MSC is increasingly recognized as the premier, undergraduate centre for peace and justice studies in Canada. To inquire further about MSC programs, go to www.mscollege.ca. Within the walls of our beautiful campus, new ideas and innovative thinking intersect with age-old wisdom and understanding. Rigorous academic studies, experiential learning, and community combine to form a foundation for students who want a life that will impact change. Grow in Faith We want your educational journey to lead not only to a career, but to a calling. While we freely welcome all students regardless of creed or background, we also challenge them to grapple with faith and life issues. Dare to let your life be shaped by the life of Jesus. Examine your faith, make it your own. Discover ways to make peace and justice a reality. See the world as a place where you can serve God and make a difference for others.

At CMU, students from many backgrounds have caught the spirit of the words of Menno Simons, a 16th century Christian from whom take their name. He said, “True evangelical faith cannot lie sleeping. It clothes the naked. It feeds the hungry. It comforts the sorrowful. It shelters the destitute. It serves those that harm it. It binds up that which is wounded. It has become all things to all people.” Challenge and grow your faith through weekly chapels and participation in fellowship groups. Campus cha- pel services gather our university community and open opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to wor- ship, share faith stories, listen to speakers from around the world, and exchange ideas and commitments. Nurturing spiritual life within a university community helps all of us become people who choose to make a difference in the world. A Biblical and Theological Studies core forms part of each CMU degree program. Engage in lively dialogue. Grow from integrated learning at its best.

2 3 Belong to a Community

4 At CMU, discover a community in which to build identity, value, and perspective–and one where all are respected and supported. Whether meeting friends at a Blazer’s game, gathering for worship, relaxing at the student-run café, engaging in hallway dialogue, or eating together in the dining hall, our students benefit from campus life. At CMU, you can’t help but be embraced within a diverse university family. Participate in campus events. Engage questions that matter to you. Be involved in student leadership. Initiate a new venture. The options are limitless, and the choices are yours.

Sustainable Community CMU faculty, staff, and students are committed to environmentally sound prac- tices. A dedicated cycling community (winners of the Commuter Challenge for the past three years), a student-run campus bike co-op, and an on-campus organic farm attest to CMU’s “green” campus initiatives.

Student Leadership Opportunities Students can join Student Council, organize and participate in numerous student-led initiatives, and support a variety of projects. Returning students can test their leadership by serving as Residence or Commuter Assistants.

Service Opportunities CMU students serve in the volunteer ranks of many local organizations. A Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) trip during reading week provides an additional, unique opportunity to learn and serve.

Vibrant Community Life CMU brings together residential and commuter students in the best possible way. Whether you live on campus or off, the CMU community is a place to make and expand a network of sig- nificant relationships. We know from experience that your involvement on campus builds leadership, opens friendships, and strengthens your academic experience and achievement.

Living in Residence Residence life opens unique opportunities to experience a supportive environment and develop lasting friendships. Each year, over 200 CMU students choose to live in residence. Explore CMU’s great housing options and find the right fit for you!

Commuting to CMU Our goal is to create a home on campus for our commuter students. CMU ser- vices and programs, including our commuter lounge where students can relax and prepare light meals, student events, and a dining hall meal plan, help our commuter students experience CMU community life.

Meal Plans CMU’s dining hall is a great meeting place for students throughout the day. Our staff provide a varied menu of healthy, home-style meals. Nightly snack time is a highlight. Students can purchase meal plans offering full weekly meals or select flexible meal options to suit individual needs. Special dietary requirements are met through a personalized approach.

