Update No.133 - 18 Nov 2017 – Rain Had Last Say

Lockie at Shore Road on Saturday

Great support for Lockie last Saturday. Here are two of the Parnell Junior teams that came to see our Black Cap speedster – many thanks to Peter Meredith (Parnell Munro – Grade 5s) and Andrew Barker for these photos. Lockie didn’t take a in the morning – ECB put up commendable resistance but Josh Fisher tidied up their innings to gain his first 5/for. Lockie had more successs in ECB’s 2nd innings taking 2/8 off 5 overs before rain intervened. ECB were 25/3 having been set a target of 251.

When rain stopped play, Lockie joined with the Water Boys in kicking & throwing a rugby ball – appropriate game considering the weather

Day 2. Started with great expectations – Lockie had been released by the Aces to play, crowds of youngsters, their games just finished, came to watch with their dads. ECB 129/6 – a collapse now could give us an outright and the Championship lead. No – whilst Lockie bowled with all the expected fire and Rav put the ball on the spot, the overnight batsmen played with skill and grit. On Day 1., Cole Briggs had gone to the crease at 64/4 and Harrison joined him at 110/6 and they saw out the Day. Now they dug in again and despite a torrid few overs from Lockie it was not till Josh was given the ball that Harrison was skittled – 155/7. Dean chipped in – Groenink caught and bowled, 167/8 – then, 2 runs later, finally, Briggs was caught behind off Josh. A very commendable innings – against a fired up attack, 105 runs were scored whilst he was at the wicket. And still the tail wagged. More incidents – the marquee blew down, then a swarm of bees caused havoc amongst the onlookers and no. 10, Jayden Quensell ducked into a short ball from Josh. Hit on the helmet first aid had to be administered to his cut ear. Then, mercifully, Josh bowled no. 11 to claim his first Premier 5 for. And Lockie remained wicketless!

1. Josh Fisher on the way to his first 5 for. 2. His Dad, John in action the week before, gremlins thwarted this photo being included in last week’s Update 133.

Jayden Quensell, ECB’s no. 10, struck by Josh and First Aid being administered by Nurse Gill Lane. Rod Schmulian has sinced advised that “Jayden had a few stitches on Saturday evening and has had a subsequent checkup with the doctor and it appears all is ok”

Bees swarming from the hives on Waitaramoa Reserve nearby & the onlookers hit the deck

Josh Fisher – 5/46, his maiden Premier 5 for, leading the Team from the field to applause from his teammates, Coach & the Waterboy

Quick runs to allow a declaration was the Skipper’s order:

And our batsmen responded -1. Ben Rainger – 64 off 71 balls. 2. Jesse Simpson hit 4s off the seat of his pants – 39 off 32 Earlier, Andy Lane had hit two 6s & two 4s in his 28 ball 34

Brad Rodden clobbered 34 off only 9 balls (4 x 6s!) and was not out (photos 1 & 2), the Skipper hit a 6 &, with 200 up, declared.

251 the target for ECB, 10 for Parnell:

All eyes on Lockie and he didn’t disappoint. The new ball whistled

Lockie had batsmen ducking & diving but it was at the other end that Rav snared the first wicket – Delport caught behind.

Then, at last, it was Lockie’s turn and, at 18, he had Raj caught by Dean and, immediately after, Langridge was LBW. 18/2 - a sniff of victory for Parnell– no, light drizzle set in, off the field they came and, though the rain lightened still more, that was the end, rain had the last say.

Postscript: A delightful consequence of Lockie’s release from the Aces – one Waterboy morphed into six! Thanks Auckland Cricket and the Selectors of the Aces!

