country service called. Ron went to Hawkes Bay and represented the province at rugby including playing in a Ranfuly Shield challenge against Auckland at Eden Park. Leaving the Bay prior to it’s great Shield era, Ron returned to Auckland in 1963 becoming Physical. Education Master at St. Kentigern College. Very young for such an appointment, Ron proved an outstanding success – his friendly, generous nature made him an immensely popular Phys. Ed. teacher. Being a very understanding Housemaster at Bruce House helped make Ron the legend he became at the College. Ron turned out again for Parnell just occasionally in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and brought along other St. Kentigern teachers, Mike Harris and Dick Park. Ron then he left the College and entered the corporate world of Fletchers bringing a fitness regime into John Hart’s HR Department. Ron remained intensely interested in the affairs of both Auckland Grammar and St. Kentigern. At the latter he was inducted as an Honorary Old Boy. Auckland Grammar, too, Ron scarcely missed an Old Boys’ function or sports fixture at either school. And, in addition, Ron continued to keep a keen interest in the fortunes of Parnell CC. .Portrait photo of Ron above was taken at the New Road Ground, home of Worcestershire CCC. He and Judy were guests of Tim Owen’s dad – Tom was the first “gappie” to St Kentigern College. Tim is now a Deputy Head of Repton School. 16. INTERNATIONALS - HERE and THERE

JUNIOR CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Ultimate Goal: Enjoyment The game of cricket offers a genial mix of individual challenge amidst the companionship of mates within a team fabric. Opportunity for some to shine and dominate is pronounced in this curiously beguiling game. The challenge for administrators and coaches alike is to balance the enthusiasm and demands of those boys and girls whose rewards from their efforts flow easily against the desire of all boys and girls to participate. Our goal is to allow equal opportunity for all to improve and, ultimately, take advantage of the opportunity the game provides to enjoy themselves. It is the "around the breakfast table" type discussions in each of your homes that answer whether we, as a club, have delivered this ultimate goal. We sincerely hope we have.

Some of the efforts the Club made during the season to deliver on this have been to:  reinforce with our coaches the Club Mantra of equal opportunity for all  insist upon independence and transparency in all premier and representative team selections;  reinvigorate the representative program;  refine and improve our coaching program;  dedicate ourselves to getting the basics right on the field during the Saturday morning and Friday evening games.

Please be assured that the enjoyment had by all our boys and girls remains the Club's paramount wish.

Facilities We are spoilt to have the benefit of the Terry Jarvis Centre (indoor facility). Amongst other things it allows us to extend the opportunity for our cricketers to develop during the windy and wet offseason. We take advantage of this by running comprehensive winter programs and holiday programs. These again were well supported this season. Feedback was that they were rewarding for the participants and run smoothly.

Of course the primary outcome on the facilities front was the re-opening of the new carpet like surface at Shore Road and construction of the new outdoor nets (now 7 in total; 2 more than previously) at the far end of the Shore Road fields. These are a wonderful addition to the Club's facilities and we have been delighted with these developments. These having been completed, the facilities committee (led by Greg Olliver and Mark Smith) have developed and submitted plans to Council for a new pavilion. Should it go ahead (and the club is aspiring to achieve that), the pavilion will transition our home ground into one of the premier and most desirable club sports grounds in Auckland, if not New Zealand.

Meanwhile, plans for new outdoor nets, a re-vamp of Bloodworth Park and development of the far field opposite Portland Road (fondly known as the Haggitt Oval in recognition of all the efforts of Bryan Haggitt) continue unabated. Your Committee and Board have been active!

Some Statistics Player numbers were up on last season. With approximately 630 junior and 120 senior players we are a large club. Representative fixtures were hugely successful. A summary of results follows:  versus Grafton, November 2015, won 6 lost 2.  Versus University, December 2015, won 8, lost 2.  Versus Howick/Pakuranga, February 2016, won 8, lost 2  Versus Cornwall, March 2016, won 3 (including both grade 7 teams), lost 5.

Girls Cricket Resurgence in girls’ cricket at Parnell continued this season, again led by the indefatigable Dominic Drumm. The Club, under Dominic's auspices, is working to a 3-5 year plan to broaden the base of girls playing at Parnell Cricket Club and with a view to a Premier Women's team in the foreseeable future. To this end, we have been approaching schools in our catchment area, seeking to encourage girls’ participation and to develop them through coaching. This remains a key objective for the Club.

Boys Cricket The Grade 9 and 10 team under the wise and dedicated coaching of Adam Mercer had good success with one boy, Christian Smyth, excelling by scoring two (!) centuries during the season. Entry of a team in this grade maintains a pathway for boys to remain with the Club on leaving intermediate school and is a stepping stone to the Senior Club. For these reasons, we do see a team in this grade as important and were delighted with its success.

