- 2 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Chairman’s Report This is my first report as Chairman of Manawatu Cricket and I am pleased to be able to report that during 2008/09 the Association has sustained the high level of achieved over recent years. This is of course a function of the wonderful support that the Association receives from staff, sponsors, clubs, players and the wider community. These are not easy times for sport in and I gratefully acknowledge the support that we get from our funders and sponsors. The partnerships that have developed over the years are critical to our being able to deliver the programmes and competitions that we do and with the current environment they become even more critical. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing the relationship.

To our staff Ian Sandbrook, Pods Hood and their support team, thanks once again for the substantial contribution you have made to the association. Ian has continued to grow in the Operations Manager role with the excellent support and guidance from Pods. The work that Pods does with also helps to put a context around what we seek to achieve locally and to ensure that what we are doing is well aligned with the national strategies. We continue to benefit from having one of the best staffing teams around and it is built not only on their outstanding operational and administrative skills but also their understanding and passion for the game.

At the end of last season we reviewed the structure of the competitions and made some changes with the P3 competition becoming exclusively 1 day cricket and P4 becoming a T20 competition. We also added the T20 competition at the end of season to coincide with the prizegiving weekend. These initiatives were well received and the feedback from the clubs at the end of the season was positive. Club cricket remains at the heart of what we do and we will continually review the competition makeup to try to reflect the needs of our players.

Manawatu had a very busy first class hosting season with 8 games played at Park including the Central Stags and Hinds games and the England A vs NZ A one days games. The played superbly and is a credit to Dave Fulton and his team at PNCC. The representative season impacts on the ability to play club cricket at Fitzherbert Park, but having the first class games played in the region is good for the game and a positive endorsement of our facilities and staff to deliver at this level.

On the playing front 2008/09 was a strong season for Manawatu. Our Black Caps continued to perform at a national level and we provided plenty of players to the Stags and Hinds sides as well

- 4 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + as CD A. The Manawatu women‟s team were the CD champions and the men‟s team won the Chapple Cup in an exciting final played in Nelson. All of the age group teams performed well with good representation in the CD age group sides and three players selected in the New Zealand U19 World Cup training squad.

The school development programme continues to strengthen with participation numbers growing each year. Aligning clubs with schools for extra coaching has proved to be a positive initiative and hopefully both the schools and clubs will benefit in the long term as clubs are able to form relationships with players at an earlier stage and offer them a playing option post school.

Financially the Association has had another successful year achieving a $9,121 operating surplus after depreciation, meaning in cash terms the surplus was $48,036. It has been a very deliberate strategy to re-build cash reserves when the economy has been strong as we foresee some financial constraints as sponsorship and gaming trust funding becomes more difficult to access.

Finally a big thank you to fellow Board members for your support. I have enjoyed my first year as Chairman thanks to the excellent team that we have at the Governance level.

Mark Cleaver Chairman

- 5 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Operation Manager’s Report

A very pleasing aspect of this report over the last few years has been our ability to announce a successful season across the board for Manawatu Cricket, and I‟m proud to report that the 2008/9 season has continued this tradition. The hard work over many years from board level through to all staff and volunteers involved in the association means we can take great satisfaction in being the Premier District Association in New Zealand. There have been some outstanding results across many areas of our operations this year, and while it‟s great to take stock and pat ourselves on the back for another successful year, I hope everyone involved still maintains the drive and passion to keep moving us forward. We are operating in challenging times at many levels and I believe it‟s our collective experience, foresight and passion that we must concentrate on to ensure we continue to push the boundaries and maintain our status.

Finance Manawatu Cricket has recorded another solid financial year. A cash surplus of $48,036 was recorded with a net profit after depreciation of $9,121. The operating surplus is in line with the MCA Board‟s target of consolidating the association‟s finances to allow us to effectively grow the game now and in the future.

As you can see in the financial report, the Endeavour Community Trust was by far our greatest supporter this season and we can‟t overstate the many thanks we wish to convey to its trustees. Their support has allowed the MCA to plan and implement programmes with certainty and has no doubt been the driving force behind the significant improvements in our core functions over the last 4-5 years. This is none more evident than in the development of our game at grassroots level where their support has allowed us to improve the quality and volume of support to clubs and schools and in the development of our next generation of Black Caps.

Staff The staffing make-up of the MCA was expanded this season primarily due to the increase in funding we were able to gain for our coaching and development programmes. Once again we have to thank the Endeavour Community Trust for their support and believing in our programmes to have significant community benefit. This season we were able to employ the following development staff: Scott Robson – Primary Schools Development Officer; Chad Law – Intermediate and Secondary Schools Development Officer; and Rachel Candy – Women‟s Cricket Coordinator. Both Scott and Chad were employed full-time over season and Rachel on a part-time basis. Obviously, the increase of staff at the coalface gave us the ability to really concentrate our efforts

- 6 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + and make some significant improvements to many of our development programmes. The quality of structures now in place and relationships we now have with our schools and clubs is due to the effort of our development staff. You will be able to see some of the significant contributions later on in the report but I thank them for their hard work and support over the summer.

During the winter of 2008 the Association began contracting the services of former Executive Officer Pods Hood to assist myself in the many operational aspects of the association. Pods knowledge and expertise in all aspects of the association has been invaluable once again this season. I believe this relationship is the undoubted strength of the MCA and allows us to continue to perform at the highest level and be a leader on the national scene. Personally, I would like to thank Pods for all his assistance over the years.

Thank you to also to Andrew Wylie, Scott Baldwin and Luke Murray for their role as the leadership group in the Men‟s representative team. With Gary Cunningham stepping down as coach, and with myself taking on the extra responsibility of coach, I cannot thank you enough for the input you had with the team this season. It is a model that is very effective when you have the right personnel involved, and I believe we managed to find that right balance which was reflected in some pleasing results. Special thanks to Andrew for his role as and his input to Manawatu Cricket over a number of years. His retirement from the rep team will be a loss to the team that will be hard to replace.

Thank you also to Peter Thompson who coached the Manawatu Women‟s team this summer. His work in conjunction with Rachel Candy, Sarah Norman and Cindy Forsyth was outstanding, and the fact the team went through the season unbeaten and finished as CD Champions is testament to the great work done in women‟s cricket this year. I‟m sure if we can retain these quality people we will continue our momentum in women‟s cricket.

Finally to all the summer squad coaches, junior rep coaches, managers, parents, grandparents and volunteers thank you for your contribution to the game in the Manawatu. We simply can‟t function effectively without your commitment and we are grateful to have such great people in the Manawatu.

Sponsors and Supporters A real strength of Manawatu Cricket is the continued support from the local business community. The support of our sponsors is crucial to the development of cricket in the region and we have been very fortunate to have a number of loyal businesses investing in this great game. A list of

- 7 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + these sponsors is published in this report so please take some time to check this out and do your sport and local businesses a favour and use these business sponsors wherever possible.

The 10th JVL Prestige Realty Annual Dinner was once again a financial and public relations success. We are hugely grateful to the extremely loyal support from a large number of local businesses in what are very difficult times. The fact we had over 320 people attend the dinner reflects what a superb event the annual dinner is – again thank you for your support. This year‟s keynote speaker was the legendary Kerry O‟Keeffe, who was back by popular demand for the significant „10th Dinner‟ after speaking at the 6th Annual Dinner way back in 2005! We were also honoured to have former New Zealand player and current NZC Board member Stephen Boock as MC.

As I alluded to earlier the 10th Annual Dinner is somewhat of a milestone for the association. For a fundraising event to reach 10 continuous years, and grow from a function with 14 tables to the current function with 44 tables says something about the success and quality of the event. Therefore, I cannot talk about the Annual Dinner without thanking Gerard Gillespie and Don Forgie for their organization. This event has been their „baby‟ from day one and the immense contribution it makes to the association each year is phenomenal. They said that the 10th would be their last and I think we can let them off after 10 years of solid service! However, I know that the Dinner will continue to be a success as we pick up the reigns because all the ground work has been done for us. Don and Gerard you have left a legacy at the association and thank you for your amazing contribution to Manawatu Cricket.

Many thanks must also go to the many volunteers who ensure cricket in the region is well organised and runs smoothly. A special thank you to Phil Gosling for his role as Match Manager at our representative fixtures. I would also like to acknowledge the support of our local media who give us excellent coverage throughout the year. The MCA also thank the Palmerston North City Council for their support and investment in cricket. On that note, I would like to congratulate Dave Fulton, and the Ground staff, for the superb job they have done on the grounds this season, particularly in maintaining Fitzherbert Park. Fitzherbert Park continues to develop into a quality venue and we can take great pride in it being named the best women‟s wicket and ground in the country, and in gaining two New Zealand „A‟ fixtures this season, which is a ringing endorsement of the quality of the venue.

Development Report As mentioned earlier the 2008/09 season has seen some great progress in our development programme. We are committed to achieving our goal of having the best district development

- 8 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + programme in New Zealand and we continue to meet our targets for our many initiatives. The development programme is the foundation of all we do at Manawatu Cricket and the following is a summary of the many initiatives happening in the Manawatu.

