Jesus’ opponents accuse him of demonic possession, they insinuate that he is doing the work of evil in the world. Evil, as we know, is real and exists. We see it when people die of starvation, disease, or homelessness because of human indifference. We witness evil when multiple mass shootings take place in our high schools, movie theatres, Saturday, June 9 –Vigil of the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time concert venues, and churches. 4:00 p.m. Mass at St. Philip – Francis Re (Dee Domer) Jesus’ anger is clear and he preaches probably 5:30 p.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Joanne Widrig one of his harshest statements in this passage from (Sue Dondelewski) Mark’s Gospel. The critics of Jesus claim that His good Sunday, June 10 – The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time works – exorcism, healings, forgiveness, must have evil Readings: 89: Gn 3:9-15/Ps 130:1-8/2 Cor 4:13–5:1/ intent or be the work of the devil. Jesus rebukes them Mk 3:20-35 sharply, saying they have committed an unforgiveable 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Philip – Susan Driskoll sin, they have sinned “against the Holy Spirit.” This (Brad & Marcia Walters) unforgiveable sin is that they refuse to recognize the 11:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – For the People of grace of God at work when He (Jesus) gives life, heals, Holy Spirit and St. Philip Parishes and frees people from evil. Those who attacked Jesus Monday, June 11 – St. , Apostle claimed that His good works must surely be the work of Readings: 580: Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3/Ps 98:1-6/ a dark and sinister force. 359: Mt 5:1-12 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Philip – Therese Helbling Evil in the world baffles us, confuses us, and makes (Helbling Family) us fearful. We wonder how God, if he is all powerful, allows or permits evil to happen or even exist. So many Tuesday, June 12 Readings: 360: 1 Kgs 17:7-16/Ps 4:2-5, 7-8/Mt 5:13-16 events and actions of people (actions which are evil) 8:15 a.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Barbara Ross leave us questioning why we believe in the power of (Parish Gift Mass) Good (and God) at all. This is the issue that makes more Wednesday, June 13 – St. than a few people walk away from faith and religion Readings: 361: 1 Kgs 18:20-39/Ps 16:1-2, 4-5, 8, 11/Mt 5:17-19 altogether: How can evil exist at all if there is a good and 8:15 a.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Cathy Woodruff merciful God? (Al Roehrenbeck) That is the ultimate power of evil: enticing people Thursday, June 14 to walk away from acknowledging it, recognizing it, and Readings: 362: 1 Kgs 18:41-46/Ps 65:10-13/Mt 5:20-26 combating it. We should know that Jesus Christ Himself 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Philip – William English was the victim of evil – men with evil intent, angry with His (Helbling Family) ministry and person – deliberately chose to execute Him. Friday, June 15 Jesus was not indifferent in the face of evil – neither should Readings: 363: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16/Ps 27:7-9c, 13-14/ we be. The struggle against the use of human freedom for Mt 5:27-32 evil purpose has existed since the days of . 8:15 a.m. Mass at Holy Spirit – Thomas Geary We must not remain indifferent. Evil triumphs when good (Family) people grow cold, uncaring, indifferent. Saturday, June 16 – Vigil of the Eleventh Sunday in Have a Good Week! Ordinary Time 4:00 p.m. Mass at St. Philip – Fr.