19. In Grade 8, we again fielded two premier teams, one finishing third. In addition, we fielded 2 grade A teams. This is a highly competitive grade, often interrupted by demands on the boys' end of intermediate/preparatory school era. Our success in it was most pleasing.

In Grade 7 we again fielded 3 premier teams (and 2 grade A teams). The Committee made the decision to give as many boys as possible the opportunity to develop their cricket (hence the push for a third premier team) whilst striving not to dissipate strength of the top premier teams. Accordingly, the Club fielded two equal strength teams (one coached by Craig Presland which went on to win the overall championship) and a third (best of the rest) team.

Numbers in the remaining grades were strong and feedback was broadly positive.

Playing Format Commencement of our season is deliberately delayed until the weekend after Labour Weekend. It stops of course to allow sun and sand to become the focus for 6 weeks or so over Christmas, is then stalled further by Anniversary Day and again by Waitangi Day holidays. The season is ultimately curtailed by the Easter break. This season, with Easter falling so early and with a consequentially reduced season, the decision was made to play games over the Waitangi weekend. This was not universally popular. It was, however, a compromise and a result of an early Easter. The format of the games itself remain unchanged. This is notwithstanding some demand for shorter (20/20) games in some grades and a push for grading in Grade 5 (first year hard ball cricket). Perhaps changes in these respects lie ahead in future seasons. In the meantime, Cricket Blitz (at secondary school level), with its focus on a shorter version of the game, is growing in its popularity.

Disciplinary Processes Though recourse to it will hopefully be slight, the Club has implemented a disciplinary process for moments of over exuberance. Please refer to the website for detail.

The Website Completely revamped, refreshed and modernised. We, the Club, spent a great deal of time adapting this to best suit us and are delighted with the end product. Feedback and areas for improvement are welcomed.

EDCA Many thanks to James Dudson and Murray Davis for their exemplary and dedicated contributions here. Details of our participation and success in the EDCA tournaments and programs are covered elsewhere so are not repeated here.

Notable Achievements As mentioned earlier, twin centuries during the season for Christian Smyth. This was a remarkable achievement. Other makers were Samson Chandulal (114 off 51 balls) and Flynn Dudson, (100* off 64 balls). Hat tricks to Hetali Patel and Luca Mercer. Five wicket bags for Emma Williamson, Ben Graham, Riley Turner, Louie Chandulal, Seb MacDonald, Max Dudson and Harry Fitzpatrick. Nathan Robinson won the top year 8 EDCA district tournament batsman. The special Club awards went to Alex Paulsen (Buxton Trophy for best and fairest), Max Dudson (Bloodworth Trophy most outstanding cricketer, Grade 8), Ede Rogan (Irene Bradley Memorial Rosebowl, woman showing most promise, fair play and club spirit). Congratulations to all.

Overseas Visiting Team In January we were delighted to host a representative under 17 team from Trinidad. The boys played a 50 over a side match down at Orakei Domain. With Flynn McGregor-Sumpter anchoring our innings with 97 and the sun shining, it was a great success.

Acknowledgments The club is enormously grateful to its wide volunteer group, tirelessly and selflessly fuelling the engine to our . With me on the committee have been Tom Bassett, Murray Davis, Dominic Drumm, James Dudson, Valerie Von Geldern, Greg James, Phil Lindberg, Rick Osborne and Jon Tierney.

The Club is indebted to each of you; your assistance to me on the committee has been greatly appreciated. Likewise, the grade coordinators perform a massive role and do it so well. This season they were: Grade 1: Catherine Flippard Grade 2: Suzanne Wood Grade 3: Jeremy Boucher Grade 4: Jacqui Sinclair Grade 5: Nicky Hall Grade 6: Kate Wilson Grade 7: Andrew Bell Grade 8: Michele Sang Grade 9/10: Adam Mercer It is the Grade Coordinators who are predominantly the face of the Club. Their role extends right through the season, involving constant updates, organisation and information sharing with our members. They do a magnificent job, thank you to all. Lastly, special mention also to our Rep Coaches and Junior Pro Coaches: Rep Coaches - Craig Presland, Mark Wilson, Greg James, Shankar, Tony Burt, Geoff Morgan, Jon Ormond, Grayson Aspinall and Rob Woodley. Junior Pro Coaches – Ian Trott, Simon Herbst, Jonathan McInroy, Joe Kinghorn-Gray and Peter Hickman.

Again, my thanks to you all. For my part, it was a tremendously satisfying end to an era of rep coaching to coerce my 7B team to a win against Cornwall in the final fixture of the season, whilst Craig Presland's 7A team, on the neighbouring pitch, at Shore Road, also beat Cornwall.

May next season see all our boys and girls continue to enjoy this beautiful game and thrive in the sun.