MILO Have-a-Go and MILO Kiwi Cricket Programmes This year was another successful one for the extremely popular MILO Have-a-Go Programme for 6-8 year olds. The MCA ran 7 centres from February-April with 245 young kids taking part in the programme. The MCA were able to provide paid coordinators at all these centres to oversee the programme. In promoting the programme the MCA also visited 31 Manawatu-Tararua Schools, delivered 160 awareness lessons, and issued over 4000 giveaway packs to kids at schools.

Our Saturday morning Kiwi Cricket competition again proved to be very popular and we saw an increase in teams this season with 49 Kiwi Cricket teams competing on Saturday mornings. Kiwi Cricket is the first real „modified playing‟ opportunity for our youngsters and the continual growth of this area is crucial to creating a big base of cricket players in the region.

This summer we once again ran the „Kiwi Open Day‟ that was held at the Endeavour Community Trust Cricket Centre and Action Indoor Sports. It was a great success with over 200 kids receiving coaching from Manawatu representative players over the course of the day. We were also able to talk to over 120 parents at the „Parent In-Service‟ we ran at each venue where we supplied them with information about Kiwi Cricket and the MCA Development Programme. As a result of this open day 26 parents attended the Kiwi Coaching Course the following week.

Community Coaching Programme – Clubs Our funding from Endeavour Community Trust again allowed us to implement our community cricket coaching initiative that involves significant work with our clubs. This year we were again able to provide $3000 worth of funding to 6 premier one clubs. We also expanded the programme to include Feilding CC and Feilding High School which is a great result and the structures being put in place are already bearing fruit. To be eligible for this funding all clubs signed a service level agreement with the MCA which included a range of development initiatives they would be required to complete. These initiatives included: appointing a suitable Club Coaching Coordinator to run structured club practices, provide candidates to attend MCA coaching courses, and provide coaching for two secondary school teams at their identified club/school link. All coaches provided were fully qualified with a level one certificate or working towards their level one. As a result of the club coaching initiative over 185 coaching sessions were delivered throughout the schools by the clubs.

- 9 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + This season we also made some changes to the Club Competitions. Premier 3 became solely a one-day competition and Premier 4 a new Twenty20 grade. These changes were made to reflect the changing nature of participation with the surge in popularity of the shorter versions of the game. We believe in trying to provide the type of competitions to cater for all our stakeholders and we now have 4 grades of Saturday senior cricket that cover all forms of the game. These changes have been well received by clubs and hopefully we will continue to see the benefits in coming seasons.

Another good introduction this season was the Twenty20 Tournament held on the last weekend of club cricket. The tournament was coordinated with the Junior and Senior prizegivings which added to the atmosphere of the weekend. Twenty20 is a great advertisement for the game and the tournament format looks like becoming a regular fixture on the season calendar.

While mentioning some of our successful modified versions of the game we cannot overlook the huge number of social cricketers playing in the region. Our twilight cricket numbers have been growing considerably over the last couple of seasons with 31 teams participating on Tuesday and Thursday evenings this summer. These players are just as important as senior club cricketers in the overall fabric of Manawatu Cricket.

Women‟s and Girl‟s Cricket This season has been a break-through year for Women‟s cricket in the region. After many years of building up junior player numbers we made a conscious decision to provide a definite playing pathway for junior girls through to senior women. We were also able to employ Rachel Candy as our Women‟s Cricket Coordinator for the season. We ran a number of junior programmes including our Intermediate Girls Competition, Secondary School Girls‟ Indoor and Twenty20 Competitions. We also selected Manawatu U14 Girls‟ and Secondary School Girls‟ representative squads that trained and played over the summer. All the competitions had encouraging numbers as we continue to build our player base and there was some good talent coming through to the representative teams.

The most significant addition to the Women‟s Cricket playing pathway this season was the establishment of the Pelorus Trust Women‟s Club Competition, only the 6th such competition in the country. The competition was played on Wednesday nights at Hokowhitu Park and was a huge success with an encouraging standard of play seen. The support from Aero, Coke and particularly the Pelorus Trust in making this competition happen was much appreciated. Also, thanks to Rachel Candy for the superb work in coordinating the competition and creating a base of women‟s players

- 10 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + in the region that we can only build from. A great spin-off of the women‟s competition was the large number of players we were able to train with the women‟s rep squad. There is no doubt that the achievement of the rep team in becoming Central Districts champions was a reflection of the work put into creating the club competition and a quality training programme.

In-Schools Coaching The Endeavour Community Trust In-Schools Coaching Programme was a huge success this summer. With the additional funding gained from Endeavour we were able to significantly expand the programme from last year. The programme involved coaching at 20 selected schools – 10 primaries, 5 secondary and 5 intermediates – where MCA coaches went into these schools and delivered quality coaching sessions to help improve cricketing standards at the schools. 176 In- Schools coaching sessions were conducted throughout the summer. We also conducted school visits at 4 Dannevirke schools to promote their Junior Cricket Club and over 700 kids were involved in cricket lessons.

Schools Cricket This season we had 49 Kiwi Cricket teams, 31 hardball teams at Primary and Intermediate level, 8 „Slog Sixes‟ teams, 30 Secondary boys‟ Saturday morning teams, 8 Secondary Girls‟ Outdoor teams, 10 Secondary Girls‟ Indoor teams, 4 Intermediate Girls‟ teams, and a further 7 school teams playing in senior cricket. PNBHS also ran a successful mid-week junior league and Twenty20 competitions with 12 teams involved.

National Schools Competitions Manawatu schools again had good success in the National Schools Competitions. We had 7 Gillette Cup, 4 NZCT Girls‟ Cup, 4 NZCT Junior Boys‟, 2 Milo Shield, and 7 Milo Cup teams enter the various competitions this year. From these competitions the Dannevirke Milo Cup team made the Western regional final where they unfortunately lost to St Georges from Wanganui. Palmerston North Boys‟ High School again had a very successful year with the 1st XI finishing a very respectable 3rd at the Gillette Cup finals held at Fitzherbert and Manawaroa Parks in December. This was a very successful tournament that continues to confirm what a superb cricketing destination the Manawatu is. The PNBHs Junior Boys‟ team was not able to repeat the efforts of last season‟s team and win the Junior Boys‟ National finals after they were unfortunately knocked out in the CD final by Lindisfarne College. PNGHS 1st XI also did well to make it to the Eastern regional final against Havelock North.

- 11 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Coach Education Coach education was a real focus area for us this year and we were able to provide a number of quality coach education opportunities over the season that were well received. Over the course of the year we trained 34 Have-a-Go coaches, 26 Kiwi Coaches, 10 Coaching a Cricket Team coaches, 5 Level One coaches and 6 Skills Challenge coaches. This was an excellent response and it‟s great to see so many people involved in coaching our game. Also, thanks to the 14 coaches involved with the MILO HAG, Girls cricket, In-Schools, Representative, and Club/School link coaching programmes that the MCA was able to have working regularly with our regions young players over the season.

Community and Charity Work This season a national cricket day was organised by NZC in conjunction with the CPA and the district associations where all First Class contracted players were made available to their home associations to visit schools. The day was an outstanding success with thousands of school children around the country getting the chance to rub shoulders with their cricketing idols. In the Manawatu, local Central Stag and White Fern Rachel Candy visited Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School and Feilding High School. They ran coaching sessions at PNINS and played a promotional 8 a-side game at Feilding High School. The day was a great success and created a great buzz at the start of the season.

JCB Rep Sides The MCA again offered a comprehensive Junior representative playing and training programme over the season. The players once again attended the 10 week Winter Programme which meant they hit the ground running come the start of the season. The winter programme continues to allow us to work with a large pool of the best young players and instill in them quality basics and training habits. The playing programme was once again extensive and included CD Tournaments for the U13, U15, and U17 teams whom all performed strongly, and the Wanganui Cricket Festivals for all junior rep teams. Each team‟s performance and reports are detailed later in the report and I encourage you to check out some of the fantastic achievements by our players and teams over the season.

I would like to thank all the coaches involved in the JCB Programme – Craig Rowe, Frazer Allan, Chad Law, Scott Robson, Andre Richards, Neil Barnett and Robert Sheary – for their great efforts throughout the year. The success of our teams and rep programme is underlined by the fantastic support of our parents, and in particular, our rep managers. A massive thank you goes out to all the managers for their time and effort they have put into organising the teams this year. Thanks

- 12 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + also to the support and encouragement of the parents, and lastly thanks to the players for their dedication over the year.

A considerable thank you must go to the continued support of our funding partners, Endeavour Community Trust, for their significant financial assistance that allows the MCA to heavily subsidise the cost of the rep programme. With their continued support we will continue to offer a comprehensive programme to keep producing the next generation of Black Caps.