MANAGER GEOFF MILLS REPORTS ON OUR PREMIER WOMEN: The Premier Women’s side played a representative stacked Cornwall side this Saturday and acquitted themselves pretty well. The weather held off long enough for a result with Parnell reduced to 10 players a quarter of the way into their fielding effort with Alisha Hyndman off with a damaged hand. Cornwall batted first scoring 339/5 in their 50 overs (Sarah Carnachan 141, ex Middlesex player Maia Bouchier 42 and Katy Perkins 58 no) with best economy coming from Shriya Naidu 7.1.32.0 (4.57) spinner Samantha Brake-Howard 10.0.52.1 (5.20) and Isabel Mills 4.0.20.0 (5.00). The bowling effort this week was a vast improvement with extras, wides in particular, substantially reduced from the previous week. Given 10 players and the quality of the opposition a pretty good bowling effort however the fielding was fairly average, conceding way too many runs inflating Cornwall’s score. Plenty of fielding work at training to come. Parnell went out to bat and were quickly in trouble, eventually succumbing in 37.2 overs for 101 all out. Only Shriya Naidu with 34 runs batted for any time and managed a notable score. Batting remains the area to work on for Parnell. However, this is Parnell’s first year back in a 3 year plan to build a competitive side. The team is gelling well and improving every week which is all that can be asked at this early stage.

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade – Presidents Cup - 2 Day Major C’ship

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING ON DAY 2.: Another cold and very windy Eastdale Reserve ground greeted us on day 2 of this fixture. Rain, although light, fell for most of the post lunch session, the umpires deciding that, although raining after the lunch break, it was deemed fit for play!!

Hamish Robinson and Joe Gray continued from the Day 1 score on 67 for 2 wickets. Hamish was out in the 3rd over of the day scoring a hard fought 33.

Joe Gray was joined by Callum Douglas and combined for 42 run partnership before Callum was run out (17 runs) by a direct hit in an unfortunate mix up with Joe. Score 110 for 4 Another 42 run partnership between Joe and Tom Talbot was brought to an end with Joe being adjudged LBW to the off spinner for a very well constructed 66 (sent in as night watchman) . Score 152 for 5 wickets

Sam Fastier joined Tom and soon got into his stride, particularly against the off spinner. Tom was out caught at short fine leg attempting a sweep shot. James Bevin joined Sam and after a positive start to his innings was undone by a ball the kept a little low. Score 176 for 6.

Sam continued well as batsmen came and went with Henry Glogau out caught and bowled by the off spinner. The left handed Alex Grimes showed some of his batting talent before he was caught behind pushing at one outside off. Will St John, batting in the unfamiliar position of 11, showed some of his batting class to suggest that he was far better (as we all know) than a No 11!! Will and Sam batted well together putting on a 30 run 10th wicket partnership. Sam was eventually out last for 39, showing solidarity in the middle order and producing another good innings for us.

We were all out for 232, 65 runs short of our target.

Thoughts: we needed to put together one substantial partnership to take the pressure off the run chase. Once again, we showed good signs of our potential in this division BUT, potential doesn’t win games!!

10 minutes before the afternoon tea break SNL went into bat for their 2nd Innings, two overs being bowled prior to the break. Straight after the tea interval James Bevin was brought on to bowl, picking up 2 wickets off his 3 overs and Joe Gray topped off his day with the wicket of first innings century maker Ben Hick, nicking him out for 9 runs.

With the rain coming down lightly but steadily we came off and waited some 20 minutes before SNL decided to agree to call and end to the days play.

SNL were 37 for the loss of 3 wickets when rain ended the game.

Women’s Premier Reserve Grade – T20

18 November – PARNELL vs. PAPATOETOE Thos Bloodworth Park 1. PARNELL 110/2 (20) Emma Irwin 82* (77) PAPATOETOE 97/5 (20) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 13 RUNS