Yours truly

We look forward to the next season’s contests knowing that all our opponents will be keen to win the Peter Badley Shield. We will need to be on top of our games.”

THE PETER BADLEY SHIELD

The Peter Badley Shield and Peter – when he was winning captain of the Parnell “Reds” 1956/57 & 1957/58

Who was Peter Badley – the name on the Shield? Peter, for ten years from the mid 1950s to mid’60s, selected and coached the EDCA Under 14 teams which won the ACA U14 Tournament in 9 of those 10 years. A truly incredible record – due to Peter’s amazing knowledge of the game and ability to coach. He brooked no parental interference – most years he was sole selector, the ultimate benevolent dictator. Peter joined Parnell in 1944 on leaving New Plymouth Boys High. A batsman who could ‘keep, Peter played in those halcyon days of the Club under Merv Wallace, and Bert Sutcliffe, but it is as an administrator that he is best remembered. For Parnell he was first Hon Secretary, then Club Captain and had two terms as President. Secretary/Treasurer of Auckland Cricket from 1966 to the mid ‘70s - just he and his wife, Irene, ran the office. Then Peter became the ACA historian and archivist but, always, he kept Junior cricket in mind by organising frequent reunions of players from past District Age Group Tournaments. These notes hardly do justice to the work that Peter did for Parnell, EDCA and Auckland Cricket. Elected a Life Member and, later, Patron of Auckland Cricket Association, Peter, when he died, left substantial legacies to both EDCA and Parnell CC. The latter legacy endures by way of the PA Badley Parnell CC Memorial Trust. EDCA loaned $60k for the building of the Terry Jarvis Centre and, in return, receives annually free use of the TJC for it’s academies and the furtherance of Age Group cricket. Peter wouldn’t have wished for more!

Callum also had a good season with the bat, both for the College and for EDCA Years 12/13s. At Sacred Heart, Jack Coman shows great promise with the bat and as a medium pacer. Jack and Will St John were included in the 3rd intake to Auckland Cricket’s “Developing Future Aces Squad”. Hamish McLean, ex King’s, had already been added to that Squad in the 2nd intake, late 2015.

MARTIN CROWE, 1962 – 2016, R.I.P.

The tragic death of at such a young age was marked by a minute’s silence at grounds throughout New Zealand - from the youngest club grades to Premier. It coincided with our Sunday Field Day – PCC vs. Cornwall, Martin’s club. Below, our Grade 5s, along with the Cornwall side, gathered at Saint Kentigern School. Further down Shore Road were th Grade 7 teams and, the previous day, by the same pitch, our Premier team and their opposition also marked Martin’s passing.

36. ADAPTIVE CRICKET DAY

Once again, Parnell CC, along with the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation Cricket, Sommerville Special School and the Pegasus Unit of Pakuranga College, ran an Adaptive Cricket Day.Unfortunately the NZ Blind Cricket Association was unable to fit this into their calendar but, perhaps, they will be back next year.

Joe Kinghorn-Gray, the 22 year old coach out from Edinburgh, ran the Day. Joe was helped by an ACA coach, plus Peter Hickman, James Nuttall and some 20 Saint Kentigern School Year 8 pupils.

Approximately 80 special needs youngsters attended and enjoyed an introduction to cricket at the various skill stations Many of the St Kentigern lads are Parnell players and their skilful assistance at the field stations was very much appreciated. This was the first time most of the Sommerville and Pegasus students had been able to take part in any form of the game and Joe and his team were very helpful and encouraging when teaching the very basics of batting, bowling and fielding. A sausage sizzle added to the Day

The Club is very grateful to Duncan Grant of Saint Kentigern and his lads for making this such a memorable day. And, finally, huge thanks to Joe, Peter and James for giving their time and expertise gratis.

NOTABLE VISITORS TO THE TJC & SHORE ROAD RESERVE

Ross Taylor being interviewedby Adam Gilchrist of Sky TV Ross with Olivia Rae Olivia, Scotland Women’s opening bat and a Level 3 coach, was in NZ visiting her mother (working for Auckland University). Olivia played part of the season for Takapuns Premier Women and, when they had a bye, a game for Parnell Men’s “Thirds”.

Scott Styris, also being interviewed for TV As were Tim McIntosh, Ian Trott & Bryan Haggitt for the “Cricket Show” .

Gareth Hopkins, Tarun Nethula & protogees Kane Williamson and admirers Gareth Hopkins, former Black Cap and Aces’ Captain, for charity, gave an intensive couple of hours coaching youngsters Sadly, most of the youngsters dispersed before the cameras came out, as did Aidan Hobson, a Parnell Premier player of the 1990s who assisted during the first hour. Tarun, of the Aces, then helped Gareth during the second session.