MCA High Performance Academy The successful MCA High Performance Academy continued over the winter with the support of the Endeavour Trust. The opportunities we are able to provide our talented junior and senior players through this initiative are fantastic, and we must once again thank Endeavour Community Trust for making this possible. This year‟s academy included input from NZC coaching staff Mark O‟Neill (batting), Dayle Hadlee (bowling), Dipak Patel (spin bowling) and Jason Mills (wicketkeeping). We also had great input from Mark Greatbatch, , Tony Blain, Bevan Griggs, and . The academy programme can be directly linked to the great improvements shown by many of our players over the season, with the significant number of players achieving higher honours evidence of the success of the programme.

Umpire’s Report

The 2008-2009 once again was a difficult season; we experienced the usual struggle to get umpires standing at all games. Umpire recruitment is still the number one concern for our association.

I would like to once again to thank all the members of the Manawatu Cricket Association for their support over the last season. The liaison between both associations is vital in progressing cricket in the Manawatu region.

To all of our members, a big thanks for your time and effort over the season and good luck for next year.

Peter Cook Chairman Manawatu Cricket Umpires Association

- 14 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Endeavour Community Trust Manawatu Men’s Rep Report

The 2008/9 season looked as if it would be a tough one for the Manawatu team. There were a number of losses from the previous season including Jarred Cunningham, Justin Lampard, Ewen Thompson and not least the decision by Gary Cunningham to step down as coach. That meant the team had lost some fine players and also a considerable amount of experience. In taking over the responsibility to coach the rep side season quite late in the off-season we weren‟t in a great position in terms of our preparation. However, we decided to run the programme with a „Leadership Group‟ made up of Andrew Wylie, Scott Baldwin and Luke Murray who took on extra responsibilities in the team environment. This would end up being one of the real positives of the season and the increased player input and „buy-in‟ contributed to our successes.

We were faced this season with 4 /Chapple Cup double header weekends which was an increase of one game from last year. In the lead up to the season some thorough planning and preparation was done on our opposition and our tactics for these games. Our trainings were then tailored to best prepare us for our upcoming challenges against specific opposition. With some clear plans and structures in place the squad ripped into training and the environment was very positive. I also made a conscious decision to extend our squad and create some more competition for places. I believe this was healthy for the team and players now realized they had to really perform to make the side and not take their positions for granted.

As always the MCA are committed to providing our rep team with as many fixtures as possible to help better prepare our players for the highest levels. With only an abbreviated season we again organized a number of warm up fixtures against quality opposition. Our warm up programme included 2 matches against , and one fixture against A and Hawkes Bay respectively. These additional matches were very worthwhile, and the overview of all the season‟s fixtures is below.

Labour Weekend Tour – Bay of Plenty This was an eagerly awaited trip for the squad and our first chance to play a competitive fixture together. The aim was to play two 50 over matches against Bay of Plenty at , take an extended squad to give as many players an opportunity to push for selection, and also to use the weekend as a team building exercise. Unfortunately the early season weather had an influence on the trip and the first match had to be adandoned. However, we were able to get a match in on the Monday after travelling to to get on an appropriate ground. After losing the toss we were put into bat on a tricky wicket that had obviously been under covers. After some initial struggles Scott Baldwin and George Worker dug in to turn our innings around. George went on to

- 15 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + make a well compiled 54 and then a superb 8th wicket partnership of 68 between Andrew Wylie 49* and Roald Badenhorst 24* saw us through to a competitive 191 off our 50 overs.

After posting what we thought was a defendable score and identifying some key areas for our bowling group we felt positive heading into our first fielding effort of the season. We then proceeded to rip through the BOP batting line up in a dominant display with the ball and in the field to finally dismiss them for 90. There were some outstanding individual performances including 3 for 16 from Jonny Lash on debut and 3 for 15 from Scott Baldwin. It was a great all-round bowling effort with everyone stepping up and executing the plans we had talked about. It was a happy team that made the long trip home after the game.

Warm Up v Hawkes Bay We made our way across to Nelson Park in Napier for what has now become a traditional warm up fixture against the Bay. It was decided before the match that both teams would bat 60 overs each and there would be no limits on bowlers to give both teams the maximum opportunity to give players a run. We lost the toss and Hawkes Bay took the opportunity to bat on a fair wicket with a bit in it for both batsmen and bowlers. Our bowlers again bowled with discipline in an encouraging performance and restricted the Bay to 209 all out off their 60 overs. Hawkes Bay were only able to put together one partnership of substance with their fifth wicket putting on 96, this puts into perspective the rest of our bowling performance if you take this partnership out of the Hawkes Bay total and they would have only managed a paltry 113 for 9. The outstanding performance of the innings was Abhi Ganugapati‟s 5 for 55 on debut bowling his off-spin.

In our innings we managed to squeeze through to 193 for 9 off our 60 overs. There were a number of good starts including Luke Murray 23, Matthew Short 39 and Scott Baldwin 37, and some useful partnerships put together but in the end or innings never really got any momentum. However, it was again a useful exercise and all the players got some much needed time in the middle against strong opposition.

Wellington A at Manawaroa Park Our next warm up game was our annual fixture against a very strong Wellington A side. This would prove to be a big wakeup call for us heading into the start of the Hawke Cup programme. We won the toss and decided to bowl first in conditions that we thought would offer us a bit. However, we put together probably our poorest bowling and fielding effort of the season. Wellington got through to a very good 283 for 7 off their 50 overs and put pressure on us throughout the innings with their positive stroke play and excellent running between the . We didn‟t respond with the ball, often bowling too short or giving too much width, and our ground fielding wasn‟t up to rep standard.

- 16 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC +

Our reply with the bat was equally as poor as our fielding effort and we only managed 204 all out in 43 overs, thanks largely to a 77 10th wicket partnership from Matt Borren and Michael Mason. Gary Hodge got 41 at the top of the order and Matt Short 32 but other than that we showed nowhere near the required intent both in stroke play and running between the wickets that we needed to. We were well beaten and it was a performance we were determined not to repeat again.

Hawke Cup v Nelson at Trafalgar Park Our first Hawke Cup fixture couldn‟t come around quick enough and it wasn‟t an easy ask against a Nelson side that we have traditionally struggled against away from home. Nelson won the toss and elected to bat first on a very low and slow wicket that offered little or no movement. On an extremely unresponsive pitch and short square boundaries our bowling unit bowled with great discipline and purpose. The team was led superbly by Black Cap Michael Mason with the new ball but the two outstanding bowling performances came from Robert Sheary with a phenomenal 2 for 52 off 28 overs and Cody Andrews with a great return of 4 for 52 off 19 overs. We restricted Nelson to 278 all out off 102 long overs in a great all-round performance that included 30 maiden overs which enabled us to build pressure on a very placid wicket.

In our reply to Nelson‟s total it was obvious from the start that this match would be a scrap for first innings. They had taken all of day 1 to score 278 so it was a matter of us setting ourselves to do the same and knock off the target a little bit at a time. In what was probably our best batting performance of the season we did exactly that and got first innings points in a very professional manner. By 5.30pm stumps were pulled with our score at 403 for 8 and the first innings points in the bag – a great start to the season! Our innings was notable for the huge 4th wicket partnership of 285 between Dave Meiring and Rob Sheary. They both dominated the Nelson attack and showed great patience, concentration and desire to see us through to our target. Dave went on to score 112 on debut in a fantastic effort that would prove his ability at this level, while Rob pushed on to score his 2nd rep century and cap off a man-of-the match performance with his dominant 166. We had set the standard for the season and it was important we now maintained it.

Chapple Cup v Nelson at Trafalgar Park We knew with the draw some of our closest rivals had in the Hawke Cup that the Chapple Cup could well be our best chance of getting something out of the season. After our convincing win the day before in the Hawke Cup match the team arrived at the ground in good spirits and confident of playing well again. Nelson won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket that was getting lower and slower every over played on it. We therefore knew that we would have to restrict them to a low score as chasing would not be easy on that type of wicket. After a little bit of a shaky start

- 17 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + with the new ball we managed to gain the initiative in the match with some good pressure and at one stage we had Nelson 108 for 6. At this point we should have rammed home our dominance and look to bundle them out for under 150, however in the turning point of the match, two of their experienced batsmen dug in and batted really well to put on 89 for the 8th wicket and see them through to a competitive 222. We were perhaps guilty of letting the pressure off but to their credit they batted very well to turn the match.

Our reply got off to a very good start with Luke Murray and Will Murrie putting on 104 for the first wicket in good time. They showed good intent and ran very well between the wickets to give us some momentum. However, with the fall of Will Murrie for 48 and then Luke Murray shortly after for 65, we simply lost all our momentum. It wasn‟t easy to come out and score straight away on the slow, low wicket and we went from 100 without loss to be 159 for 7 with an asking rate of 6 an over. Between overs 30 and 40 we only managed to put on 25 runs, and ultimately, our inability to rotate the strike during this period cost us the game. In the end we finished on 213 for 8, 10 runs short of our target. Matthew Short displayed some good hitting to score 50 and give us chance but it wasn‟t enough unfortunately as the damage had already been done. A disappointing loss in the end against a team we knew we could beat but it was also a valuable lesson in momentum swings in one day cricket and how we have to identify them and wrestle back the initiative.

