New appendices include a complete list of the music played at the regular concerts, giving the dates of performances. Ludwig van Beethoven (Born at Bonn, December 16 (?), 1770; died at Vienna, March 26, 1827) This overture was composed in 1810; it was published in 1811. The music to Goethe's play—overture, four entr'actes, two songs sung by Clarchen, "Clarchen's Death," "Melodrama," and "Triumph Symphony" (identical with the coda of the overture) for the end of the play, nine numbers in all—was performed for the first time with the tragedy at the Hofburg Theater, Vienna, May 24, 1810. Antonie Adamberger was the Clarchen. The overture is scored for two flutes (one interchangeable with piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, kettledrums and strings. What Beethoven thought of Goethe is well known. In 1809 he wrote to Breitkopf and Hartel : "Goethe and Schiller are my favorite poets, as also Ossian and Homer, the latter of whom, unfortunately, I can read only in translation." In 1811 he -wrote to Bettina von Brentano: "when you write to Goethe about me, select all words which will express to him my inmost reverence and admiration. Who can be sufficiently thankful for a great poet, the richest jewel of a nation? And now, no more, dear good B. I came back from a bacchanalian festival only at four 6'clock this morning, at which, indeed, I was forced to laugh a great deal, with the result that I have to weep almost as much to-day. Noisy joy often drives me powerfully back into myself." This letter was dated February 10. On April 12 (1811) he wrote to Goethe: "Your Excellence "The pressing opportunity of a friend of mine, one of your great admirers (as I also am), who is leaving here" (Vienna) "in a great hurry, gives me only a moment to offer my thanks for the long time I have known you (for I know you from the days of my childhood) —that is very little for so much. Bettina Brentano has assured me that you would receive me in a kindly, yes, indeed, friendly spirit. But how could I think of such a reception, seeing that I am only in a position to approach you with the deepest reverence, with an in- expressibly deep feeling for your noble creations. You will shortly receive from Leipsic through Breitkopf and Hartel the music to 'Egmont,' this glorious 'Egmont,' with which I, with the same warmth with which I read it, was again through you impressed by it, and set it to music. I should much like to know your opinion of it ; even blame will be profitable for me and for my art, and will be as willingly received as the greatest praise. LOESER'S Fulton at Bond, Brooklyn TRiangle 5-8100 Goethe answered this letter at Carlsbad on June 25, 1811:—- "Your friendly letter, highly esteemed sir, I "received to my great pleasure through Herr von Oliva. I am most thankful to you for the opinions expressed therein, and I assure you that I can honestly reciprocate them, for I have never heard one of your great works performed by skilful artists and amateurs without wishing that I could for once admire you at the pianoforte, and take delight in your extraordinary talent. The good Bettina Brentano really de- serves the sympathy you have shown her. She speaks of you with rapture and the liveliest affection, and counts the hours she spent with you as the happiest of her life. The 'Egmont' music I shall probably find when I return home, and I thank you in advance—for I have already heard it spoken of in high terms by several persons, and I think I shall be able to give it this winter at our theatre, accompanied by the music in question ; by this means I hope to prepare great enjoyment both for myself and for your numerous admirers in our parts.

Information Booklet Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert 2019 INFORMATION BOOKLET VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA NEW YEAR’S CONCERT 2019 01.01.2019 LIVE FROM THE WIENER MUSIKVEREIN VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR: CHRISTIAN THIELEMANN 1 Information Booklet Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert 2019 PRESS RELEASE Year after year, the New Year’s Concert allows the Vienna Philharmonic to present itself as Austria's most important musical ambassador. Their traditional greeting to the world is born of a spirit of hope, friendship and peace. January 1st 2019 marks 60 years that ORF will have been accompanying this "Concert of Concerts" with its television cameras. In fact, the programme is now broadcasted in almost 100 countries worldwide. A historical journey through time documenting the extent to which the broadcast has changed over the years, "Prelude to the New Year's Concert", will be shown at 10:40 on ORF2. Once again there will be a New Year’s Concert newcomer: German conductor Christian Thielemann. His engagement at the New Year’s Concert has long been anticipated by the music world, having been connected musically to the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000 and having often conducted at the Vienna State Opera. As chief conductor of the Sächsischen Staatskapelle Orchestra, Christian Thielemann has performed many concerts in Austria, not least in Salzburg, where he has been artistic director of the Easter Festival since 2013. ’Kapellmeister’ Thielemann (who prefers not to be referred to as Maestro) is very familiar with the music of the Strauss dynasty and the world of operetta. Nevertheless, his interpretation of this music especially at the New Year’s Concert represents a new level of achievement for him.

  • 4 ` Cicero' on the (Theatre) Stage
4 CI` CERO' ON THE(THEATRE) STAGE The earliest dramas in which ‘Cicero’ appears on stage as acharacter date from the last quarter of the sixteenth century: apiece in France, one in Germany and (at least) three in Britain were produced in fairly quick succession. In all of these ‘Cicero’ is not the protagonist after whom the plays are named; instead, he is a more or less important figure involved in the dramatic action. 4.1 Robert Garnier, Corne´ lie (1574) Context Robert Garnier ( c. 1545–1590) studied law and did legal work in Paris before becoming amagistrate in his native district of Maine (a region in France) and later amember of the Grand Conseil du Royaume in Paris. From his student days onwards Garnier wrote literary works, starting with lyric and later turning to dramatic poetry.Heisnow regarded as one of the most significant French dramatists of the sixteenth century. The majority of Garnier’splays dramatize stories from the ancient world: Porcie (1568), Corne´ lie (1574), Hippolyte (1574), Marc-Antoine (1578), La Troade (1579) and Antigone (1580). At the same time the themes have contemporary resonance: the pieces share an emphasis on civil war,are characterized by arepublican outlook and were published during the turbulent period of the French Wars of Religion.1 As for their form, Garnier’splays feature little dramatic action and rather consist of an alternation of rhetorically developed speeches and choruses; they are based on the model of Seneca’sLatin tragedies.2 28 R EVIVING C ICEROIN D RAMA Corne´ lie was first performed in 1573; it was first published in 1574 and then included in an edition of Garnier’stragedies in 1585.