MANAGER TOM BASSETT REPORTING: Parnell Prem Reserve Women chalked up their second win of the season against Papatoetoe on Saturday. Wonderfully privileged to get first use for the season on the Bloodworth grass pitch, Lexy Bassett won the toss and elected to bat first. Renee Macmillan and Emma Irwin got the innings off to a steady start, though the terraces were getting anxious when Parnell had scored only 30 odd off the first ten. However, only one wicket down and the ladies were well placed for a charge in the second ten. Renee was out in the ninth over, and after the mid-innings break Emma picked up the scoring rate. She was well-supported by firstly Petra Beuvink and then Alice McIlroy-Foster building a good total. The ladies ran especially well between the wickets with smart calling and putting pressure on the field, and with Petra and Alice feeding the strike to Emma who mixed careful defence with great shot selection to punish the loose deliveries. The innings closed on 110 for 2 after 20 overs, and Emma unbeaten on 82 off 77 balls: her innings included eight boundaries. Hers was a very well-constructed, composed and classy knock setting the team up well with a total to defend. Hopes were high for an early finish when Renee took a wicket with the first ball of the innings, and then Ella Lambert took a scalp also in the second over to reduce Papatoetoe to 5 for 2. However, a couple of dropped catches took the pressure off and Papatoetoe consolidated the innings. Lexy and Alice combined for the first of three run-outs to have Papatoetoe 30 for 3 in the eighth over before a 50 run partnership kept them within sight of the target. Some tight bowling and excellent commitment in the field made sure that they had difficulty keeping right up with the required run-rate. Two more run-outs, both featuring Petra who combined with Ella and then Renee kept the stranglehold on, and eventually Papatoetoe ran out of overs to finish on 97 for 5 - 13 runs short. A great all round effort by Parnell in the field. Seven bowlers used, and all bowled well – the pick being Renee and Petra who went for 10 runs and 12 runs off their four overs each. A feature of the innings was only five wide deliveries. Great to win the match – felt hard at times, but the Parnell ladies kept their composure and batted, bowled and fielded very well without succumbing to the pressure that was around them at various stages. An excellent result for the team. As mentioned we were very lucky to get first use of the Bloodworth grass pitch for the season. Our groundsman, Dave, had prepared a terrific strip with excellent and even grass covering, true bounce and a rock solid base – amazing for so early in the season to have such a good deck given the rain there has been. So a big shout-out to him for the job he has been doing to get the grounds and pitches sorted for the Club. Parnell Prem Reserve Women play Kumeu at Huapai this Saturday in the first round of the Limited Overs comp (35 overs match).

Auckland Women’s Under 18 Trial - Sunday, 19 Nov.

The Trial was held at Shore Road Reserve and congratulations to Parnell’s Jess Barket an Hetali Patel on being selected to take part.

1. Elliot’s wonderful spell of 6/24 paved the way for a much needed Outright. 2. Jubilation at his 1st wicket 3. Rudi who gave such great support

Gary Singh & Luke O’Toole batting for the Thirds CAPTAIN/COACH RUDI BISSCHOFF REPORTING ON DAY 2.: 3rds played the 2nd day against Grafton with 4 down. Our night watchman Mohan who did a terrific job last week was bowled first ball. It didn't get any better with wickets falling quickly while we were always behind the rate which put pressure on the batsmen to get the runs. We were bowled out for 132 in 47 overs. Not a good batting performance and the boys knew that. With all that anger, PCC was wanting to take that out on the Grafton Batsmen and Jaffe did exactly that by ripping into their and shocking Grafton so badly that they limped away completely deflated getting all out for only 58 in 19 overs. Jaffe ending with (9 - 2 - 24 - 6) including a great run out (after which he had to limp off the field). So brilliant performance from him. A great example from the Vice Captain of 3rds. PCC then needed 121 runs to get in 35 overs. With Grafton so deflated and taking ages between overs we eventually got there by our fired up batting order in 22.4 Overs with only 4 wickets down. Ormiston with 58 off 58 balls, L O'Toole 38 off 45 did all the hard work to get us close. Great comeback from the boys to turn a First Innings loss to an Outright win. We have a strong side this season, so the boys can see what can be done when we really want to win. So bring on AUCC next week. I am expecting a strong performance from all players.

th Men’s Senior 7 Grade 2 Day Championship Parnell Fourths

11 & 18 November – PARNELL FOURTHS vs SUBURBS NEW LYNN at Eastdale Reserve 5a.

(60) Cam Willis 1/27 (8), Elliot Humpries 2/49 (11) RESULT: MATCH DRAWN (1st Innings points to Suburbs NL) CAPTAIN JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: We arrived at Eastdale for day two of our match to find a new pitch had been laid (Yes a new pitch), further after having 12 men for week 1 we found ourselves down to 10 for day two with a late withdrawal and one player not turning up. We started the days in gentle showers and an early wicket to Humphries to have the home side 4 down for 70 we toiled for a further 27 over with no luck until Humphries was reintroduced to take his second, a second wicket for no runs came with the introduction of Al Hassan. We were unable to build much pressure which meant the home side spent the rest of the innings taking advantage of our loose bowling and scored at will to finish 96 runs ahead. We had a strong start to our second innings and at drinks we were 1 down for 56. Pooley and Lim continued this positive start continuing to attacking their bowlers but after the fall of a couple of wickets Ul Hassan entered with a busted finger and hit a run a ball 23. We concluded the game at 3 down for 136. It was our first loss of the season, however we have a very strong team and will bounce back next week in our next game. Special mention goes to Elliot & Richard Humphries, Elliot for taking 2 wickets and Richard for helping out in the field with us down a man.

