Congratulations to our newly confirmed! They now have all the spiritual tools to witness fully to Jesus Christ as their Lord! The Sacrament of Confirmation fully initiates a Catholic Christian into the and “completes the grace of Baptism by a special outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church glossary). In fact, “…the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For ‘by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.’” (CCC 1285). The Holy Spirit makes a “mark” on the soul of the one confirmed, which happens also at Baptism and with men who receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders (deacon, priest, bishop). The Catechism points out in Scripture how Jesus instituted this sacrament: “From that time on the apostles, in fulfillment of Christ’s will, imparted to the newly baptized by the laying on of hands the gift of the Spirit that completes the grace of Baptism. For this reason in the Letter to the Hebrews the doctrine concerning Baptism and the laying on of hands is listed among the first elements of Christian instruction. The imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church.” (CCC 1288). As many are aware, our current tenant in the school building was interested in renting 9 small offices on the second floor of the Parish Center as administrative offices for their organization. We had been working on a contract for the past couple months and the Archdiocese Properties Office had written up a draft contract for my and our tenant’s review. Unfortunately, I was informed by our realtor recently that our tenant is no longer going to pursue renting the offices because she had realized the second floor would not be accessible for any employees she might have in the future, who have disabilities. Our realtor will be looking for tenants once again for those 9 offices. He will look for a few tenants or for one tenant to rent them all. Although I was disappointed, I realized this must be Jesus’ will and He has another plan that we simply do not know yet! Lastly, I hope to see you all at the St. Patrick & St. Joseph Dinner Celebration next Sunday, March 15th from Noon to 3pm! Take part in the basket raffle and the live auction, but most importantly, spend time in fellowship with each other. I will see you there! God bless! In Christ through Mary, Fr. Musings From Mary Kay Dear Ones, Today’s Gospel (Matthew 17:19) tells of the As a young adult, Julia was freed by the Transfiguration when Jesus took Peter, James and Legislature and the Emancipation Proclamation in John up a high mountain where his “face shone like the 1863. UNLEASHING THE GOSPEL AT ST. BASIL THE GREAT

Charles (85) and Patricia (83) Wummel are amazing people. They have been members of St. Basil the Great Parish on and off since 1957. They raised their five children here. At one point, in 2001, they moved up north to Lovell after retirement. They enjoyed a life of leisure until 2015 when they returned to Macomb County and settled in St. Clair Shores. “But where should we go to church?”, they wondered. After attending several churches around the area, they came to St. Basil again. They ran into old friends and felt immediately at home. They love it here and have no intention of leaving. So why do I find them so amazing? Is it because they are still in love after years? Still taking long road trips (to Chicago) without a care in the world? Is it because they are active in the lives of their twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren? These are admirable achievements, indeed. But no, what I find amazing is the passion, courage and strength of conviction they show in the face of today’s greatest evil: abortion. What is fueling this passion? Well, for the Wummels, abortion is a nonnegotiable. As lifelong Catholics, they are fully aware that life is a gift from God and each child is made in his image. To kill innocent babies is an abomination to God. And they find it outrageous that killing babies right up until the point of birth and possibly after birth is now optional! The Wummels have remarked “Next, they will come for us seniors.” Are they really far from the truth? Charles’ passion is also fueled by his own sad story of a family member who believed the lie of abortion being acceptable in some cases. It didn’t end well for her. Charles still talks about the pain. Chuck and Pat have faithfully attended every vigil Fr. Eric has had at the Eastland Woman’s Clinic. They have helped plan the big vigil event we had this past fall with “God’s Precious Infants”. How easy do you think has been for them at 80 plus to stand in quiet protest through snow, rain or sunshine? To walk distances from clinic to clinic in procession with much younger people? It’s not easy, but they do it. Charles said he is working on his halo! Even though Chuck and Pat admit they were not “joiners” before this, when the vigil announcement came a few years back, they answered the call. Now they feel encouraged when they get feedback from the sidewalk councilors that a woman has changed her mind because people were outside the clinic praying. Or when there is a high turnout of people to pray with them! They have grown more and more aware of all that is happening in the fight for “Life”. The big goal now is to make it to the March for Life in Washington DC! At the same time, their faith and zeal have grown. They are hungry to know more about their faith. Pat is becoming quite computer savvy as she has learned to navigate the Formed.org programs offered through St. Basil. They have gone through the entire Symbolon Program on their own. They said many questions they had about their faith have been answered through Formed.org. Pat even found a new release movie about Divine Mercy and shared it with others. Others from St. Basil accompanied them since they have all become friends! There are so many blessings and benefits to being a “joiner” in the events and programs offered at St. Basil. Please consider joining Chuck, Pat and other parishioners this Lent as they go out for four consecutive Saturdays at 9 am to 10 am to do God’s work for the innocent. The only voice they have is ours. It is a blessing and a privilege. And, you make new friends, too! Page 6 St. Basil Bulletin