Hawke Cup v Hawkes Bay at Nelson Park This was a very important weekend in our season and would undoubtedly determine whether we would be in the running for a Hawke Cup challenge at the end of season. We had lost vice-captain and key all-rounder Scott Baldwin to injury which was a blow to the team but we were still confident after our first round result against Nelson and our pre-season showing against the Bay. After looking at the wicket it wasn‟t your typical Nelson Park pitch. It was quite green and clearly had some moisture in it that would assist the bowlers. We therefore, proceeded to win the toss and take the positive decision to bowl first against a Hawkes Bay lineup that we thought we could make inroads against. However, how wrong this would prove! We actually bowled very well in the first hour and we had Hawkes Bay 3 down early on. However, as the wicket flatten out and with the fast outfield Hawkes Bay began to take control. We started to go away from our bowling plans and we were far too short which allowed easy runs for the Bay batsmen. At tea the game was quite evenly balanced with Hawkes Bay 170 for 4, however, they had all the momentum and we had dropped 5 catches in the first two sessions that if we had taken would have put us right on top. After tea Hawkes Bay came out and proceeded to take the game to us. We bowled poorly and they rode their luck but they basically smashed us to all parts and posted an intimidating 450. Two of their batsmen scored centuries and we were left licking our wounds.

- 18 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC +

There was no doubting that chasing 450 was going to be a tremendous effort but we felt we had batsmen in form and with the wicket now flattened out, this was as good a chance as any. However, in what was the most disappointing effort I‟ve been involved in with a Manawatu side, we were all out for 174 in just 50 overs. We were 4 for 40 within the first hour and simply didn‟t show the required skill, guts and attitude to be playing at that level. It was interesting that the only scores of note came from our most experienced players with captain Andrew Wylie 50* and Michael Mason 35 being the only ones to show those traits in this innings. Embarrassingly, we were made to follow on and we managed to avoid an outright defeat, finishing the day 249 for 7. There were some better performances notably from Gary Hodge 34, Matthew Short 32, Andrew Wylie 63 and Rob Sheary with a determined 66*. We were now faced with the reality of having to rely on other results going our way to be able to get a Hawke Cup challenge.

Chapple Cup v Hawkes Bay at Nelson Park After the huge disappointment of the day before in the Hawke Cup match it was going to be a massive task for the team to turn the tables on Hawkes Bay. We approached this game as a chance for „redemption‟. We felt we had nothing to lose, as many would be quite rightly writing us off after our last performance, so we decided we wanted to play with freedom and execute the plans we had been working on for months.

Hawkes Bay won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bat. What followed was a bowling and fielding performance that was in complete contrast to the Hawke Cup match. Jonny Lash came into the side and took 3 for 37 from 10 overs with the new ball and Michael Mason was superb taking 2 for 15 off 10 overs including an amazing 5 consecutive maidens. We had Hawkes Bay battling at 143 for 7 after 40 overs and only a dashing 8th wicket partnership 84 got the Bay through to 227 off their 50 overs. This was a huge effort in turning around our performance and the Bay only managed to set a defendable total through a very well compiled 93* from their number 5.

While we knew that 227 wasn‟t enough on that wicket and fast outfield, our batting performance from the previous day did not give us much confidence and you sensed that Hawke Bay also felt they were in the game if they could get a few early wickets. However, we went about our batting with far more purpose and desire than the previous day. We took them on through our brave stroke making, positive running, and also by meeting head on the verbal exchanges that are part of playing Hawkes Bay. Will Murrie and Dave Meiring put us in a strong position with a 105 run 2nd wicket partnership that put the Bay on the back foot. We then lost both Will (42) and Dave (68) in quick succession and the nerves were back. We had learnt from our last game against Nelson where we lost momentum in this situation, and to the players credit they all came out and played

- 19 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + with real purpose and intent to ensure we stayed on track. The game was going down to the wire and it was all about who could hold their nerve. There were a number of small, quick fire contributions from our middle order and it wasn‟t until Bryce Grant came to the wicket that we finished the game off. Bryce struck a brilliant 34 not out off just 24 balls to see us pass the target with 10 balls remaining. This was a superb win and a satisfying turnaround from the day before. To come off such a poor performance the day before and win against a strong side showed the character in the team. We were now really starting to believe in ourselves.

Hawke Cup v Horowhenua-Kapiti at Fitzherbert Park Sometimes games against some of the so-called „smaller associations‟ can be tricky, as Wairarapa proved over the course of the season in the other pool. Therefore, it was important that we maintained our standards, executed well and approach the game with the same intent as we would a Hawke Cup challenge. Horowhenua-Kapiti on paper were considerably weaker than us but as we all know it‟s what happens out in the middle that counts.

On a very good Fitzherbert Park wicket we won the toss and immediately elected to bat first. What proceeded was simply a run fest. We posted a huge 406 for 6 declared off just 74 overs. The innings got off to a flying start with George Worker scoring 61 off just 59 balls but the rest of the innings was dominated by a phenomenal 219* off 198 balls from Dave Meiring. In only his 3rd game Dave was writing his name into the record books of Manawatu nd Cricket, he had scored the 2 highest score for Manawatu in all competitions. He struck a staggering 33 fours and 1 six in a commanding innings that will live in the memory for a long time.

Obviously, the intent was to score as many runs as quickly as possible to give us the chance to bowl Horowhenua out twice to secure that all important outright win. The players knew what they had to do with the ball and in the field and went out and skittled Horowhenua for a paltry

85 off just 30 overs. The figures of the innings came from Cody Dave Meiring burst onto the local Andrews who took 3 for 21 off 9 hostile overs that were far too quick cricket scene with of the best club and Rep seasons by a Manawatu for the Horowhenua batsmen. We immediately made them follow on as batsmen in many years we looked to reach our outright goal as quickly as possible. To Horowhenua‟s credit they showed far more fight in the 2nd innings and made us work hard for our wickets. We eventually dismissed them for 216 in just over 60 overs which was a little flattering to them with some big hitting at the end giving their score respectability. George Worker returned the outstanding figures of the innings of 5 for 109 but the important job was done and we were keeping the pressure on the leading teams.

- 20 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC +

Chapple Cup v Horowhenua-Kapiti at Fitzherbert Park After our great Chapple Cup win against Hawkes Bay and a convincing Hawke Cup win over the previous two days, we were again looking to take the game to Horowhenua and record a convincing win. We were able to field arguably our best team of the season with Black Caps Jamie How and Michael Mason both playing along with CD Stag George Worker. Unfortunately we wouldn‟t get to see much of any of these players as the game ended up being incredibly one- sided. With the potential of some rain around we decided to make the prudent decision to bowl first after winning the toss, despite the wicket being another good batting surface. Andrew‟s decision to bowl was vindicated with our bowlers rolling Horowhenua for just 67 off 31 overs. All the bowlers contributed with the standouts being Michael Mason 3 for 15 and Scott Baldwin 3 for 8. Horowhenua weren‟t able to put any partnerships together and we simply were too disciplined with the ball and in the field.

We then chased down the target of 68 in just 6.5 overs with George Worker smashing 48 off just 19 balls to see us home with ease. While we again performed well it was a worry to see the poor quality of opposition we were faced with. However, that is out of our hands and the massive win did wonders for our net run rate and put us in a strong position heading into the final game.

Hawke Cup v at Fitzherbert Park Heading into the last game of the season we were still in with a mathematical chance of getting a Hawke Cup challenge. However, there would have to be a number of results go our way so realistically this game was about playing good positive cricket and finishing the season with a good result.

We won the toss and once again backed our bowlers to do a job against the Taranaki batsmen. What followed was a pretty even battle on a wicket that was good for both sides. The Naki put together a good 2nd wicket partnership of 86 that put them in a good position of 100 for 1 but we once again managed to fight back and pull ourselves back into the contest. The effort was lead by Scott Baldwin who finished with a superb 5 for 63 off 16 overs and was ably supported by Abhi Ganugapati with 2 for 40 and Rob Sheary 2 for 44. Taranaki eventually got through to 255 all out after some good contributions from their tail end. The innings was however marred by some poor umpiring decisions and a complete lack of sportsmanship from a particular Taranaki batsman who went on to be their top run scorer. Our players felt very hard done by in the circumstances and it was something that would become an unfortunate blight on the 2 matches over the weekend.

Despite all that we knew we had a job to do with the bat and if we applied ourselves it would be a target well within our reach. We got off to a very good start with Luke Murray and Jason McGregor

- 21 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + putting on 70 for the 1st wicket, and then what would be our Achilles heel all season, we lost wickets in bunches. We found ourselves up against it at 106 for 5 which was very frustrating considering we had talked about losing wickets in groups at length and identified it as an area to improve. We did recover and show some fight as we had all season, and a fine 111 run partnership between captain Andrew Wylie and young put us in a position to win the game. However, when we lost Dane for a fluent and mature 73 and the team score at 217, we once again managed to capitulate with first innings points in our grasp. We lost our last 5 wickets for just 20 runs to be all out for 237. To put our problems in perspective we had two partnerships of 70 and 111 respectively, and then no other partnership over 25 in the innings. Once again we just weren‟t getting enough guys contributing to the team effort when it mattered most. Some of it can be put down to experience but a number of these players have been around long enough now that that excuse just doesn‟t cut it anymore. We have to remedy our mental toughness in the longer version of the game if we are realistic about challenging for the Hawke Cup in the future.

