  • French Stewardship of Jazz: the Case of France Musique and France Culture
ABSTRACT Title: FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE Roscoe Seldon Suddarth, Master of Arts, 2008 Directed By: Richard G. King, Associate Professor, Musicology, School of Music The French treat jazz as “high art,” as their state radio stations France Musique and France Culture demonstrate. Jazz came to France in World War I with the US army, and became fashionable in the 1920s—treated as exotic African- American folklore. However, when France developed its own jazz players, notably Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, jazz became accepted as a universal art. Two well-born Frenchmen, Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay, embraced jazz and propagated it through the Hot Club de France. After World War II, several highly educated commentators insured that jazz was taken seriously. French radio jazz gradually acquired the support of the French government. This thesis describes the major jazz programs of France Musique and France Culture, particularly the daily programs of Alain Gerber and Arnaud Merlin, and demonstrates how these programs display connoisseurship, erudition, thoroughness, critical insight, and dedication. France takes its “stewardship” of jazz seriously. FRENCH STEWARDSHIP OF JAZZ: THE CASE OF FRANCE MUSIQUE AND FRANCE CULTURE By Roscoe Seldon Suddarth Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts 2008 Advisory Committee: Associate Professor Richard King, Musicology Division, Chair Professor Robert Gibson, Director of the School of Music Professor Christopher Vadala, Director, Jazz Studies Program © Copyright by Roscoe Seldon Suddarth 2008 Foreword This thesis is the result of many years of listening to the jazz broadcasts of France Musique, the French national classical music station, and, to a lesser extent, France Culture, the national station for literary, historical, and artistic programs.

Jazz Collection: Lauren Newton (W) Samstag, 13. The supreme aim of CRISS CROSS is to widen the spectre of extension of contemporary jazz. • NEW CD: Georg Breinschmid – „Wien Bleibt Krk“
R e v i e w s - Page 1 of 17 CD „Wien bleibt Krk“ – Georg Breinschmid Released in March 2008 on Zappel Music. NEW CD: Georg Breinschmid – „Wien bleibt Krk “ Working in a recording studio is not always as fun as a lot of people would like to think. In this case, it was a lovely act of fate to be the private concert audience listening to top-notch musicians for hours on end, and getting paid for it. We know him from the Vienna Philharmonic, from the Vienna Art Orchestra and in connection with many other roles. A musician characterised by virtuosity, enthusiasm and terrific wit: The double bass player Georg Breinschmid also demonstrates his talent as a producer with his new CD “Wien bleibt Krk”. His works presented here are convincing in a burlesque, charming, subtle yet coarse, nonchalant, smart, traditional (and) sly way, with mellow tonality and at the same time blatant self-mockery. Whether vocal or instrumental, you never know if perhaps in the next moment Johann Strauss II will turn the corner with an alien attack dog. This CD brings together a selected cast of exceptional artists, including Beni Schmid, Stian Carstensen and Thomas Gansch. For Breinschmid and his fellow musicians, there’s not much separating romantic sounds from those of a berserk madhouse choir. Intelligent tricks and turns hide behind harmless gestures scattered here and there. But even in his more serious songs, the accomplished double bass player’s compositions are completely convincing. Those whose eyes remain dry during the duet “Lost Daughters” – interpreted bittersweetly by Tini Kainrath and Willi Resetarits – would be better off signing on with the French Foreign Legion.

  • Uri Caine's Mahler Project As Intertraditional Musical Translation
FOREIGNIZING MAHLER: URI CAINE’S MAHLER PROJECT AS INTERTRADITIONAL MUSICAL TRANSLATION J. Cole Ritchie Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2015 APPROVED: Margaret Notley, Major Professor John Murphy, Committee Member Bernardo Illari, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Committee Member Frank Heidlberger, Chair of the Department of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology James C. Scott, Dean of College of Music Costas Tsatsoulis, Interim Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Ritchie, J. Cole. Foreignizing Mahler: Uri Caine’s Mahler Project as Intertraditional Musical Translation. Doctor of Philosophy (Musicology), August 2015, 233 pp., 12 tables, 2 figures, 22 musical examples, references, 155 titles. The customary way to create jazz arrangements of the Western classical canon— informally called swingin’-the-classics—adapts the original composition to jazz conventions. Uri Caine (b.1956) has devised an alternative approach, most notably in his work with compositions by Gustav Mahler. He refracts Mahler’s compositions through an eclectic array of musical performance styles while also eschewing the use of traditional jazz structures in favor of stricter adherence to formal ideas in the original score than is usual in a jazz arrangement. These elements and the manner in which Caine incorporates them in his Mahler arrangements closely parallel the practices of a translator who chooses to create a “foreignizing” literary translation. The 19th-century philosopher and translation theorist Friedrich Schleiermacher explained that in a foreignizing translation “the translator leaves the writer alone as much as possible and moves the reader toward the writer.” Foreignizing translations accentuate the otherness of the original work, approximating the foreign text’s form and syntax in the receiving language and using an uncommon, heterogeneous vocabulary.
