. . . . . FROM YOUR PASTOR

From Francis: "Prayer is a means to communicate with and listen to God. In this spirit, I have welcomed all to prayer, fasting, and works of charity...in asking the Lord to save humanity from the pandemic, to enlighten scientists, and to heal the sick. May the Lord bless each one of you, and always protect you from every evil.” How do Corporal Works of Mercy allow us to Communicate With God? And how does Redemptive Suffering allow us to Listen To God? Prayer lifts our Minds and Hearts to God. It is the Mind that engineers the technical response to the Coronavirus. It is the Heart that moves us to Self-Giving and Service to those impacted by the Pandemic. There are individuals on both sides of this equation. Pope Francis has enumerated them in his Plenary Indul- gence and the Intentions of his Daily Mass. We find Redemptive Suffering in those Called Home by the Virus, in the Doctors and Nurses and First Respond- ers who are caring for those in need 24/7 often beyond human physical limits and in the most tragic and heart- breaking of circumstances, and in the Families Who Mourn the Loss of Loved Ones with whom they might not have shared their last moments or may not even know the location of their grave. These Sacrifices of LIFE, TALENT, and LOVE move our Minds to a supernatural SACRIFICE FOR OTHERS. We find Corporal Works of Mercy in the Community Volunteers at Shelters and Soup/Sandwich Lines and Food Pantries, in the Providers of Goods and Funds for these outreach activities, in the Homebound Who Pray these ministries forward, and in Those Who Fast from Food or Social Media or Material Goods in Reparation for those who Harm Rather Than Help. These Acts of PRAYER, FASTING, and WORKS OF CHARITY move our Hearts to Self-Giving Service...To Jesus Christ. LISTENING TO GOD THROUGH REDEMPTIVE SUFFERING AND CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY UNITE US AS FAMILY, AS COMMUNITY, AND AS CHURCH IN A SOLIDARITY WITH SUFFERING HUMANITY THAT TRANSCENDS RACE, CREED, GENDER, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN. Sisters and Brothers in Christ Give and Serve in his Name -- A NAME THAT IS THE GREATEST DEFENSE AGAINST EVERY EVIL. Jesus asks us -- REMAIN IN MY LOVE. Jesus tells us -- LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I LOVE YOU. Jesus promises us -- SO THAT WHATEVER YOU ASK THE FATHER IN MY NAME HE MAY GIVE YOU. Living these WORDS OF JESUS ALLOW US TO LISTEN TO GOD since He and the Father are ONE. In God we find OUR REFUGE AND OUR STRENGTH...as we seek security, stability, health, and prosperity in the days ahead. The Spiritual Masters tell us that PRAYER comes from the secret, interior place of the HEART -- the Core of our Spiritual Life. LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART...ACT THROUGH YOUR HEART...as a servant for GOD in service to oth- ers...AS HE EMBRACES ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE PANDEMIC IN HIS UNFATHOMABLE LOVE. +May God Bless You and Keep You+

St. Vincent De Paul, Pray For Us

Seventh Sunday of Easter/Ascension I almost never get to talk about today’s gospel reading. I’m so glad I finally have the chance to tell you the greatest news you’ve ever heard. Here it is: YOU ARE ALREADY IN HEAVEN. Now, at this moment in history that may seem like very bad news indeed, as in Seriously? Heaven is being stuck in the house all day and night, terrified of a horrible virus? If this is heaven, what’s hell? Well, you make a point. It doesn’t seem like heaven, except for the most important fact about your life: you know Jesus. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ (Jn. 17:3). if you were an infant on the day of your baptism, your Godparents answered those all-important questions for you: Do you believe in God? Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his Son? They answered YES for you, and your life’s task has been, with all your heart, to an- swer YES on your own. It’s in that YES that eternal life begins right here on earth. That YES lifts the believers up into that realm that holds them, through sickness, and loss, and grief, and even pandemics. I can do all things in Christ, who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13), says the one whose YES has taken him or her into eternal life right here on earth. The one who knows Jesus already has a taste of heaven. That does not mean that we are immune from the terrors of this life. It means that holding fast to Jesus anchors us to Him whose comfort and healing is a foretaste of the next.