Kane Williamson was interviewed at the TJC in May. Word of his coming spread like wildfire and several lucky lads escaped from school to meet him, to gain a few tips and to be part of the photo opportunity. Your Editor’s grateful thanks to Rod Smith, Greg James, Simon Herst and others who helped make Kane’s visit possible. 38. COACHING & the TERRY JARVIS CENTRE

The value of the TJC to Parnell, and the standard coaching that we are now able to provide, is hard to express in words. But to just look around at the swarms of youngsters, from the age of 5 onwards, who display batting techniques and bowling actions comparable to the stars, does the heart tremendous good. The TJC is a truly marvellous facility but it is the coaching team that really adds to cherry to the icing on the cake. I can think of no other club that can offer coaching from no fewer than three Level 3 coaches, a former Black Cap and a very experienced Level 2 . Ian Trott will return for his 10th season at Parnell. His immense experience has been vital to the Club and, under him our Premiers have performed consistently at the very highest level. Ian’s desire is, also, to tap latent talent and develop future Premier players. Tim McIntosh, the scorer of 2 Test 100s and the holder of all time Parnell and Auckland batting records, is a tremendous mentor to his Premier teammates and is developing his coaching skills. Jonathan McInroy continues to coach with unlimited enthusiasm. Anyone watching his group sessions in the TJC will be impressed by the energy that he generates and his professional skills. He has had particular success with the EDCA U15 Girls – winners in 2013/14 and 2014/15. Roy Goodyear is now available to coach at the Club. Hugely experienced, his coaching took King’s College to more Gillette Cup honours than any other local school. Now coaching at Auckland Grammar, it is hoped that he will conduct coaching of coaches – courses offering to qualify parents and older students for Level 1. Roy is also an umpire and umpiring courses are also in the pipeline – parents and teenagers alike will enjoy these opportunities! Simon Herbst, a highly skilled and experienced coach and a bowling specialist. Simon co-ordinates the Junior coaching schedule that supports our 100+ volunteer parent manager/coaches. Simon aspires to gain Level 3 certification and we support him fully in his aim.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

PREMIER GRADE Captain: David Goddard Coach: Ian Trott

Team – winner of: Allan Thompson Memorial Trophy – Runer-up in the Major Two Day Championship, Plate winnerChampionship Auckland Cricket’s Spirit of Cricket Award Tim McIntosh: Awarded the Laurie Schnauer Trophy – Players’ Player of the season and Auckland Cricket Trophy – most Premier runs: 1264 Ben Horne - winner of: The SR Speed Trophy – most Premier wicketkeeping dismissals: 55

Back row: George Harper jnr, Ben Rainger Mike Ravlic, Tom Talbot Middle row: Sam Varcoe, Ian Trott (Coach), Tom Urry Front row: Tom Hills, Tim McIntosh, David Goddard (Captain), Ben Horne, Jesse Simpson, Billy Sanger Absent: Mark Chapman, Ganesh Ratnasabapathy, Henry King, Charles Bevin, Jocelyn Goodger (Scorer)

Defence of the Hedley Howarth Trophy was the prime objective. Sadly, Takapuna outplayed us in the final game – just for once our top batsmen all failed. Until then Tim McIntosh had pulled us through every tight situation - Tim was a colossus, his 1254 runs shattered the old Club record and, week after week, our innings were built around him. To be chosen for the second year in succession the ‘Player’s Player of the Year’, with the Laurie Schnauer Trophy, was fitting recognition of the respect and standing that Tim holds amongst his cricketing peers. Ben Horne lived up to his reputation as a most promising bat and, whilst not scoring quite as prolifically as hoped, his influence on the Team was enormous with his outstanding ‘keeping and marvellously positive attitude on and off the field. Ben’s 55 dismissals earned him the ACA award of the SR Speed Trophy. Ben also captained, and hit a ton, for Auckland A. Jesse Simpson, a newcomer from Otago, proved an invaluable recruit. Jesse’s batting was always forthright and he fitted into the ethos of the Team like a glove. Several time he batted us out of strife and his efforts earned Jesse selection for Auckland A. His presence made up somewhat for the absences of Mark Chapman, called away to represent Hong Kong and, later, the Aces. Mark’s presence was necessarily intermittent and possibly affected his form for us. George Harper jnr chipped in with several significant innings and his absences, late in the season due to work for NZ Golf, destabilised our batting somewhat. George’s T20 ton against Ellerslie was stunning and he has much to offer.