Men’s One Day Grades Grade 1A Parnell “Fearless” 18 November – PARNELL FEARLESS vs WAITAKERE AIRFORCE at Whenuapai Air Base 1a. WAITAKERE AIR FORCE 322/5 (40) Abhi 3/37, Prabhjeet 1/27 PARNELL 326/7 (38) Randeep 154* (92), Gurpreet 50 (33), Abhi 31 RESULT: PARNELL FEARLESS WON BY 3 WICKETS

ABHISHEK BHALLA REPORTING FOR THE “FEARLESS” XI: After Winning Toss, we put Airforce in to Bat. Abhi and Randeep started proceedings and kept things tight in first 10overs giving away only 30runs and got 2 wickets. With the first bowling change, things started going downhill for us. We dropped 5 catches and Airforce took full advantage of this . They end up scoring 322 for 5. We did pulled it back in last 8 overs to restrict them to 322 as at one stage they were looking to score near to 400. Our batting unit has been struggling this season and morale was down after conceding over 300 and dropping catches. However looking at wicket and some strong words from skipper, we were determined to chase down total. Our Opener Maninder smashed 25runs in very 1st over. But then he mishit full toss that should have been out of park but ended up in keepers hand. We lost another 3 quick wickets in no time and were 49 for 4 inside 8th Over. Randeep and Abhi then put up partnership of 116runs and took the total to 165 in 25overs. Abhi got out for 31 and Randeep was joined by Gurpreet in middle. They both kept the high tempo and scored freely. Randeep brought his century and Gurpreet scored 50 in 33 Balls. When Gurpreet got out in 33rd over, score was 282 and Ankit came in and got run out in very next over. However Avtaar 27 in 18 Balls and Randeep 154* in 92 Balls saw us home with 2overs to spare.

Grade 1B Parnell “Kings” 18 November – PARNELL KINGS vs GRAFTON INDO KIWI INCREDIBLES at Cox’s Bay Reserve. PARNELL 93/10 Sundar 23, Aaron 15 GRAFTON 94/3 Arul 1/6, Roopesh 1/13 RESULT: PARNELL KINGS WON BY 4 WICKETS

CHAK ARUNACHALAM REPORTING FOR SKIPPER SOWNDAR We played against Grafton indo kiwi Incredibles last Saturday at Cox's bay reserve. We lost the toss and were sent into bat on a really windy and overcast conditions. Abrar and Chak opened the batting for Parnell and Abrar as usual had a good start scoring two boundaries in the first over. But conditions were difficult to bat and Abrar trying to attack was caught at mid off. A flurry of wickets then followed and Parnell were in a spot of bother. Aaron and Sundar played some wonderful shots and scored a few boundaries but could not stay for long and we were dismissed for 93. Chasing a small total Grafton came out strong but Aaron took an absolute stunner, catch of the season to dismiss the opener off the bowling of Arul at gully, runs were still hard to come but the total was never too big to defend and Grafton won comfortably handing Parnell Kings the first loss of the season.

Grade 2B Parnell “HAWKS” 18 November – PARNELL HAWKS vs CORNWALL PARK RANGERS at Shore Road Reserve 2a. PARNELL 169/10 (31) T Singh 63 CORNWALL PR 118/6 (27)

RESULT: MATCH ABANDONED, NO RESULT

Unfortunately no Report from the Parnell Hawks. Photographer Craig has sent me these photos below &, on checking the Auckland Cricket website, I have got the above scores. Watching from over at the Clubroom your Editor had believed that this game had gone the full distance – the players continuing in the very light drizzle till a decision was reached. However, it seems that it was called off late afternoon with Cornwall still 51 behind, and with just 4 wickets in hand. Rain having the final say.