CMU has gifted me with a deep sense of community and with life-long friendships. One of its greatest influences has been my professors, whose wisdom, compassion, and commitment inspire me. While CMU is a Mennonite university, it welcomes many like me from other traditions and creates such a positive and diverse atmosphere in which to learn. ‘‘ Brad Langendoen (Current Student), Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies ‘‘ 5 Pursue Athletic and Academic Excellence

CMU’s competitive athletic programs enhance a student-athlete’s university experience. We help our athletes pursue athletic excellence together with academic distinction, all while nurturing emotional, social, and spiritual strength and maturity. Over 70 percent of CMU’s varsity athletes maintain academic GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

Competitive Conference Play CMU is a member of the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Conference (MCAC) that in- cludes eight universities and colleges in Manitoba and Minnesota. Excellent league competition in women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, and basketball are supported by annual tournaments involving college and university teams in Western Canada, Ontario, and the United States.

Great Facilities The Loewen Athletic Centre is home for CMU volleyball and basketball games where an electric game-night atmosphere offers athletes an excit- ing playing experience. The varsity athletics field is located on campus and is the training site for the CMU soccer teams, while home games are played at the nearby BLAZERS ATHLETICS Winnipeg Soccer Complex. CMU’s fitness room, adjacent to the Loewen Athletic Centre, provides daily access to weights, exercise machines, and cardio equipment.

6 Studywith Outstanding Faculty

CMU courses are taught by outstanding and dedicated faculty. Professors and instructors are passionate about the subjects they teach, and they care about students. Their openness and accessibility are critical to student success at CMU.

Over 80 percent of full-time faculty members hold doctoral de- grees from universities across the continent. Many CMU faculty members have lived in other countries, bringing an international flavour and broadened perspectives to their teaching. Year after year, our students say they deeply value accessibility to interested, engaged, and caring faculty at CMU. If you appreciate an environment where students and professors get to know one another, then you are going to love CMU.

As a faculty member, I don’t really teach. I learn alongside fellow scholars, artists, healers, and activists. Together, we ask questions and try out solutions. I can’t imagine a better place to teach or to study. Dr. Sue Sorensen, PhD CMU Assistant Professor of English

For me, teaching is more than what happens in the classroom. It’s about entering into a relationship with students, through activities and conversing with them at school or in my home. My goal is to inspire them to live out what they have learned at CMU, and to leave the university stronger in their faith and equipped to meet life’s challenges. Dr. Sheila Klassen-Wiebe, PhD Associate Professor of New Testament

Membership in AUCC, combined with the appropriate provincial legislation, is a mark of quality higher education that is well recognized in Canada and abroad. AUCC membership gives confidence that a CMU degree will receive recognition at other universities and colleges.

English gives you tools to think, write, and interpret fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. The study of literature makes a unique contribution to the examined Christian life by teaching sensitivity to metaphor and narrative. Learn to appreciate the power of language.

History enables you to understand various movements and influences that, throughout time, have shaped and formed the world in which you live. Studying history provides context and perspective on the cultural, religious, political, economic, and individual forces and events that shape us today.

16 Learn. Think. Experience. CMU Practica

At CMU, because we value experiential learning for our students, every graduating student is re- quired to participate in a one-term practicum, completed during the school year, in the summer, or over the course of a year. They can be done locally, in North America, or around the world.

Through your practicum, you apply your classroom learning, broaden your world, challenge yourself academically, de- velop new skills and abilities, and test your career interests. It’s a great way to find out who you are and what you might do with your life. Your CMU practicum offers you an opportunity to deepen your academic learning through life experience and hands- on learning. Test work and vocational possibilities, and enrich your understanding as you and others bring your practi- cum experiences back to the classroom. Practicum assignments give you an opportunity to build workplace connections as you engage with an institution, agency, or business that takes a keen interest in offering practical experience for students. Maximize your learning opportunities. Experience learning in a way that affirms and challenges you in your career journey.

When I was doing my practicum in the rural village of Olepolos, in Kenya, I learned about Maasai culture by being invited into the kitchen each night, as the women cooked by lantern light. I learned about pastoralism by walking with my host brothers as they led their sheep. And I learned about social change by listening to the elders as they recounted local history. It is these experiences that show me how little my education was of my own doing, and how much it was given to me through unprecedented acts of generosity and hospitality.
