Thus, learning the different arts and crafts of Mindanao – the salient features of arts of Mindanao by showing the relationship of the elements of arts and processes among the diverse cultural communities in the country. You will also learn the relationship of the development of crafts in specific areas of the country through creating products that can be assembled with local materials guided by traditional techniques. The arts and crafts of Mindanao include their cultural attire, textiles, tapestries, crafts, accessories and body ornaments which are a combination of designs from indigenous people that resides in the regions and the colorful and rich influence from their indigenous belief system. You will also learn in this module the relationship of Mindanao’s arts and crafts to Philippine culture and tradition that play Islamic influences and indigenous practices. These groups are mostly Muslims from the Badjao, Iranun, Jama Mapun, Kalagan, Kalibugan (Subanen who were converted to Islam), Manobo, Maguindanao, Sama Bangingi, Sama Pangutaran, Samal, Sangil, Tausug, and Yakan groups. Other groups are the Lumads, or those who have their indigenous beliefs and 3 traditions instead of converting to Islam or Christianity. B’laan is a combination of two words, “bila”, which means “house”, and “an” which means “people”. They are known for embroidery, brass ornaments and beadwork that are integrated in their traditional clothing. They wear clothes woven from abaca embellished with embroidery, buttons, and beads. The women wear heavy brass belts with numerous tiny bells that hang around their waistline. 4 They also cut mother-of-pearl into small shapes that look like sequins called takmun to form geometric patterns. Traditional Clothing of the Bagobo and the T’boli The Bagobos are a group of people that live in Davao. The name of this ethnolinguistic group comes from the words “bago” (new) and “obo” (growth). This is because they are believed to have come from the mixture of the native population with the Hindu migrants that entered Mindanao during the Sri Vijayan and Malapahit empires. The men wear t’nalak shorts, an undershirt, and a t’nalak coat. The bagani (hero/warrior) wear blood-red clothes and a head kerchief called tangkulu. These articles of clothing represent their courage. The T’boli who live in and around Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, are famous for their complicated beadwork, wonderful woven fabrics, and beautiful brass ornaments. Similar to Bagobos, they regard the t’nalak as sacred. Traditional wedding rituals involve the exchange of this textile. During the birth, it is used as cover. Traditional Clothing of the Mindanao Maranao means “People of the Lake”, referring to people who occupy the lands surrounding Lake Lanao. They are famous for their artworks, intricate weaving, wood carving, metal craft, and their epics. The Maranaos are known for their Malong. The malong is a traditional Filipino tube skirt that is made of hand- woven or machine-made multi-colored cotton cloth, bearing a variety of geometric or floral designs. It can be used in many ways. 5 The malong is similar to the sarong worn by peoples in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. But unlike the Sarong, the malong is longer and is stitched together at both ends to make a tube. The Malong is an important part of the Maranao life. A newborn is wrapped in it and, as he or she grows, it becomes a part of his or her daily life as clothing and as material for everyday use. A traditional dance called Kapa Malong Malong or Sambisa Malong, demonstrates the various ways of wearing a malong and its uses. Traditional Clothing of the Yakan Basilan is the home to the Yakans. They are popular for their skills in weaving. They weave very intricate designs in their textiles, which they use for their clothes and other accessories. Yakan hand-loomed fabrics are known for their use of bold colors and geometric patterns. The traditional Yakan art of weaving originated from their hometown Lamitan in the island of Basilan. Yakan fabrics are traditionally used as garments. The seputangan is a square cloth used by the Yakan women as a head cover or as belt. The badjulapi is a tight blouse with long sleeves. It is ornamented with gold, silver, or bronze buttons. CRAFTS, ACCESSORIES, AND BODY ORNAMENTS Sarimanok The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao. It comes from the words “sari” meaning cloth or garment and “manok” for chicken. It has become a significant symbol of Maranao art. It is depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its beaks or talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiritual motifs. It is said to be a symbol of good fortune. 6 Okir It refers to traditional and to unique carving and prominent any design among the Moro ethno- linguistic communities. The name comes from an old Malayan word which means carve or “ukit” in filipino. It is referred to as Okir in Maranao while Okkil in Maguindanao. Face Makeup and Body Ornaments A distinct form of visual arts of the Yakan is the facial make-up applied on brides and grooms. After applying a foundation of white powder, dots and lines are painted on the faces, creating the effect of formal and elaborate masks which match the ornate costumes of the couple. T’boli Accessories 1. Hilot – is a heavy brass belt worn by women during festivals. The T’boli nobility wear it with bracelets and anklets, furnished with ball-bearings that make a sound as the wearer walks. The bells that are hung from the distinctive brass or beaded belts signal the approach of a woman. 2. Suwatlmimotis – a wooden comb with colored glass beads hanging from it, worn toward the back of the head. 7 Brass Making - Kulintang The Kulintang is a musical instrument composed of eight different-sized brass gongs laid upon a wooden rack. It is made of brass with intricate designs and embossed top where it can be hit by wooden mallets to produce music. Other brass instruments include the gandang, the two -headed cylindrical drums, as well as the duahanagong pair consisting of the bua and pulakan. ARCHITECTURE Torogan The Torogan is the ancestral house of the upper-class Maranao. It is the dwelling place of the datu along with his wives and children. There could not be any house larger than Torogan of the datu within the sultanate, for this signifies rank, prestige, and wealth. The National Museum has declared the Maranao Torogan, specifically the Kawayan Torogan as one of the National treasures through Museum Declaration No. 4-2008. Panolong The Panolong is a wing-like ornament of a Torogan flaring out from the beams.

Some are used for religious activities while some have utilitarian functions and even became large industry for them. Even until now, the skills in weaving, sculpting and crafting have been an important part of their community. Thus, these become the people’s way of living and their means of survival. These are passed on from generation to generation.