18 November – PARNELL PRESSIES vs SRI LANKA LEGENDS at Eastdale Reserve 3a. SRI LANKA 212/7 (35) PARNELL 186/7 (35) Chris Laycock 100 rtd, Mark Smith 45* RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 52 RUNS

MARK SMITH REPORTS: A sorry story… but on a personal level, a great game. Match Report for PCC Presidents vs Sri Lanka CC Legends Following a victory the previous week there was an optimistic air amongst the team as the rain stayed North as we assembled knowing we had plenty of bowlers which, hopefully, would offset the lack of batters. This positive attitude was dented somewhat when the number of apologies was added up and the realisation that we only had 9 players. Biting the bullet, Skipper, Macculloch, elected to field first and, with our depth of bowlers, keep a lid on their total. Openers Robinson & O’Gorman kept the run rate low, with 2 early wickets to O’Gorman. Robbo unplayable as usual but “unlucky” with wickets. No LBW appeals were given. Second change Monteiro 0/16 (4 overs) and Smith 2/30 (6 overs) At this point a 10th man was positioned on the field ( Mike thanks) who stopped quite a few runs at cover. O’Gorman picked up another wicket 3/46 (6 overs) Good line and a full length limited Sri Lanka’s run rate with a final score of 212/7. Openers Laycock and Macca started well getting 24 off the first 5 overs, then the wheels fell off. Five batsmen came and went for 21 runs leaving Laycock potentially stranded with no partners. Macculloch was seen staring pleadingly at the dark clouds on the horizon, dropping copious amounts of water everywhere, except at Eastdale Reserve. Smith (yours truly) was upped the order to 8 based on availability, not ability, and stunned everybody, including himself, by scoring 45 runs NO. Laycock with a gammy leg, playing a disciplined mix of quality shots on a slow outfield, deservedly got his 100 retired. On his departure, O’Gormon entered the fray with 2 overs to go. Only 30 runs to get. Smith’s game plan at this point was to run O’Gorman out, allowing Laycock to come back on. O’Gormon promptly ran himself out, saving Smith the trouble. There ensued a heated discussion, between the Captains, as to why Laycock was coming out and not Mike, who had fielded a bit on the basis that he did not have to bat. The Laws were acknowledged, Mike came out to face 2 balls during the last over and PCC finished with 186/7. Another chapter in the rich history of playing Sri Lanka.

National Secondary School Boys' First XI Cup

It may come as a surprise to many Aucklanders to realise how unsuccessful Auckland secondary schools have been at this Tournament (formerly the Gillette Cup) since it’s inception in 1990. King’s College has won (or shared) the Cup 5 times in the 26 years, Saint Kentigern and Auckland Grammar only once each in all that time. Christchurch BHS dominates the winning list, 9 times overall and, most particularly, have dominated the past 10 years. But the real conclusion has to be that schools that compete against adults in men’s championships “produce the goods” far more regularly than those that just play school vs. school as in Wellington and Auckland. This year the Finals are to be held early in December -

Adaptive Cricket Day – Wed., 22 Nov.

Last season bad weather prevented us holding this community event but, thankfully, we have been able to resume this very worthwhile annual event.

Some 80+ special needs students from Sommerville Special School and Pakuranga College’s Pegasus Unit attended at Shore Road. Coaches were led by Joe Kinghorn-Gray. Helping Joe were Elliot Foster, Cam Willis and, on loan from Auckland Cricket, Alex Grimes plus magnificent assistance from 32 Saint Kentigern School Year 8 cricketers.

Huge thanks to the schools, especially Lionel Tapara at Sommerville, Diana Conochie of Pegasus Unit, and, of course, Duncan Grant from Saint Kentigern.

The following photos tell much of the storey – a very successful morning introducing these students to cricket, some for the very first time. After the cricketing drills, the groups had a debrief and then enjoyed the sausage sizzle provided by PCC – sizzlers barbacued to a turn by Life Member Steve Clerk who happened to look in to see what was happening and got “volunteered” immediately!

Again, many thanks to Sommerville Special School and the Pegasus Unit of Pakuranga College for participating and especially to Saint Kentigern School’s Year 8 lads who assisted wonderfully on the Day.