Neither Tom Talbot nor Sam Varcoe scored the runs expected of them but, hopefully, form will return to them in 2016/17. And Ben Rainger, too – runs eluded him but Ben will have learned a great deal from his stint with the Prems. The Skipper didn’t have his greatest season but Dave did turn in a couple of gritty knocks late in the season. And when it came to tail end rescues, Henry King, Ganesh and Will St John all had their moments – and so too did Mike Ravlic. Our attack - early season worries were soon dispelled and our bowling was, really, our strength. Fears that the absences of James Walsh (overseas on OE) and Lockie Ferguson (with the Aces) would leave our attack very thin – they had taken 50 wickets between them in 2014/15. – quickly vanished. Mike Ravlic continued, as always, to provide the backbone and Ganesh Ratnasabapathy stepped up a sizable notch. Ganesh had gained an extra yard of pace and our bowling never lacked for hostility. Ganesh also got a deserved run for Auckland A. Likewise, Tom Hills was infinitely more effective this season - 27 wickets at 17.59 as against just 6 at 48.00 in 2014/15. Tom always turned in an honest day’s work. Henry King returned mid November from Victoria University and Karori CC – his pace and bounce was a huge bonus and Henry shows great promise for future seasons. When Henry returned south in February, Billy Sanger came up from the Reserves and grabbed his opportunity with both hands – bowling at brisk pace, Billy was very effective. Another to make his Premier debut was Will St John – and what a debut it was! Versus Takapuna, he came in at 88/9 – batted through till stumps and then, on the second day, continued to hold the fort and his 25 saved the innings. Then, coming on as third change, his 4/17 with his medium pacers completely turned the game our way. School holidays ended and Will returned to King’s College to skipper their 1st XI for 2016. The spinners – Dave Goddard led the way with his offies, just as he had in 2014/15. So often he made break throughs just as the quicks were faltering and the cleaning up of tails was his specialty. Mark Chappy, Tim and Jesse chipped in from time to time but it was Dave who was much the most effective. Fielding – another major strength with our slip/gully cordon very safe and efficient. Ben Horne, behindthestumps, and Tim at 1st slip were totally magnificent but George and Dave were superb as well. The catching figures say it all – Ben Horne 47, Tim 22, Dave 18 and George 11. Chappy and Ben Rainger excelled in the gully. In the outfield Tom Talbot saved countless runs and he and Tom Hills took some amazing catches. There were no weak links – youngsters stepping in at short notice excelled, too, for instance Charles Bevin was lively in the field and, deputising behind the sticks, secured a stumping. Summing up, under Dave Goddard’s astute leadership and Ian Trott’s guidance, the Team had a superb season. Our Prems were a very happy unit, despite being unable to defend the Hedley Howarth Trophy. One of the top two teams for three successive seasons says it all. They overcame the difficulties of having Orakei Domain as a temporary Home Ground and the uncertainties of playing on a new block when back at Shore Road. Tim and Ben had record seasons and Rav continued to excel. Our pace attack rose to the occasion, youngsters, nurtured through their junior years, came to the fore, performed admirably and show great promise. Finally, overwhelming thanks to Jocelyn Goodger, our scorer for the past 19 seasons. Jocelyn had to overcome the vagaries of Results Vault and the rather makeshift facilities at Orakei and still kept the score book impeccably. Also, very grateful thanks to Dave Keane, our Groundsman, who also had to work under difficulties at Orakei and then, right on Christmas, have handed to him the newly laid Shore Road block with the expectation that Premier grade games be played there in less than a month. Dave performed the miracle and his new pitch turned up trumps – just a bit in for the bowlers but also heaps of runs. The Coach – Ian Trott , in his 9th season with the Club, put heart and soul into the Team. Not easy with limited practice facilities for the first half of the season and with Auckland’s climate necessitating a juggle between indoor and outdoor training. The need to book the TJC, the very high turnout of players clamouring for selection – Prems, Reserves, Thirds, One Day Prems. Not easy but Ian was particularly pleased to see lads, who he had first coached at Grade 5, first year of hard ball, coming through to perform with distinction at Premier level Finally, Amanda Goddard’s “Lunch Team” excelled itself as always – Parnell lunches were renowned by opposing players and umpires. And the weekly supply of Janine Ravlic’s “Mrs Higgin’s Cookies” was always hugely appreciated. Not easy catering at Orakei, no kitchen, in fact no facilities at all – but difficulties were overcome with smiles and good humour. Roll on 2016/17 and the re-capturing of the Hedley Howarth Trophy and the Jeff Crowe Cup.