Chapple Cup v Taranaki at Fitzherbert Park Basically our season would boil down to this game. With our chances of a Hawke Cup challenge taken from our grasp the day before we now knew that our only opportunity to pick up some silverware lay with the Chapple Cup. The equation was simple for both teams – win and you were in the final, lose you missed out. Therefore, the match took on considerable importance for both teams and it would end up being probably the most intense Chapple Cup game I‟ve been involved in.

For once we didn‟t win the toss and we were sent into bat. The players were well up for the game and the batting effort that followed was extremely good in a pressure situation. Dane Cleaver and Luke Murray put on an outstanding 104 for the 1st wicket off just 100 balls. Dane belied his tender age of just 17 to play like a seasoned First Class player and smashed the Naki bowlers to all parts for a terrific 86 off 74. He really gave our innings huge impetus that was carried on by Andrew Wylie with 43 and finished off expertly at the end again by Bryce Grant with 36* off 35 balls. We had posted a very competitive 277 that put us in a strong position but we knew the Naki would fight and that the game was far from over.

The Naki came out and went about chasing the total positively as they had to. However, we were able to keep them in check and at 138 for 6 it was looking a tough ask for them. They did though have their best batsman in and set, and this would prove to be crucial moment in the game. After a number of incidents, again involving this particular batsman from the Hawke Cup match that brought his sportsmanship into question, we had momentarily lost the plot. The series of unbelievable decisions that went in this batsman‟s favour, and his proceeding behavior, set our

- 22 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + guys off and what occurred from both teams should not happen on a cricket field. During this small period the mentioned batsman proceeded to take 22 runs off one over and single handedly begin to turn the match in Taranaki‟s favour. When he finally fell to Bevan Small he had scored 108 off just 88 balls and it was game on! Taranaki needed a run a ball for the final 10 overs and we knew we had to take 4 wickets. By this stage we had regained our composure and some fine death bowling from youngster Bevan Small and the experienced Scott Baldwin got us back on top, and along with a cameo bowling performance from medium pacer Jason McGregor who was superb we had pushed the match out of Taranaki‟s reach. We had dismissed them for 235 within 45 overs – we had made the Chapple Cup final! It must be said that the several behavioral incidents that occurred over the weekend was extremely disappointing. While I don‟t condone the reaction some of our players displayed at times, they were significantly provoked by extremely poor sportsmanship from the Taranaki player involved and some unbelievable umpiring at times. Despite these ugly scenes from the match we felt that the win was vindication for all that had gone against us during the game.

Chapple Cup Final v Nelson at Nelson Our eagerly awaited final against Nelson had finally come. This was a great chance to get some revenge on the only side to beat us in pool play but more importantly to finish the season with a trophy. We were able to select a strong side that included Black Cap Michael Mason and CD Stags Bevan Griggs and George Worker. However, we also knew that our real strength was in the players who had got us this far and there was no doubting how badly they wanted to win this final.

The game was originally meant to be played at Saxton Field but after considerable rain in the Nelson area the match was moved to a Club ground. The ground was very small but the wicket played very well and we are thankful for Nelson for doing everything to get a game played in trying circumstances.

We won toss and bowled first on a wicket Black Cap Michael Mason and the rest of the that had been under covers. Nelson Endeavour Community Trust Manawatu side watch on as the tense Chapple Cup Final enters batted positively on a wicket that played its thrilling last few overs. very well and took advantage of the small

- 23 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + club boundaries. We perhaps didn‟t bowl as well as we could have with only George Worker with 3 wickets making inroads into their batting. Nelson eventually posted a very competitive 251 off their 50 overs but with some rain during the interval and early in the innings our total was reduced to 242 off 42 overs which was a very challenging target in any situation, let alone a Chapple Cup final. However, we built some solid partnerships throughout the innings with many of the top order contributing including Luke Murray with 47 and Will Murrie and Bevan Griggs scoring valuable 30s, but the asking rate was always demanding and we really needed someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck and win it for us. At this stage Robert Sheary came to the crease and played an outstanding cameo as he bludgeoned 20 odd quick runs to give us some momentum that was carried on by captain Andrew Wylie. The game was to go right down to the wire with Grizz keeping his cool and supporting youngster Bevan Small who held his nerve. The game came down to us needing one run off the final ball of the game with one wicket in hand and to everyone‟s huge relief Grizz and Bevan burgled the winning run and it was an emotional Manawatu captain who ran down the wicket with his arms held high in the air as the team secured the Chapple Cup!! The buzz after the game was outstanding and the team knew they had achieved something special.

After reflecting on the season we can be proud of what we achieved as a young group. To win a trophy is a fine achievement and was great reward for all the effort put in by the squad over the winter and summer. For me the other real positives that came through this season included the development of our senior leadership group. The players themselves took on more responsibility with significant input into how we would prepare for matches both in terms of trainings and tactically. If we can continue to foster an environment that gives players responsibility and challenges them to take ownership they can only grow as players and individuals from that. We also managed to integrate a larger number of players into the squad this season. As always we end up using 20+ players over the course of a season so it seems logical that we should be involving all these potential players in the squad rather than just calling them up straight from club cricket not knowing our processes. By enlarging the squad we were able to have more players training at a higher standard, more players in a good environment that would help club cricket, more players who understood what we required of them if they came into the team, and most importantly from a performance perspective, we created more competition for places. I strongly believe we need this competition for places and open environment to push our players to get better.

The development of some young and new players to rep cricket has been very exciting this season. The emergence of Dave Meiring as a quality rep batsman was a pleasure to watch and his

- 24 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + selection in CD „A‟ along with Luke Murray was very pleasing. Rob Sheary also had a fine season with both bat and ball and his selection in CD „A‟ (but subsequently being unavailable because of work commitments) was great reward for the Palmerston man with a big heart. The emergence of Cody Andrews and Jonny Lash from quality club performers into representative cricketers was very encouraging. Both had very good seasons and if they show the required work ethic they will become the cornerstones of the team in the future.

Undoubtedly we are blessed with some exceptionally talented young players at the moment, and the performances of Dane Cleaver, Bevan Small and Abhi Ganugapati for the rep team this season was superb. They‟re players well ahead of their years and I‟m hopeful we can continue to provide an environment that will help them reach their potential.

However, while we must always take the positives from the season it‟s also important we acknowledge where we need to improve. We‟ve shown some weaknesses in the longer version of the game this season that we must improve if we want to challenge for the Hawke Cup. Too often we lost wickets in groups and simply didn‟t show the mental fortitude in tough situations. We have to look at ourselves individually and identify the areas where we‟re struggling technically, tactically and physically and do something about it. Sometimes this is the hardest thing to do as a player but if we are committed to improving then we have to be prepared to face the truth sometimes and put in the hard work. I‟m sure the foundations that have been built over the last few seasons and the players‟ commitment to performing well for Manawatu will ensure we can improve in these areas to make us the formidable team that we have the potential to be.

Congratulations to all those players who made higher honours this season. To Jacob Oram, Jamie How, Ross Taylor and Michael Mason, well done on your selection in the Black Caps. You‟re great role models for us all in the Manawatu and your commitment to the region is inspiring the next generation of Manawatu Black Caps. Well done to Bevan Griggs and George Worker for their season with the Central Stags and for their input with the Manawatu team. Well done to Luke Murray and Dave Meiring in playing for CD „A‟, and congratulations to Dane Cleaver, Bevan Small and for being selected in the New Zealand U19 training squad. It‟s great to see so many Manawatu players representing us at the highest levels of the game and is further proof that we are the leading district in the country.

I would also like to thank Scott Baldwin for his service and commitment as a player for Manawatu over a number of years. I wish you all the best in the UK and you will always be welcome back in the Manawatu.

- 25 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + To Andrew Wylie, while I‟m sad to see you retire from rep cricket, I thank you for your tremendous effort in captaining the Manawatu team over the last few seasons and for your commitment as a Manawatu player for over a decade. You were the backbone of the team and your leadership and hard nose approach Manawatu Captain Andrew “Grizz” Wylie ended his Rep career with a great season and lifting the prestigious Chapple Cup. to the game was invaluable. Your experience has undoubtedly helped Manawatu Cricket in a time of rebuilding over the last few seasons and you should feel proud in what you‟ve achieved with the team.

Finally, I‟m proud to say that we continue to provide a quality programme and environment for our cricketers in the Manawatu. I know that the MCA is not only committed to providing this environment but is intent on always trying to improve it through the development of our facilities and programmes for all our players. As long as the players bring the desire to learn, improve and work hard them I‟m sure we can help all players reach their potential.

