This is of course a function of the wonderful support that the Association receives from staff, sponsors, clubs, players and the wider community. These are not easy times for sport in New Zealand and I gratefully acknowledge the support that we get from our funders and sponsors. The partnerships that have developed over the years are critical to our being able to deliver the programmes and competitions that we do and with the current environment they become even more critical. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing the relationship. To our staff Ian Sandbrook, Pods Hood and their support team, thanks once again for the substantial contribution you have made to the association. Ian has continued to grow in the Operations Manager role with the excellent support and guidance from Pods. The work that Pods does with New Zealand cricket also helps to put a context around what we seek to achieve locally and to ensure that what we are doing is well aligned with the national strategies. We continue to benefit from having one of the best staffing teams around and it is built not only on their outstanding operational and administrative skills but also their understanding and passion for the game. At the end of last season we reviewed the structure of the competitions and made some changes with the P3 competition becoming exclusively 1 day cricket and P4 becoming a T20 competition. We also added the T20 competition at the end of season to coincide with the prizegiving weekend. These initiatives were well received and the feedback from the clubs at the end of the season was positive. Club cricket remains at the heart of what we do and we will continually review the competition makeup to try to reflect the needs of our players. Manawatu had a very busy first class hosting season with 8 games played at Fitzherbert Park including the Central Stags and Hinds games and the England A vs NZ A one days games. The wicket played superbly and is a credit to Dave Fulton and his team at PNCC. The representative season impacts on the ability to play club cricket at Fitzherbert Park, but having the first class games played in the region is good for the game and a positive endorsement of our facilities and staff to deliver at this level. On the playing front 2008/09 was a strong season for Manawatu. Our Black Caps continued to perform at a national level and we provided plenty of players to the Stags and Hinds sides as well - 4 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + as CD A. The Manawatu women‟s team were the CD champions and the men‟s team won the Chapple Cup in an exciting final played in Nelson. All of the age group teams performed well with good representation in the CD age group sides and three players selected in the New Zealand U19 World Cup training squad. The school development programme continues to strengthen with participation numbers growing each year. Aligning clubs with schools for extra coaching has proved to be a positive initiative and hopefully both the schools and clubs will benefit in the long term as clubs are able to form relationships with players at an earlier stage and offer them a playing option post school. Financially the Association has had another successful year achieving a $9,121 operating surplus after depreciation, meaning in cash terms the surplus was $48,036. It has been a very deliberate strategy to re-build cash reserves when the economy has been strong as we foresee some financial constraints as sponsorship and gaming trust funding becomes more difficult to access. Finally a big thank you to fellow Board members for your support. I have enjoyed my first year as Chairman thanks to the excellent team that we have at the Governance level. Mark Cleaver Chairman - 5 - Annual Report and Financial Statement 2008/2009 MANAWATU CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC + Operation Manager’s Report A very pleasing aspect of this report over the last few years has been our ability to announce a successful season across the board for Manawatu Cricket, and I‟m proud to report that the 2008/9 season has continued this tradition. The hard work over many years from board level through to all staff and volunteers involved in the association means we can take great satisfaction in being the Premier District Association in New Zealand. There have been some outstanding results across many areas of our operations this year, and while it‟s great to take stock and pat ourselves on the back for another successful year, I hope everyone involved still maintains the drive and passion to keep moving us forward. We are operating in challenging times at many levels and I believe it‟s our collective experience, foresight and passion that we must concentrate on to ensure we continue to push the boundaries and maintain our status. Finance Manawatu Cricket has recorded another solid financial year. A cash surplus of $48,036 was recorded with a net profit after depreciation of $9,121. The operating surplus is in line with the MCA Board‟s target of consolidating the association‟s finances to allow us to effectively grow the game now and in the future. As you can see in the financial report, the Endeavour Community Trust was by far our greatest supporter this season and we can‟t overstate the many thanks we wish to convey to its trustees. Their support has allowed the MCA to plan and implement programmes with certainty and has no doubt been the driving force behind the significant improvements in our core functions over the last 4-5 years. This is none more evident than in the development of our game at grassroots level where their support has allowed us to improve the quality and volume of support to clubs and schools and in the development of our next generation of Black Caps. Staff The staffing make-up of the MCA was expanded this season primarily due to the increase in funding we were able to gain for our coaching and development programmes. Once again we have to thank the Endeavour Community Trust for their support and believing in our programmes to have significant community benefit. This season we were able to employ the following development staff: Scott Robson – Primary Schools Development Officer; Chad Law – Intermediate and Secondary Schools Development Officer; and Rachel Candy – Women‟s Cricket Coordinator.
