Music Tells the Story: Creating Original Scores and Soundtracks for Film Wednesday 8 October, 10:30-12:30, BFI Southbank

The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands (Dir Walter Summers/UK 1927)

How do music and sound contribute to the overall meaning of a film, as commentary or integrated into a sound world? What challenges are faced by commissioners, composers, directors and music supervisors in the creation of a new score? In this interactive panel event, industry experts focus on sound and silent film to explore the creative and practical decisions to be made by individual artists and collaborators working towards a final vision.

Simon Dobson – Composer Simon was born in Cornwall and studied composition at Launceston College under Robert Strike before being awarded a scholarship to study composition under Timothy Salter at the Royal College of Music in . He is a winner of the Brass Section, Cornwall Young Composer Competition (1997), winner of the European Composers' Competition, Brussels, Belgium (2002) and 4BarsRest Newcomer of the Year (2002). In 2009 he was shortlisted for a British Composer Award in the Wind Band or Brass Band category for his work Penlee and in 2012 he won in this category for his piece A Symphony of Colours. Simon has played trumpet for various funk/soul/jazz and hip hop bands, including The King Blues’ album ‘Punk & Poetry’, and performs as part of 'The Badcore Horns', a session horns for hire collective of

which he is a founding member. This year sees the release of his first solo album 'Euneirophrenia’ and the premier of his first feature length film soundtrack commissioned by the BFI, The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands. @Peacekidxxx

Hannah Partington – BFI Project Manager for The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands Hannah is a musician and BFI Research Manager.

Maggie Rodford – Music Supervisor Maggie studied music, playing piano and 'cello and singing in choirs including the BBC Chorus. She trained as a music engineer and worked at both the BBC and EMI. She is now Managing Director of the Air-Edel Group, a London and LA-based music representation, production and publishing company which works with composers, arrangers, music editors and music supervisors worldwide. She was also active for many years as a Director of the Performing Rights Society. Maggie has been the music supervisor on many feature films and TV series, working closely with the production team on all aspects of source music, on set playback and score. Her credits as music producer, co-ordinator and or supervisor on projects include Gambit (Dir Michael Hoffman/UK 2012) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Dir /UK 2014) as well as The Boxtrolls, Belle, Anna Karenina, Brave, Cabin in the Woods, Thor, Jane Eyre, My Week with Marilyn, W.E., The King's Speech, The First Grader, Atonement, Gosford Park, Bridget Jones' Diary, Beyond the Sea, Pride & Prejudice, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Miss Potter and Donnie Brasco. @maggie_rodford

Tom Hutchinson - Event facilitator Tom is a musician, teacher and arts project co-ordinator. He trained as a clarinettist, initially at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and he plays with ensembles across the UK. He regularly writes and speaks about the role of classical music, and has interviewed many of the world’s leading musicians including Mitsuko Uchida, Evelyn Glennie and Sir Mark Elder. He develops and co- ordinates creative projects for the Royal Philharmonic Society and has worked with over eighty arts organisations across the UK: in 2007-10 he co-ordinated Hear Here! – a huge project exploring listening, presented by the RPS, Classic FM and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Much of his work develops links between classical music and other art forms particularly with literature, dance, film and the visual arts and he also active in developing greater access to the arts for the deaf community. @ArtsHutch