Jesse in full flow Tom Hills & Ganesh – all hostility Tweak from the Skipper

45. PREMIER RESERVES Captain: Simon Wood Coach: Simon Herbst

The main focus for the Premier Reserves side in the 2015/16 season was to win promotion into the Major section of Premier Reserve grade. This would require consistent performances across both competition formats for the duration of the season. At the half way point in the season the side was well on track, sitting undefeated in both the One Day and Two Day competitions, with several players making notable contributions along the way. Centuries to Sam Varcoe and Justin Rosenberg vs Birkenhead and Eden Roskill respectively both set up One Day wins. Rudi Bischoff, Stu Wood and Ben Rainger all collected hauls of 5 or more wickets to contribute to the good pre-Christmas momentum that was building. Unfortunately the team stalled in the early weeks of January, missing out on valuable points against a under strength Ellerslie as a result of a poorly covered wicket and losing 2 key games to Kumeu and University in the One Dayers. Poor performances against Grafton and Birkenhead in the two day section left the side with too much work to do in the last month of the competition and put the side out of contention for promotion. Stand out performances in the second half of the season included another 5 wicket bag for both Bischoff and Stu Wood. They were joined by Razin Bharde, who took his first ‘5 for’ for the Club in a losing effort against University. It is also worth noting that Stuart Wood finished the season on 42 wickets at an average of 15.27, the highest wicket taker in both sections of Prem Reserve grade. This also included a spell of 35 overs on the trot vs Birkenhead. An impressive feat for a top order batsman. The batting was what let the team down in the second half of the season and one individual performance stands alone as noteworthy. Having pulled his hamstring in the fielding innings, Chey Barnes delivered performance the demonstrated the toughness and determination that only experience brings. With the side in trouble Barnes batted out the final session of the day to see Parnell in a position of strength by the end of the day. He picked up where he left off, on the morning of Day 2, to grind his way to much deserved triple figures. Justin Rosenberg was the top run scorer for the season, compiling 463 runs at an average of 42.09. Rosenberg came within touching distance of more hundreds during the back half of the year but unfortunately fell agonisingly short on 2 occasions. Justin will be sorely missed in the 2016/17 season as he departs our shores in search of new experiences overseas. It is surprising how big the shoes are left behind to fill, by such a little man. We also see the departure of Chey Barnes and Rudi Bischoff, both have declared 2015/16 to be their last season of cricket. I am sure we will continue to see them around the Club and hold on to the hope of a comeback of some description as both players will be hard to replace. Blue Hamel held the no. 5 batting spot but things didn’t go his way until he hit a cracking 57* in a run chase – hopefully 2016/17 will see his promise fulfilled. Too many only made limited appearances – Sam Fastier hit two 47s in the only game he played. Taranaki’s side had first call on Sam and he had an outstanding season for them. Another Taranaki man, Billy Sanger added considerable bite to the attack before he was elevated to the Prems where he performed admirably. Sam Varcoe was allowed to turn out for us early on – his 156* was decidedly useful but that was his only knock before being recalled to the Prems. Ben Rainger’s offies (6/13) devastated Eden Roskill in December before he, too, was nabbed by the selectors. Premier calls have been a bug bear for the Reserves since time immemorial but that is the rod that a Reserve team has to bear! Others only put in intermittent appearances - sadly we saw little of James Mulvey in the New Year – his batting had real promise. And Joe Kinghorn-Gray, our top wicket taker in 2014/15 (33 @ 20) came into the side very late and certainly proved his worth by capturing 13 wickets at next to nothing. The Team will look to take the disappointments of this season and use it as motivation moving forward into the 2016/17, where the goal again will be to win promotion into the major section of the Reserve Grade competition.

Simon Wood - Captain

[Editor’s Note: Simon makes no mention of his own batting – much of the Team’s batting woes were due to a rather cavalier attitude that, too often, failed. Simon was one of the few who was prepared to put his head down, bat time and build an innings. And co-skipper Ryan, hopefully, new specs will enable him to regain the form in 2016/17 that we know he is capable of.]

What were the ‘batsmen’ doing? 47. ‘THIRDS’ – TWO DAY 2B GRADE Captain: Peter Hickman Manager: Richard Humphries

