Rosillo 1 Rosillo, Tatiana Professor Nelson Film and Other Media Final Paper 2 May 2018 A Stiletto in the Hand Is Worth a Gun in the Purse Mainstream American action films require the audience to empathize with a protagonist as he (and very seldom she) is put through a series of intense fight sequences and tension-filled personal exchanges to complete any manner of high stakes mission. The spy film is an exemplary subset of this genre, employing the formula in an interesting, if somewhat statist, romp through action genre conventions. Overwhelmingly, men have been the main creators, consumers, and centers of spy narratives. These narratives tend to leave women out on the margins, restricting female characters and excluding female creators and consumers. Recently, there has been a shift towards women playing larger roles and even leading spy films. However, this progress remains hampered by the lack of opportunities afforded to female directors and female driven scripts. The film Atomic Blonde (2017) exhibits this complex step in the move towards female- centric spy films with Charlize Theron as the titular blonde, Lorraine Broughton, with male director David Leitch at the helm. What warrants critical attention in Rosillo 2 Atomic Blonde are the modes of weaponized femininity constructed by Lorraine in her wardrobe and mannerisms; Lorraine cultivates an impenetrable, unflappable traditionally feminine aesthetic and uses this aesthetic as armor, weapon, and trap. Using these modes of weaponized femininity, the film examines the constructed nature of femininity and weaponized femininity’s interventions in those expectations. In order to understand the progress Atomic Blonde is attempting, one must examine the pre-established conventions of spy genres with regards to male and female roles. -

World War II Meets French 331: Using Au revoir les enfants to Discuss Religion, Ethics, and Values _________________________________ Laura Dennis-Bay University of the Cumberlands Williamsburg, Kentucky Abstract This paper examines the treatment of religious and ethical themes in relation to the holocaust in Louis Malle’s film Au revoir les enfants, and suggests ways in which the film can enable discussion of religion, ethics and values in the French classroom.The film raises issues of philosophical and spiritual significance as it forces the viewer to grapple with some of the most atrocious events in human history. “Can we watch a movie?” Many college foreign language profes- sors hear all too often some variation of this refrain. Whatever the response, it seems that more often than not, the request is followed by something like “my high school teacher let us watch Beauty and the Beast in French.” Already suspecting, perhaps fearing the answer, the instructor might re- spond “Oh, the beautiful black and white film by Surrealist director and poet Jean Cocteau?” The answer, too many times, is a perplexed “No, I mean the Disney cartoon,” at which point it’s time to move on. This is not to argue against the use of film in the classroom. In fact, in the past few years I have added an increasing number of films at the Intermediate level and beyond, and even developed an entire course on film adaptations of literary works. Not only do films in the target language en- courage development of linguistic skills, particularly listening, in some cases they also serve as valuable cultural and historical artifacts. -

The film BlacKkKlansman by Spike Lee is a work that challenges not only American history but also the perspectives of black and white people in contemporary society. Discussing the white and black characters and the social criticism in the movie with students in the English classroom may encourage them to be more open-minded and aware of global political and social issues.
