Church of the Holy Trinity May 20, 2018 A parish open to all, grounded in prayer and a messenger of the Gospel Thoughts of the Pastor In the first story of creation in the Book of Genesis, we are told: In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth —and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty ruach [wind, breath or spirit] sweeping over the waters —Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light. In the second story of creation, we are told: Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the ruach [wind, breath or spirit] of life, and the man became a living being. The Hebrew word, ruach , means wind, breath and/or spirit. It is a driving, creative and animating force. St. Luke draws upon the images in Genesis as he describes the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. The Spirit is that driving, creative and animating force that enabled the 12 to burst out of the upper room and to begin to proclaim, first to the Jews gathered in Jerusalem from many parts of the world and then to the whole world, that Jesus Christ is Lord. This is the same Spirit of which St. Paul speaks in the second reading from First Corinthians that comes to each of us in different ways as different gifts. This Sprit is what makes us the Body of Christ and His presence in the world. This same Spirit enables us today to be the witnesses of Christ. Father Tom Living and Giving in Christ: The Vocations Office is one of the things that the Living and Giving in Christ Appeal supports. We are blessed to have Father Steve Titus, the Vocations Director, here in residence at Holy Trinity, although he spends most of his time traveling through the Diocese and visiting our seminarians. The Vocations Office provides support to the parish to encourage vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life. Father Steve also helps those discerning vocations and for young men interested in the priesthood to enroll in the seminary. The Living and Giving in Christ Appeal provides the infrastructure behind our Parish like the power grid or the water and sewage system provides the infrastructure behind our homes. The Parish is a part of the Diocese, which is the Church of Christ in the State of Wyoming. The Diocese is the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Our Parish is a part of this larger reality Some dioceses support themselves through an income tax on parish income and also do appeals. Here in the Diocese of Cheyenne, we do the Living and Giving in Christ Appeal with a mandatory goal, so that if donations do not achieve the goal, the parish makes up the difference from its regular income. As a stewardship diocese and parish, the tithe is recommended where 5% goes to the parish, 1% to the Living and Giving in Christ Appeal, and 4% goes to second collections and other charities like the Animal Shelter or Cancer Fund. The goal is based upon this model, so it is basically 20% of offering income. Our goal for 2018 is $111,557. So far, we have pledged $73,487. We want our gifts to be “first fruits,” the first of what we have been blessed, and to be planned. If we c annot do a full 10% as mentioned above, then the ratio 5:1:4 provides a good giving model.