- 26 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Manawatu Senior Women’s Rep Report

The 2008/09 season was easily the best the Manawatu Senior Women‟s Representative side has had in a number of years, with 3 wins from 3 games. Under the leadership of captain Sarah Norman and coach Peter Thompson the team developed as a unit and put together some good performances.

The first month of training saw at least 20 females attending weekly. This was a considerable increase from the numbers at trainings in the past and everyone that attended these trainings had the opportunity to increase their skill levels. The 20 was eventually cut to a squad of 15, from which the playing 12 were selected. The increase in the number of females attending training was a direct result from the inception of the women‟s T20 competition. More people playing cricket therefore generating more interest in representing the Manawatu, as well as creating a place for talent to be unearthed.

The squad had a mixture of ages and abilities and combined well as a team. There were 10 debutantes for the side throughout the course of the season. Lucy Doolan, current White Fern and member and a student at Massey University, made herself available for selection into the Manawatu side and her skill and expertise proved to be invaluable throughout the 3 game season. Melinda Hodgson, another current Wellington Blaze player and student at Massey University, also played for Manawatu in 2008. Rachel Candy again gained selection into the CD Hinds for the 2008/09 season, as well as continuing with her selection in the extended White Ferns Squad. Esther Lanser gained selection, as captain, into the CD Development Team and from there was selected for the CD hinds late in the season. Hester Nesbitt, Briar Cloake and Alice Ireton were all selected into the CD Development team. Sarah Norman managed the CD Hinds for the 2008/09 season but also gained selection for 3 of their games.

The first game of the season was against a slightly weakened Hawkes Bay team. Manawatu batted first and after a 91 run opening stand between Doolan (51) and Lanser (43) the team struggled and were all out for 167 in the 46th over. In reply Hawkes Bay lost wickets on a regular basis, with Hester Nesbitt picking up 4/26 from her 7 overs. A 64 run, 7th wicket stand, gave the visitors some hope but a tight bowling spell at the death from Norman (2/9 from 8 overs) saw Hawkes Bay bowled out for 154 in the 46th over.

- 27 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + The following week a slightly different team travelled to to take on Taranaki. Doolan (66) and Lanser(32) again got the team off to a great start, on a dodgy outfield, with the first wicket falling at 85. Nesbitt (32), Norman (59) and some quick scoring at the end by Candy (21 n.o.) saw the score through to 274/5. Taranaki lost a wicket in both the first and second overs, but a 68 run 3rd wicket stand saw their total regain some respectability. However, a fantastic display of bowling from Doolan (5/13 from 9overs), with contributions from Candy (2/17 from 8) and Rosie Wolland (2/5 from 4) saw Taranaki bundled out for just 86.

The final game of the season was against the Wellington Development side. Wellington were restricted to 178/6 from their 50 overs, with Norman (2/18 from 10) the pick of the bowlers. After losing Doolan early, the Manawatu batters put on two 50+ partnerships for the 2nd and 3rd wickets. Norman (71 no) controlled the chase brilliantly, and saw the team home in the 44th over for the loss of 7 wickets.

A number of young players debuted and performed well in 2008 and this bodes well for the future of Women‟s cricket in the Manawatu. There are also some young players who weren‟t selected this year but will continue to develop and will represent Manawatu in upcoming seasons. Peter Thompson ran some good training sessions with the team and it was great to have a coach available to attend all the games. Unfortunately due to other commitments he will not continue as coach for the 2009 season. Women‟s cricket is going from strength to strength in the Manawatu and the team is eager to remain competitive within the inter-district competition, and as a result, individuals will continue to be selected for higher honours.

- 28 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Women’s Twenty20 Competition

Second time round the competition was a lot easier to run as we had the player base/teams from November/December to build upon.

In 2009 PNGHS, Varsity and PN Women returned while Wanganui High School and St Matthews Collegiate were not a part of the competition during the second half of the season, Nga Tawa (with Esther Lanser as Player/Coach), Combined Services (mostly made up of the air force team) and HSOG joined the competition instead. This meant that we had 6 teams competing each week and it was great to see the number of Females participating continue to grow from the successful start to the competition during November/December 2008.

Each team managed to win at least one game during the season but it was PN Women who emerged unbeaten at the conclusion of the games to win the competition. This team was run by Sarah Norman and has a good core of players who will be invited to train with the Manawatu Women‟s side over the winter.

In order to get the competition running smoothly, each team had one member who was in charge of organizing their team each week. Most teams did this fantastically; Varsity struggled, however, due to players having trials and trainings for winter sports on Tuesday nights. This is one team where we need to have a bigger pool of players to call upon each week, so is something to push for next season. Obviously at the commencement of next season we won‟t be competing with winter sports so some of these players will be able to commit to the season.

PNGHS donated some of their old gear, mostly bats, so that each of the four club teams had a full set of gear, and a gear bag that each team was responsible for. A gear list was also handed out to ensure that all gear was returned at the end of the season. Contact lists were also handed out, two to each team, so that all players could fill both sheets out, one for the team‟s records and one for MCA use for contacts for winter training etc. Alongside the contact list an „opposition player of the game‟ sheet was handed out for completion after each game. Each team assigned 3 points, 2 points and 1 point to who they thought played the best in the opposition. These results were collected and tallied up to decide the overall Player of the season and also the 2 runners up.

Jane Barnett was judged to be the Player of the Season, with some outstanding performance with both the bat and ball as well as being a stand out fielder in the PNGHS team. Talitha Holt, also from PNGHS was in second place and Briar Cloake, from PN Women, rounded out the top 3

- 29 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + players. Aero Sports Protection, Mooses Sports, Revamp Hair and Coke all donated great products towards the Player of the Season and as a result these girls took home some pretty good prizes. Special thanks to Mouse and Pods who organized and cooked the BBQ that was run at the prize giving, it went down a treat with all who were there!

Hopefully we will be able to expand women‟s cricket in Palmerston North in the future as a result of the success of the Twenty20 competition.

- 30 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 17 Boys Rep Report

This season‟s U17 squad was one stacked with talent and a real pleasure to coach. Once again we had an extended squad of 18 players that trained over the winter and early summer in preparation for the CD U17 Tournament in December. Unfortunately our two warm up fixtures against Hawkes Bay and Horowhenua-Kapiti were cancelled due to unavailability because of exams for many of the players in both teams. This meant we went into the tournament without a game together but with many of the team playing together at school this didn‟t cause too many problems.

In the lead up to the Tournament we had 9 of our team involved with the Palmerston North Boys‟ High School 1st XI in the Gillette Cup national finals. This meant that most of the boys had 4 days cricket before the tournament had even started and would end up playing 8 days straight! During the Gillette Cup finals we had some of our players pick up injuries which meant we had to take 13 players to the tournament to give us cover.

Our first game was against Marlborough which was a solid win first up for the team. We won the toss and made a very competitive 266 for 4. Dane Cleaver and Mitchell Renwick got us off to a great start both scoring 60 at the top of the order. This laid the foundation for our powerful middle order to accelerate and reach a defendable total. Adam Milne scored an outstanding 86 not out as he dispatched the Marlborough bowlers to all parts and he shared a fine partnership with Tim Richards 55 not out, to finish our innings with great momentum.

Our bowlers then went about their business and bowled tidily against a Marlborough side that never looked like challenging our score. With Marlborough not showing any desire to try and win the game the intensity dropped off and we eventually dismissed them for 180. It was a solid performance with the big hearted Campbell Findlay leading the way and everyone who was thrown the ball bowling to a plan and doing a job for the team.

Our next pool match was against Taranaki, a side that should provide us with a good test. Unfortunately, we had suffered more injury setbacks yesterday with captain Dane Cleaver breaking his thumb which would put him out of the tournament. This added to our already impressive injury list of Josh Jaques (hamstring) and Bevan Small (shoulder) who were also unable to take a full part. However, this was a real opportunity for some of our younger and less experienced players to come to the fore. On this occasion stand in captain Tim Richards lost the toss and we were bowling first on a flat wicket. However, our boys bowled and fielded superbly to knock Taranaki over for a poor 130. Campbell Findlay again bowled with pace and aggression to knock the top off

- 31 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + the Taranaki batting taking 3 wickets. He was well supported by Philip Mecredy who was getting better with every game and Tim Richards who was miserly as ever. The really pleasing aspect of the performance was the effort in the field and the intensity the team showed, particularly with only 10 fit players.

With our two opening batsmen both out injured it gave Cameron McNaught and James Holland the opportunity to open the batting. They both got us off to a solid start with Cameron going on to score a match winning 80. He batted with superb patience and skill and never looked flustered at any point in his innings. Mitchell Renwick got another good start with 30 but unfortunately couldn‟t finish the job, which was left to Tim Richards and Seb Burrow to easily knock off the remaining runs. It was a comprehensive 7 wicket win and more or less guaranteed our place in the final.

