The arts and crafts of Mindanao include their cultural attire, textiles, tapestries, crafts, accessories and body ornaments which are a combination of designs from indigenous people that resides in the regions and the colorful and rich influence from their indigenous belief system. Most of their crafts are made of materials that are abundant in their areas. Their designs are derived from their surroundings and represent their cultural community. Some are used for religious activities while some have utilitarian functions and even became large industry for them. Even until now, the skills in weaving, sculpting and crafting have been an important part of their community. Thus, these become the people’s way of living and their means of survival. These are passed on from generation to generation. -

The present study was undertaken in order to untangle some of the problems of classification which have beset this group. The genera have not been studied in toto since the days of Bleeker and Gunther. In this study I have made an attempt to clarify the relationships of the various genera, which in some cases has involved revision of generic limits. Lack of time and material has precluded a thorough analysis of the species within any genus; for the same reason no skeletal examinations were possible. It is hoped, however, that a clarification of generic limits through study of external characters will make it easier in the future for interested workers, with sufficient material at hand, to do further and much-needed work on both the genera and the species. Employing Geographical Information Systems in Fisheries Management in the Mekong River: a case study of Lao PDR Kaviphone Phouthavongs A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the Degree of Master of Science School of Geosciences University of Sydney June 2006 ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to employ Geographical Information Systems to fisheries management in the Mekong River Basin. The study uses artisanal fisheries practices in Khong district, Champasack province Lao PDR as a case study. The research focuses on integrating indigenous and scientific knowledge in fisheries management; how local communities use indigenous knowledge to access and manage their fish conservation zones; and the contribution of scientific knowledge to fishery co-management practices at village level. Specific attention is paid to how GIS can aid the integration of these two knowledge systems into a sustainable management system for fisheries resources. Fieldwork was conducted in three villages in the Khong district, Champasack province and Catch per Unit of Effort / hydro-acoustic data collected by the Living Aquatic Resources Research Centre was used to analyse and look at the differences and/or similarities between indigenous and scientific knowledge which can supplement each other and be used for small scale fisheries management. The results show that GIS has the potential not only for data storage and visualisation, but also as a tool to combine scientific and indigenous knowledge in digital maps. Integrating indigenous knowledge into a GIS framework can strengthen indigenous knowledge, from un processed data to information that scientists and decision-makers can easily access and use as a supplement to scientific knowledge in aquatic resource decision-making and planning across different levels. -

Female Filipino Costumes 1.1. Mestiza The Mestiza Dress is a formal dress made of expensive lace and fabric adorned with embroideries. It is the sophisticated version of the national costume, the baro't saya (blouse and skirt). Made more popular by former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, some even called it Imelda dress or terno. Mestiza dress is known for its elegance and butterfly sleeves. It is usually worn for formal occasion. 2. Maria Clara Dress Maria Clara's dress was named after a mestiza heroine of one of the novels of the Philippine National hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Its origin was the national costume of Filipino women which is baro't (shirt) saya (skirt). The Maria Clara gown feat ures a floor-length paneled skirt of silk or satin and it consists of four separate pieces: the collarless waist-length, bell sleeved camisa; the bubble-shaped, floor-length saya; the stiff, neck-covering pañuelo; and the hip-hugging, knee length tapis, or overskirt. 3. Kimona Dress This dress originated from the Visayas, can be worn for everyday activities as casual dress or for formal occasion. Its origin was the baro't (shirt) saya (skirt), the national costume for Filipino women during the early years. A casual kimona dress is always worn with matching West Visayan wrap around called "patadyong" as a skirt. 4. Igorot This attire is used by the tribes in Mountain Province of The Cordillera ranges, called Igorots. They have their own unique costume that makes them distinctive from other tribes in the Philippines. This costume reflects their way of life, cultures, personalities, religious practices and rituals. -

Madhu IDENTIFICATION Order : Perciformes Family : Ephippidae Common/FAO Name (English) : Longfin batfish Local names:names Not available MORPHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION Body is deep and compressed; body depth is 0.9-1.2 times standard length of fish. Juveniles are also deep bodied with very long pelvic fins and long anal and dorsal fins (which shorten on becoming adults). Fins are elevated in both adults and juveniles. The fish is covered with small, ctenoid scales. It has a terminal mouth with bands of tricuspid teeth. Adults are silver-grey in colour, with a dark band through the eye extending to origin of pelvic fin and from base of dorsal fin origin to belly. A black blotch may be present at the terminus of the second band. A small black vertical streak is often present at origin of anal fin. Median fins are with black margins posteriorly. Five pores are on each side of lower jaw. Preopercle is smooth and opercle is without spines. Dorsal spines (total): 5-6; dorsal soft rays (total): 28-37; anal spines: 3 and anal soft rays: 22-28. Source of image : CMFRI, Kochi 349 PROFILE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION Platax teira is distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific region from the Red Sea to South Africa, Japan (Hokkaido), Taiwan Province of China, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, northern Australia and Melanesia. It is also reported from Bay of Islands, New Zealand and Persian Gulf. HABITAT AND BIOLOGY Adults are found in sheltered bays, offshore areas, lagoons and seaward reefs. -

President Lundberg plans to move blanket acceptance of all reports included in this book which covers society business from 2008 and 2009. The book includes the ballot information for the 2009 elections (Board of Govenors and Annual Business Meeting). Governors can ask to have items exempted from blanket approval. These exempted items will will be acted upon individually. We will also act individually on items exempted by the Executive Committee. Please remember to bring this booklet with you to the meeting.