After spending two seasons in the B2 grade, the 3rds decided that this season was the season that we challenged for promotion, requiring the team to finish in one of the top 2 positions. We managed to finish 1st in the one-day competition, and 3rd in the two-day competition, leading to a 2nd overall finish, and a promotion spot sealed. During pre-season, we realised that this season we would have one of the deepest and strongest squads available. During the first half of the season, the team went undefeated in both one and two dayers. During the second half however, player unavailability’s played their part; losing first innings in two 2 dayers left us in a situation where the final one dayer would decide the final placing. Even though we lost the final game, we secured enough bonus points to sneak into 2nd place overall. This season differed from the previous two as we had a solid core of players that played for the entirety of the season. Current players such as myself, Josh Milne, Matthew Vercoe-Curtis, Kelly Lunow-Haldane, Elliot Jaffe and Elliot Humphries combined with a new set of players; Ettienne Van Vuuren, Thomas Landrigan, Mike Gedye and Gavin Poole, came together to form a fantastic unit. Thanks also must be extended to players that may not have played the whole season, but all made contributions in the games played - Ben Gresson, Hamish McLean, Sam Wilson, Simon Walker, Luke O’Toole, Ryan Bergman, Ben Aveyard and Ayaan Lufti. Thank you to all. It was pleasing to see this season that many players over the course of the season had opportunities in the Premier Reserves. Congratulations to Matthew Vercoe-Curtis, Gavin Poole, Josh Milne and Kelly Lunow-Haldane. Also congratulations to Mohan Wali, a 3rds bowler for 2 seasons, he earned himself a place in the Reserves team for the majority of the season. Individually, Matthew Vercoe-Curtis was the team’s most consistent batsman, averaging 40 before Christmas, dropping slightly post-Christmas, but without a doubt our best batsman this season. He had our top score of the season, a 97 against North Shore. He was well supported by his opening partner Tom Landrigan, who added invaluable experience, both with the bat and assisting me with field placements. In the unlikely event that top order failed, the middle order, consisting of Josh Milne, Ettienne Van Vuuren and Kelly Lunow-Haldane, provided the stability for the rest of the innings. A host of bowlers made their marks during the season, Gavin Poole took a fantastic 32 wickets this season, the highest wicket taker in the grade. Mike Gedye looked dangerous every time he had ball in hand, locking down the opening bowling spot. I had a successful season, taking 22 wickets over the season, either opening the bowling or first change. Elliot Humphries once again spun many batsmen into giving up their wickets, taking 17 wickets in total. Elliot Jaffe was ever present, taking 14 wickets this season and earning the reputation of the fastest bowler in the grade. Special thanks must go to Ian Trott and Simon Herbst, who were ever present for advice. Towards the end of the season Simon also took up the role of 3rds coach, which was incredibly valuable to myself and the rest of the players. This season Richard Humphries became the team manager. A massive thanks to him; his work in the organisation and management of the team was invaluable. Thanks also to everyone that came to support the team, in particular Sean Milne, who didn’t miss a single Saturday. Overall, a very successful season, the goal of promotion being achieved represents that.

Other Parnell Senior results – disappointingly, not all teams have filed reports or full team averages. However, thanks to those that have reported and, for the record, the following is how the remainder of our teams fared. One very pleasing aspect was the turnout at the Senior Prizegiving and here are more photos from that occasion:

Chak - Captain

51. PRESIDENTS’ GRADE Captain: Greg Olliver Following the relative successes of the previous season Pressies had a sustained and intensive pre-season and held high expectations of a highly successful season. Alas this was not to be.

Whereas in the previous season the team only lost one game in the first round and lead the grade at that point this year the team got off to a poor start winning only 3 of our 10 round robin games with another 3 washed out.

Newbies to the team this year were Dominic Drumm, Gavin Lloyd, Keith Monterio and, during the season, Mark Murphy while some returned to the fold such as Simon Payton and Dave Ruck. Ross Muirhead was given a sabbatical for the season.

We started off with losses to Howick Pakuranga and then Ellerslie when we were 105/2 with 10 over to go chasing 147 and ended up 135/8.

We got a good hiding from Takapuna before having two games against the two bottom teams washed out.

It was round 6 before we finally notched up a win over University Society after the skipper arrived late, promoted himself up the order above Sasha who was already padded up and hit a ton to set them 224 which they fell 14 runs short.

Our innings was not without controversy when the skipper refused an easy one off the hip to backward square which upset Sasha, who was at the other end and then sat on his bat until the skipper was gone. He was overheard at the Jimmy Barnes concert the following evening, in Hong Kong 4 months later and only last week in an Auckland pub still going on about it.

We had the bye the round before Christmas so we went into the holiday break with one win under our belt and as many points from washed out games as wins.

We came off the 4 week break fighting fit, a lot heavier, and beat Suburbs New Lynn. Under hot condition Chris Turner and Darren Davies put on XXX for the first wicket and we left Suburbs 245 to get to which they replied to with 211.

History was made the following week when we snuck a win by 5 runs over North Shore with the bowlers bowling superbly. We were lucky to play this game on the number one wicket at the Devonport Domain.

Further history came about as a result of the debut of Mark Murphy coinciding with Nigel Scott’s only game for the season. . When considered with the balance of the side this was the heaviest Parnell team ever to hit the field in its 159 year history. Not many singles were taken and Nige top scored and took a couple of catches. Great bowling particularly from Robbo and Little G got us the win.

The game against North Shore was most notable as Roger Harvey’s last game for the club after moving to Mt Maunganui. Roger’s length of service to PCC both on and off the field and the stat’s that go with it are remarkable in itself however for those of us that came to know him towards the end of his playing days the most inspiring thing about Roger is the athleticism he still possesses and brings to the game especially when in the field where he still has that prowling look to him.