Our last pool match was against Wairarapa with the last two days of the tournament being held at Frimley Park as Nelson Park was being used by the Black Caps and West Indies teams. We again went into the game with only 10 players and a specialist fielder in Bevan Small. We were hopeful that Josh Jaques would be fit for the final and it was just a matter of getting through our final pool game as best as we could. We won the toss and decided to bowl on a fair wicket that had a bit in it for both batsmen and bowlers. We bowled well again with Philip Mecredy, Chris King and Campbell Findlay bowling particularly well at the start of the innings. They all picked up wickets and Connar Morriss mopped up the tail with some quality medium pace bowling to have Wairarapa all out for 119.

Once again we would go about our chase with only 10 batmen which should not have been any problem. However, in this team‟s worst batting performance since the U15 tournament (I‟m sure they all remember that game!) we were bowled out for 108 with 15 overs still to play. We had gone out to bat thinking we had already won and we all know that cricket is a great leveler, particularly for those who think they have it all worked out as our boys did on this occasion. We didn‟t show any application and to Wairarapa‟s credit they bowled very well, and the end result was an embarrassing loss. Our boys had got the shock they needed heading into the final against Hawkes Bay the following day.

The final promised to be a good match with Hawkes Bay boasting a couple of quality players that on their day can be match winners. However, I felt we had many match winners of our own and I was confident our great team spirit and ability to always find a way to win when it counted would see us through. Josh Jaques was cleared to play, admittedly only at 80% at best but this was the final and there was no way he was going to miss this.

- 32 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC +

We won the toss and elected to bat first as we felt runs on the board was the positive move and then we could put pressure on their batting later in the day. We got off to a circumspect start with our top order playing to our plan of building a solid foundation for our strong middle order to take advantage of later in the innings. Mitchell Renwick scored a patient 25 and built a good foundation along with Tim Richards. Tim scored a mature 53 to put us in a strong position to launch for the last 10-15 overs. With this good foundation and the Hawkes Bay bowlers beginning to tire Adam Milne came to the crease and once again took the opposition bowling apart. He scored a swashbuckling 83 that was to turn the match in our favour and get us through to a competitive 232. The boys knew we had a defendable total, particularly with our bowling attack, and it was a matter of dismissing their key players and applying the pressure.

What followed was an outstanding performance from the team. The whole team bowled and fielded with purpose and aggression which was simply too much for Hawkes Bay and we dismissed them for just 90. Campbell Findlay who had bowled superbly all tournament, ripped out their top order and finished with 5 for 25, and 14 wickets for the tournament. All the bowlers performed well and applied constant pressure. The boys had won the tournament convincingly and it was an extremely satisfying way to finish.

From the tournament Dane Cleaver, Bevan Small, Tim Richards and Adam Milne were selected for the Central Districts U17 team to play at the National U17 tournament. Josh Jaques was also named non-travelling reserve for the team.

Our Most Improved player for the tournament was Philip Mecredy, Best Team player – Campbell Findlay, and Most Valuable Player – Adam Milne.

It was an outstanding effort from the whole squad over the season and for those players who now move out of the JCB system I wish them all the best in their cricket and hope to see them in the Manawatu Senior Men‟s squad in years to come.

- 33 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 15 Boys Rep Report

Our first game of the season was against Wanganui and we posted 260 for 6 off our 50 overs batting first. We then bowled very well, dismissing them for 110. Thomas Kensington with 87 and Robbie Yule with 5/32 stood out with impressive performances in this match.

The following weekend we travelled up to Ongo Ongo. We batted first again and no batsmen fired. Only two batsmen made it to double figures. We were dismissed for 66 in the 23rd over. With hardly any runs to defend, we fired everything at the Hawkes Bay batsmen, but they eventually chased down our target in the 22nd over with four wickets down. This was a disappointing game for us.

In December, we went to the Central Districts selection tournament in Masterton with high hopes. We played Taranaki on the first day and batted first we were bowled out for 152 in the 58th over with Brynn Cleaver top-scoring with 47. With an average batting performance, we knew we had to bowl well to get the win. Fortunately we did that, and eventually bowled them out for 83 in the 32nd over with Matt Wells 3/21 and Tiago Jahufer 3/16 the main destroyers.

The following day we played Horowhenua Kapiti and in a great performance won outright. After bowling them out cheaply in the first dig, we batted and Brynn Cleaver (57*) and Hayden Hill (116*) put on a decent 182 for the first wicket before we decided to declare. In Horowhenua‟s 2nd innings, we bowled them out for 79 with Robbie Yule 5/11 and Tiago Jahufer 3/19 ripping through their side, giving us that comprehensive outright win by an innings.

Next we played Marlborough in a rain affected match. We batted first, and got a good 257/7 declared with Brynn Cleaver making another big score with 85. Unfortunately, Marlborough never got to bat due to bad weather.

That put us in the final to play Hawkes Bay. But the rain still kept coming down, therefore there was no play. We were 1st equal. At the presentation Brynn Cleaver and Robbie Yule made the Central Districts Under 15 side with Robbie also being named captain.

After the Christmas break we went up to the annual Wanganui Festival. We played six games overall, against Taraunga, H.P, Taranaki North, E.D.C.A, Taranaki South and Horowhenua Kapiti. We won all our games, but had two close encounters with E.D.C.A and Taranaki South. The others we won convincingly.

After a long break we played Hawkes Bay and we batted first and put up a better fight than last time making 166 all out with Regan Dewar making a gutsy 72 battling through a lot of pain in his back and James Ross also contributing 36. We had confidence going into the field to defend this total but after bowling well at the start, we fell away and lost the game by 5 wickets.

Our last game of the season saw us come up against Horowhenua Kapiti again. We batted first, but didn‟t do too well being bowled out for only 103 in the 29th over. Only Thomas Kensington (32) and Matt Wells made it to double figures. We had to bowl well to win, which we did thanks to a great start from Robbie Yule 3/10.

- 35 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 14 Boys Rep Report

The season started off in November 2008 with an easy win against Wanganui at home in Palmerston North by 144 runs. The U14's travelled to Hawkes Bay next and batted first. We made 195 runs in our 50 overs. But Hawkes Bay chased that total down with 4 overs to spare and 7 wickets down.

We then thrashed Horowhenua/Kapiti at home. Next game we travelled to Hawera to play Taranaki. It was a green bouncy wicket but we posted 165 runs. We then bowled Taranaki out, winning by 114 runs. In mid-December there was the CD U15 Tournament held at Rathkele College. Four boys from the U14's were chosen to form a team with the U15's. They were Hayden Hill, Navin Patel, Arana Noema-Barnett and Anurag Ganuapati, with Navin Patel going on to be selected as a non travelling reserve for the CD U15 team. This was a big achievement for an U14 player considering the amount of talent there was.

In the New Year, the U14's went to the Wanganui Festival. We allowed each player to bat at least five times and many players bowled as well. Despite the changes we had comfortable wins against Taranaki, EDCA Gold and Green and North Harbour. We were challenged by Taradale and Hamilton but won showing fighting spirit to finish the tournament undefeated.

In February 2009, we had a terrible loss against Taranaki at Wallace Park on an artificial pitch. The next game was against the old enemy, Hawkes Bay. This time we won by 7 wickets. This was the first time this team had beaten Hawkes Bay in four years! We tried and failed at U11, U12, U13 but not in U14's!!

The last game we went to Kena Kena Park and played Horowhenua/Kapiti. We batted first and posted 188 runs against tight bowling and excellent fielding. We then bowled HK out for 45 runs! Navin (3 wickets) and Anurag (2 wickets) blasting the top order away inside 10 overs!

Manawatu U14‟s finished the season with a 10 win and 2 lose record. Most improved player was Darryl Spencer for steadily picking up wickets to finish with 16 all season. Team Player was captain Navin Patel for hitting 210 runs and taking most wickets with Cameron Rowe, 23 in total. Most Valuable Player was Cameron Rowe. He hit 297 runs and got 23 wickets. His best bowling was 5 wickets for 5 runs against Hamilton during the Wanganui Festival.

- 36 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 13 Boys Rep Report It was a good start to the season in that we were able to play four games before the Wanganui tournament, however we only managed to win one of these. Despite dropping 3 of the first 4 games, the boys rallied for the Wanganui tournament winning 5 of the 6 games, losing narrowly to Tauranga on the last day. A notable statistic that emerged from the tournament and the season has been that this team tends to win the majority of their games when batting first. Chasing down scores appears to be an area that needs further development.

The Wanganui tournament again provided all the players with much needed game time and opportunity for them to exercise their cricket skills with each of them achieving individual successes with either bat and or ball over the 4 days. With the knowledge that they tend to win when batting first and coming off a successful Wanganui tournament the boys went to the CD tournament in Palmerston North and performed exceptional well winning all 3 games including a tough encounter with Wellington.

The game results for the season were, played 14, won 9, lost 5 with 4 of the losses being in the scheduled rep games and the wins being at the tournaments. Overall this team has improved again on last years results and in their individual performance and development. On this basis, it is fair to say they have had a great season and a tribute to the MCA coaching staff of Scott Robson, Ian Sandbrook and Andre Richards.

