Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Every generation has its hero. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833) was a very gifted statesman, a social reformer, a philanthropist and an evangelical Christian. As well as working to bring about the end of the slave trade, and then to abolish slavery itself, he was concerned about mistreatment of animals (he was a founder member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA), education, the social impact of heavy gin drinking, and the need for missionaries in various parts of the world, including India and Africa (he was a founder of the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society). Amazing Grace is the most honored and recorded song of all time. Amazon.com lists some 2000 currently available recordings of Amazing Grace. Nothing else comes remotely close. It crosses all lines—from classical to country, from rock to traditional folk. It is permanently ingrained in the culture. No other song has enjoyed such diverse rendering. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807, when Parliament passed a bill to abolish the slave trade. (The film’s release is a way of marking the bicentennial of that event.) Some years later, just three days before Wilberforce’s death, slavery itself was completely abolished in Britain. This transcript has been edited by the interviewee and thus differs in places from the recording. CB: How did you first become interested in theatre? FG: I suppose through [act]ing at school, but in terms of any serious theatre going I suppose it goes back to the late 1940’s... interestingly enough, when I re-looked at the [programmes] that I have got, the first play that I saw [in] the West End was most unusual for the late 1940’s, it was a play called Anna Lucasta,an American play; what was unusual for the 1940s was that it was an all black cast. CB: Really… FG: And it was about a prostitute and my parents took me [laughs] and I think they must have been slightly worried because I was fourteen at the time and it was one of my first experiences. But that was not typical of the first sort of phase of my theatre-going between that moment in 1949 and about 1951 I suppose and [after where] something dramatic begins to happen, I think. -

The VW’s Shakespeare party this year marked Shakespeare’s 452nd birthday as well as the 400th anniversary of his death. The party was a great success and while London, Stratford and many major cultural institutions went, in my view, a bit over-bard (sorry!), the VW’s party was graced by the presence of two Dames - Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, two star Shakespeare performers very much associated with the Old Vic. The party was held in the Old Vic rehearsal room where so many greats – from Ninette de Valois to Laurence Olivier – would have rehearsed. Our wonderful Vice-President, Nickolas Grace, introduced our star guests by talking about their associations with the Old Vic; he pointed out that we had two of the best St Joans ever in the room where they would have rehearsed: Eileen Atkins played St Joan for the Prospect Company at the Old Vic in 1977-8; Joan Plowright played the role for the National Theatre at the Old Vic in 1963. Nickolas also read out a letter from Ronald Pickup who had been invited to the party but was away in France. Ronald Pickup said that he often thought about how lucky he was to have six years at the National Theatre, then at Old Vic, at the beginning of his career (1966-72) and it had a huge impact on him. Dame Joan Plowright Dame Joan Plowright then regaled us with some of her memories of the Old Vic, starting with the story of how when she joined the Old Vic school in 1949 part of her ‘training’ was moving chairs in and out of the very room we were in. -
