This has been our most successful in recent years both on and off the field. I would like to thank the board members for all their work in providing the leadership for Counties-Manukau Cricket. This season has been one of change with the board focused on governance and structures of CMCA. While this effort may not have made a noticeable difference on the cricket pitches around Counties in this season I feel we are in good shape for the 2009/10 season to start making a difference at club level cricket. Trevor Gill, as CEO has developed CMCA into a professional organization in his first full season with more structural organising to be completed this year. The major challenge for CMCA is funding and this occupies considerable time and effort by Trevor. I would like to thank New Zealand Cricket and Northern Districts Cricket for their ongoing financial support for coaching. We have increased club fees this season however we still have a heavy reliance on Gaming Trust funding to pay for cricket operations. This is not sustainable in the current environment and the board is looking for other ways of funding our cricket operations. This season saw us move into the electronic age with a active website. This was updated on a weekly basis and junior draws were computer generated. The results and points tables were also on the web and available within a couple of days of the games. Our hits on our webpage exceeded 40,000 a month in the middle of the season. Further work on this is planned in 2009/10 season to enhance it further. We had huge exposure in the local papers this year with Trevor penning several articles each week. Our data base is due to be formatted to enable us to talk to our players by email easily and help with communication to clubs and their membership. Coaching in schools (Milo programme), club support and representative support have all been increased this season and this will benefit all players and clubs for the future. On the field this has been one of our most successful seasons. 5 Page Counties Manukau Cricket Association 2008/09 Yearbook CMCA fielded players on the national stage and at Northern District level are: NZ Representative Players 2008-2009 NZ Men’s ‘A’ Team: Peter McGlashan (Weymouth) NZ U/19 Team: Jono Hickey (Manukau), Tamati Clarke (Weymouth), Shane Gadsdon (Papakura), Ashwyn Herwells (Manukau). Behind the team officials are also a group of volunteers that contribute much to the game. This often goes unnoticed but we would like to thank you all for your efforts. This group includes supporters, parents, umpires and scorers. I would like to make a special acknowledge of Peter Zanzottera to the Counties Manukau cause and recognise that our successes are largely a product of his efforts on and off the field. I would also like to make a special mention of all the club officials that put in countless hours to the game of cricket to assist players of all grades to develop and enjoy this wonderful game. 6 Thank you very much. Page Counties Manukau Cricket Association 2008/09 Yearbook To all those club players out there enjoy a Saturday of cricket, our task at CMCA is to make your Saturdays more enjoyable by providing for you what you require to improve and develop your games. This at times is a huge challenge. This year we were hopeful of achieving the Te Hihi Indoor Facility and a home for CMCA. The lack of funding from Gaming Trusts has resulted in the Indoor facility being put on hold. We have created a home for our offices and clubrooms that service both Counties and Weymouth‟s requirements at Mountfort Park. A big thanks to Manukau City Council for assisting in this project and also with the maintenance of the first class pitch at Mountfort Park. CMCA has been focused on governance and structures this year and that is largely now in place. Our focus is now to assist in developing stronger clubs, increased player base and therefore stronger club cricket in the district. The board and our staff are all looking forward the challenge of the 2009/10 season and hopefully the rewards that go with that challenge. Finally I would like to thank anyone who helped with cricket in any capacity as we would not have the game without you. Roger Wark Chairman CMCA 7 Page Counties Manukau Cricket Association 2008/09 Yearbook CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT “CRICKET AT ITS BEST” These are the four words that were chosen as an inspirational statement to drive Counties Manukau Cricket for the next four years. To achieve the distinction that the statement describes we have to show excellence and unification in everything we do - on and off the pitch. To be honest, when I came out with the four words, I had no idea how close we would come to achieving it in year one. With outstanding results in age-group and senior representative cricket and an acceptable year in terms of the business of cricket we are going to have to push very hard to keep raising the bar. Unification is the key to continuous improvement. Whilst by far the majority of the Counties Manukau cricket family have embraced the changes and enjoyed the results of change there are still a few who find the reforms too much and an even smaller number who pine for “The way we were”. Our navman is set for magnetic north and there‟s no turning back. It was a pleasure to introduce Owain Jenkins into the team at the start of September and he has added a great deal of value in terms of our development, particularly around the website, and doing things in “real-time”. Owain has fitted in well and enjoys the Kiwi lifestyle. Peter Zanzottera, who married Judy just before the season got underway, is getting closer to his long service medal. Peter continues to drive our young players and coaches to give their best and our reputation for producing quality age-group cricketers has much to do with him. We regard Fred Watts as part of our work team and we are constantly aware of the worth he adds to cricket in the region with his quality pitches and effusive support of CMCA. The superiority of our home pitches assisted the Gary Wood coached first team to their best year ever- finishing first and second respectively in the Brian Dunning Trophy and the Fergus Hickey Bowl. The Manukau City Council supported our joint request to build permanent administrative headquarters and decent player‟s facilities to be shared by CMCA and the Weymouth Cricket Club. This project was the focus my attention before Christmas and moving into our own offices on Christmas Eve was a popular present. Hayden Wark and Paddy Hartland carried us into the schools and put almost 7000 kids through the cricket skills programme during the summer.