In previous seasons the team results have been attributed to the individual performances of a few, however a team is only as good as it‟s weakest link. Over this season we have seen a number of boys improve in many facets of their game and accordingly the results have been more attributed to solid performances across the whole team. That is, the so called weaker links have grown, strengthened and been significant contributors to many of the great results the team has enjoyed.

As a unit the U13 team bond well and continue to go from strength to strength with each game. The Wanganui Tournament and CD tournament being a key factor contributing towards a strong teamwork culture with all boys working, co-operating and socialising extremely well together. All boys demonstrated respect for one another, the management team and discipline on and off the field. This side continues evolve into a tight team unit where positive encouragement and support of each other is a key factor of their individual development and successful team performance.

At the current rate of progress and as the individual skill levels develop this group of boys will evolve into a formidable cricketing unit in the years to come.

- 37 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 12 Boys Rep Report

The 08/09 season was a very mixed bag for the Manawatu U12 rep team this year. It was a team that looked very strong on paper and was loaded with potential, but for reasons unbeknown this did not translate onto the playing field which as we all know is where it matters.

The team made a promising start to the season with wins over Wanganui and Horowhenua Kapiti and all signs pointed to a dominant season. However this was followed up by a string of losses that culminated in a poor performance at the Wanganui Cricket Festival where they had one win in six games. The most frustrating aspect of this is that they beat one of the top teams but failed to beat five other sides who the team, had they played to their potential, would have easily beaten. The 4 day tournament provided many hard learnt lessons, and the kids realised that by failing to perform the basics consistently and letting the opposition dictate play, they were making the game very hard for themselves.

A return to training after this tournament saw renewed enthusiasm as the team went about getting their season back on track. However a tough double header against a strong Hawke‟s Bay saw back to back losses and although the team did not perform to their potential there were signs the players were learning and making improvements to their respective games.

We finished the season on a very positive note by beating Horowhenua Kapiti. At last players stood up and did the job for their team which was reflected in a convincing performance and one which they had always been capable of.

On the whole this season the Manawatu U12‟s did not do their talents justice, however a number of players performed consistently and showed very positive signs for the future. Luke McConaghty, a young all-rounder, picked up the team‟s most valuable player award for his significant contributions throughout the season. Cheydon Brooking was judged to be the most improved player due to his outstanding contributions with the new ball. He, like Luke, looks to be a fine prospect if he continues to work on his game. Another one with a big future is best team player Tom O‟Conner, who captained the team admirably and lead by example at all times.

A big thanks for the support of the parents, especially that of the Wenham‟s who were a great help in a managerial capacity. I look forward to touching base again in the near future and have high hopes for a vastly improved 2009/2010 cricket season.

- 38 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Under 11 White Boys Rep Report

Our Under 11 team had a great season playing 12 games for 8 wins and 4 losses. The team was a mixture of last year‟s development players and some Under 10 players experiencing representative cricket for the first time. Within the group are some very talented players with the potential to play a lot more rep cricket for Manawatu. I would like to thank MCA for organising games for our team when other areas seem to have given up the U11 idea. I think the U11 programme at MCA benefits are shown in the strength of our older rep sides. We played against Onslow in Wellington and then they played us in PN. They were great to work in with and were impressed with the quality of our players. The team won all its games outside camp – two versus Onslow, two versus Horowhenua and two versus Manawatu Under 11 Green.

Wanganui Camp was once again the highlight for the players. Probably didn‟t play quite to our potential but we tried to give everyone a chance of equal game time and although this may have cost a couple of wins we saw some players take their chance and show potential we may not have seen before. Big thanks to Trevor Mitchell who helped manage the team at camp and for the rest of the season. He was great with the boys and a great help sharing umpiring, etc. The players had a great time at camp and we worked in closely with the Manawatu U11 Green team, meeting together like one big squad which the players really enjoyed. Thanks to Frazer and Suzie for helping make the camp successful for all the boys.

I would like to thank MCA for the opportunity to manage this team which I have really enjoyed especially seeing the players develop over the season. Finally I hope the players appreciate the opportunities they are given by MCA as these opportunities aren‟t always available in other areas. Thanks and I look forward to helping out next season.

Under 11 Green Rep Report

Wanganui Development Tournament 2009 GAME 1 – Hamilton Gold: 35 Over Match. Fielded first in this match. Some very good bowling and fielding resulted in our dismissing Hamilton in the 35th over for 114. Although this could have been lower if we had reduced the number of extras, it was believed to be a very competitive total. Bowlers of note were: Keenan Scott – 5 overs: 3-11, Mitchell Dodd - 6 overs: 3-24, Cameron Huston – 4 overs: 2-5

Sensible patient batting was all that was required to reach the target of 114, but unfortunately this did not occur, with Ryan Noble making the only score of note (23), while no one else made double figures. We finished on 83 runs with about 7 overs remaining. So a disappointing/nervous start to the tournament, but lots of promise to come. The message was clear; when chasing, someone has to stand up and not leave it to your teammates. Result: Lost by 31 Runs

GAME 2 – Auckland Eastern Districts : 30 Over Match. Batted first this time - again an area of the game that ultimately let us down. We didn‟t face our overs against some solid but not spectacular bowling, to post a score of only 73 runs. This included two unnecessary run outs. Halftime message was we have the score on the Board even if low so need to bowl and field well to create pressure. We did this with a solid start from the seamers, followed by a brilliant display of spin bowling from both ends to really put the brakes on Auckland. Braden Rowe 6 overs 3 – 15 and Keenan Scott 6 overs 0 – 10. However our score was never enough with Auckland passing our score with 6 overs remaining. Again if only we batted with more authority. Result: Lost by 5 wickets.

GAME 3 – Tauranga Blue : 30 Over Match. Back to fielding first. A combination of some tired bowling/fielding and very good batting resulted in Tauranga setting a big total of 168/5. This would require some much improved batting. This improvement was delivered, with some very good contributions made (Taine Mitchell 34*, Ryan Noble 21, Luke Scott 19, Braden Rowe 13*). Even with this improved effort we were always well behind the run rate required finishing on 125/5. If only we could have batted like this all tournament, could have had two victories under our belts. Result: Lost by 43 runs.

GAME 4 – Hamilton Black : 30 Over Match.

- 40 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + At the start of the day the team agreed that this was the day that we needed to step up. We targeted this game in particular as our “test match” with our strongest line up. The previous three games we had tried to give every player an equal opportunity to bat and bowl.

We won the toss and decided to field first. The team did indeed step up and put in a fine performance in the field. All bowlers bowled very good line and length, restricting Hamilton to just 108 runs. When Hamilton started to push the accelerator in the later overs we fielded well, completing a number of run outs. A total that we believed could be chased down, if we batted as well as the match the previous evening.

It is great to report that we batted very well, and made the score comfortably in the end with the loss of just three wickets. (Ryan Noble 31*, Braden Rowe 30*, Tim O‟Sullivan 17*).

Result: Won by 7 wickets (what a feeling).

GAME 5 – Horowhenua Kapiti : 30 Over Match.

From all the previous results the team knew that HK had yet to win a game. So the feeling was we had a chance to make it two from two for the day if we played to our potential.

Batted first in this match, and swapped the order around a little compared to the morning. Posted a reasonable total ( 119 / 8 )against competitive bowling. The main contributors were Mitchell Dodd 24 Tim O‟Sullivan 19 and Cameron Huston 15.

At the half way stage unsure if we had scored enough, but the bowlers knew it was up to them to win the match for us. What a fine job they did in the end, never panicking we restricted HK to 100/8 for our second victory of the day. Bowlers of note were Keenan Scott with the outstanding figures 4-7 off 5 overs, Mitchell Dodd 5 overs 2-10 and Nate Levin 5 overs 1-6. Also well done to Ryan Noble who took 3 catches.

Result: Won by 19 Runs

GAME 6 – Tauranga White : 30 Over Match.

- 41 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Last game of the tournament, on the hottest day by far. We bowled first and put up a solid performance against a very good team in the very hot conditions. Tauranga scored 138/5 which would have been viewed by both sides as a competitive score.

We batted very well, in what was extremely hot conditions, but in the end probably left the charge a little too late. Tim O‟Sullivan 32* Luke Scott 19 and Sam Hickmott 17 all made valuable contributions. We finished on a total of 119/6. This batting did show how far we had come, when compared to the opening two games.

Result: Lost by 19 Runs.

So a solid tournament where a lot of progress was made, I am sure this will be seen when the boys get back to their school games. Also to all the boys well done on how you behaved, you represented Manawatu with pride. Thanks also to the Manawatu Green team, the support the teams gave each other was great to see. A most enjoyable week.

At the end of the tournament we gave out awards to:

Best Bowler: Keenan Scott Best Batter: Ryan Noble Best Fielder: Luke Scott Best Team Man: Braden Rowe

Keenan Scott was awarded the Most Developed Player for the Manawatu Under 11 White team and won a new set of Aero pads.