    Female Filipino Costumes 1.1. Mestiza The Mestiza Dress is a formal dress made of expensive lace and fabric adorned with embroideries. It is the sophisticated version of the national costume, the baro't saya (blouse and skirt). Made more popular by former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, some even called it Imelda dress or terno. Mestiza dress is known for its elegance and butterfly sleeves. It is usually worn for formal occasion. 2. Maria Clara Dress Maria Clara's dress was named after a mestiza heroine of one of the novels of the Philippine National hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Its origin was the national costume of Filipino women which is baro't (shirt) saya (skirt). The Maria Clara gown feat ures a floor-length paneled skirt of silk or satin and it consists of four separate pieces: the collarless waist-length, bell sleeved camisa; the bubble-shaped, floor-length saya; the stiff, neck-covering pañuelo; and the hip-hugging, knee length tapis, or overskirt. 3. Kimona Dress This dress originated from the Visayas, can be worn for everyday activities as casual dress or for formal occasion. Its origin was the baro't (shirt) saya (skirt), the national costume for Filipino women during the early years. A casual kimona dress is always worn with matching West Visayan wrap around called "patadyong" as a skirt. 4. Igorot This attire is used by the tribes in Mountain Province of The Cordillera ranges, called Igorots. They have their own unique costume that makes them distinctive from other tribes in the Philippines. This costume reflects their way of life, cultures, personalities, religious practices and rituals.

    Archaeological Survey of Southern Zamboanga and the Sulu Archipelago Received 24 June I968 ALEXANDER SPOEHR* HE Sulu Archipelago is of archaeological interest in that it. forms a southern route of T entry into the Philippines and in historic times was a trading center for the exchange of goods between the Moluccas, Borneo, Sulu itself, China, and mainland Southeast Asia. At the same time, it has had close relations with the_S9utl1~rn pjl.rt of the ZambQanga_ PeninsUla, aswellas wIth northern coastalBorneo (se;-Fig. I). Previous archaeological explorations in Zamboanga and Sulu are summarized in Beyer (1947:318-338). These had as their primary interest the recovery of Chinese and Southeast Asian trade ceramics, as exemplified by the Michigan survey (Guthe 1929) and the work of resident officials such as F. G. Roth. No stratigraphic excavations have ever been under­ taken in the area. During July and August 1967, I conducted an archaeological survey of the southern tip of Zamboanga Peninsula, J 010, and Siasi for the purpose of locating midden sites suitable for stratigraphic excavations. This note reports on the results of the survey. Survey collections are deposited at the National Museum, Manila. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY Certain practical problems confront any archaeological survey of the region. The southern tip of Zamboanga Peninsula has a good coastal road system linking the principal barrios. However, the limited road systems of Basilan and Jolo link a few coastal points by roads across each island, which makes land survey difficult, while other islands in the Sulu archi­ pelago lack road systems altogether. Consequently, survey by sea for the Sulu islands is imperative.

One cannot decipher if it is a woman chanting, or perhaps a flute rendering a simi- lar sound. A lively, bouncing kobing1 enters the melodic soundscape. Rattling engenders anticipation in a suspense-filled theater. The thumping of a primal drum and the clashing/crashing of gongs generate sounding in a chaotic frenzy, which makes its way into for the procession from stage left; it is led by two bare-chested men carrying 10 foot poles with flag like tassels hanging from what looks like large pointy “rice hats.” Three Figure 1: malong2-clad ballerinas follow closely behind, execut- Poster of ing coupé en dehor pirouettes alternately left, right, left, the right twirling their woven palm leaf fans. The sash is perhaps a fusion of an Ancient Roman warrior costume and a “native” g-string? A line of maidens in long or- ange dresses and gold okir4-esque tiaras walk in smil- ingly, arms in a Bayanihan5 Pangalay style fourth ettes. The men, choreographed in a musical queue, with position, with flexed wrists. Kolintang6 gongs tinkle in legs splayed in second position, imitate the pounding the background as the “King” strides in, donned in a drums in the air, as if manifesting what has become a black waist-length jacket, knee length tights, gold very “native” or “primal” atmosphere.

It also sought the strategies used by the tribe to withhold their practices as well as their hopes and aspiration. The study made use of the interview to the selected ten elders of the tribe and conducted also a focused group discussion to the seven datus surrounding Sitio Kapda, Barangay Sab- ud, Loreto, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. It is revealed in the study that rituals, belief in the spirits, marriages, healing, settling disputes, buri- als and choosing new leader were the practices of the tribe. As pious people, their activities are always consulted with unseen spirits to whom they believed to have interference of every activity of human being. It is revealed that the oral tradition was the most common way of conveying their practices to the young so that it will continue to exist. The family was the first venue of such witnessing of practice. They be- lieved in the unity and faith of the tribe in order to continue their practices. It made known from the study that the tribe longed for indigenous education for their young to use when they led the tribe in the future. They wanted also that they have their own land to live where the next generation can exercise their beliefs and practice their rituals.

The memhers of the Profiteering Commission (1920) who were " impressed and much handicapped by the absence of any recorded information relating to fish and fisheries," made certain recom- mendations for the future control and organisation of the fishing industry and these recommendations have received the approval of- the Government. With the best will in the world, the task of Legislators and Fishery Officers who have no data or records to guide them, and are therefore unalile to discuss our local fish and fisheries except in vague terms, would be as fruitless in the future as it has been in the past. Allowiing, therefore, that recorded information in the form of a hand-book on Malayan Fishes is wanted and wanted at once,, the diflSculty arises that there is no one qualified or likely to be qualified for some years to write such a book.