Rained intervened again the following week and we were washed out against Eden Roskill.

Somehow the other results went our way and we scraped into the top 6 for the second round.

We hit the championship round thinking we were hitting our straps and ready to pull off a great comeback from behind and achampionship victory. However those great plans came immediately unstuck when we lost to Eden Roskill where the catch of the season was taken by one of the larger members of the team and was immediately followed by an earthquake in . The worst part of this result was that we lost Robbo for the rest of the season after bowling exceptionally well since coming back from injury.

This was followed by another defeat by Grafton at the world’s worst cricket ground, Victoria Park. Two highlights from this game was Simmo being hit onto and over the motorway flyover and Rod Smith’s entourage which included his mother, wife and three daughters with two of the later attending to him on the field of play……….

Yet another wash out against Takapuna and then we finally had a win against Howick Pakuranga where after years of trying Turns hit a hundred against his old club and was well supported by Barks making a cameo appearance.

The following week saw us playing Ellerslie. This was a close game but they got the 219 they needed in the end. Following his first hundred the week before Turns, turns up late, puts on the pads and hit another one!

The end result is that we played Ellerslie again the following week for 5th and 6th and after a bad day at the office finished 6th.

On reflection we just did not score enough runs, the bulk of which were scored by Darren Davies and Chris Turner, despite both only playing half of the games. The bowling was headed as usual by Greg James, Marc O’Gorman and Mark Robinson despite Robbo’s injuries and shortage of appearences.

Ironically the fielding this season was better than usual with the majority of catches, with a number of particularly fine efforts, being taken rather than dropped.

Over Easter the team strengthened with a few contract players including Trotty, Bluey and his dad Mike, headed to Hong Kong to play two games against the Hong Kong CC.

52. Hong Kong James AKA “Little G” or “Baby G” was this trips advance party heading up early in the week supposedly to do some work………. Most guys arrived in on the Thursday and made a good impression at HKCC’s upstairs bar that night which is very English pub like. This was a very cunning play by the locals who kept us there well into the small hours of the night (morning? Ed.) before our first game the following day.

We played a bit like it the next day against their Taverners side which is a semi social team for those competent cricketers who can play on a Friday afternoon. After a delayed start for weather they batted first. Haggo opened the bowling. They got enough and we didn’t.

After the game we had another night which included dinner back in the upstairs bar………

The following day the team spread out over Hong Kong. A core group headed over to Macau for the day and managed to avoid the casinos.

Some of us even managed a fine dining experience that night while some tried to but their attire, shorts and jandals, let them down.

On the Sunday we played a full strength HKCC team. We were strengthened by the arrival of Trotty straight off the plane from the Prem’s last game and he looked like he had been playing all season although as the new boy in the team had to start at the bottom and work his way up the pecking order so batted 8.

Again they batted first and got plenty. We started slowly and despite some heroics from Mike and Trotty we struggled most of the way and fell short. Immediately after the game we enjoyed a fines session with our hosts on the ground before another quick visit to the upstairs bar before settling in for the formal dinner. It cannot be overstated that HKCC know how to host!

After another great night most made their way back to the hotel late afterwards and then onwards home the next day except for Haggo who when he booked his ticket accidently made his return flight for the following Wednesday but ultimately he did manage to change it and leave a day or two after everyone else!

We are always on the lookout for new recruits so anyone who feels like putting the pads on again can find us on the last Wednesday of each month pre season and each Wednesday during the season practicing both in the nets and the bar.

Ollie - Skipper (aka Tsar or, as overheard, Buddha – Ed.)

Hostility personified – no lightweights in this attack!

Backed by tigerish fielding and stylish batting, our Pressies finished 6th (of 6) in the Championship

But one success - the venerable Simmo, handed the ball and using all his adverserial verbal skills, got a decision in his favour to capture his only wicket for the season. This advanced his career tally to 838, only 64 behind Ross Morgan’s 902 – 2016/17 beckons! 53.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Your Editor, Bryan Haggitt, wishes to express his very grateful thanks to the many people who helped in one way or another in producing this booklet. Particular thanks to  Mia Ricketts for taking the photos at the Junior Prizegiving, 1st Session, and to all those other members, parents and friends who have supplied photos and reports  Craig Speakman, who photographed the 2nd Session of the Junior Prizegiving and the Seniors’ as well. More than that he took photos throughout the season and provided me with an outstanding collection – choosing which to include in this booklet was extremely difficult. And it is Craig that we all have to thank for the historical stats.  Phototek, North Star and other photographers for the many team photos included here. I have tried to record shots of as many youngsters as possible so that they have a personal record of the wonderful 2015-16 Season.  My wife, Jenny, for her willingness to solve my computer problems (which occur frequently) and patience in all cricketing matters!
