Paradoxically, despite a long history of inquiry into spit and barrier formation, understanding of the dynamics and sedimentary history of tombolos over the Holocene timescale is poor. At Tyre and Alexandria we demonstrate that these rare coastal features are the heritage of a long history of natural morphodynamic forcing and human impacts. In 332 BC, following a protracted seven-month siege of the city, Alexander the Great's engineers cleverly exploited a shallow sublittoral sand bank to seize the island fortress; Tyre's causeway served as a prototype for Alexandria's Heptastadium built a few months later. We report stratigraphic and geomorphological data from the two sand spits, proposing a chronostratigraphic model of tombolo evolution. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. It follows several anthropologists who travelled to east Nusa Tenggara (the Timor Archipelago, including the islands of Timor, Flores and Sumba), where Alfred Russel Wallace had drawn a dividing line between the races of the east and the west of the archipelago. These medically trained anthropologists aimed to find out if the Wallace Line could be more precisely defined with measurements of the human body. The paper shows how anthropologists failed to find definite markers to quantify the difference between Malay and Papuan/Melanesian. This, however, did not diminish the conceptual power of the Wallace Line, as the idea of a boundary between Malays and Papuans was taken up in the political arena during the West New Guinea dispute and was employed as a political tool by all parties involved. It shows how colonial and racial concepts can be appropriated by local actors and dismissed or emphasised depending on political perspectives. The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. -

Flores Curatorial Circulations in Southeast Asia n Bangkok during the nineteenth century, the Thai king of the Chakri dynasty, Chulalongkorn, reserved a place in the royal palace for a museum he called phrabas phiphitaphan, or “a tour of various I 1 materials.” In the early part of the twentieth century, the American anthropologist, census-taker, and museum maker Dean Worcester went around the islands of the Philippines to document ethnicity. These forays share something with the toils of British explorer Sir Stamford Raffles, who, as recounted by an attentive observer, hoarded his people and things: “He kept four persons on wages, each in his peculiar department; one to go to the forests in search of various kinds of flowers, fungi, pulp, and such like products. Another he sent to collect all kinds of flies, grasshoppers, centipedes, bees, scorpions.”2 The intersection between the amassing of objects and people through the devices of the wunderkammer (a collection of objects without defined categories) and anthropometry (the study of human physical measurement in anthropology), well known in the discourse of reconnaissance, leads us to ponder the scale of the colonial in relation to the scale of the modern, the monument of empire and the miniature of periphery. Over time, this act of rendering the world picturesque and therefore collectible may be coincidental with the act of representation of both the self and the state, as can be gleaned in the efforts of the Thai king, the American social scientist, and the British discoverer. -

VAN KAMPEN TRANSLATED FROM THE DUTCH BY THOMAS BARBOUR TRANSLATOR'S NOTE NEARLY a year ago I received from my friend Dr. van Kampen a paper which seemed at once of such present interest and general excellence that I believed it should be made available for English-speaking students of zoo geography. Its original publication in Java makes it inaccessible to many. The essay was written to be read before the Debating Club of the Batavian Royal Natural History Society; and I am under obligation to both Dr. van Kampen and the president of the Koninklijke Natuurkundig Vereeniging for permission to make and publish this translation. THE ZOOGEOGRAPHY OF THE EAST INDIAN ARCHIPELAGO Even a superficial examination shows us that a very considerable faunistic differentiation exists between the western and eastern halves of the Indo-Australian archi pelago. Perhaps this differentiation is most evident amongst the mammals. If one compares, for instance, Sumatra with New Guinea, one finds at once upon the first-named island a number of large mammals, such as the tiger and the leopard, the rhinoceros and the tapir, which are of course unknown upon New Guinea. Here, on the other hand, certain marsupials are found, as well as the strange egg-laying ant-eaters, of which there is no sign upon Sumatra. Elson Excerpt More information 1 The origins of the idea of Indonesia Before the twentieth century, there was no Indonesia and thus no Indonesians. In the archipelago that stretched between continental Asia and Australia, states and statelets abounded, some loosely articulated by slowly gathering Dutch imperial power, but localism remained the predom- inant motif of political and cultural identity. There was ‘not a single flag but many flags’.1 Equally, there was in the archipelago nothing by way of broadly conceived, modern, decisive, indigenous leadership. The political idea of ‘Indonesia’ (that is, that there was an archipelago-wide state, and that it might have other forms of existence than as the colony of a cold, wet little country facing the North Sea) was very slow to develop in comparison with thinking of a similar kind in, say, China or India or Vietnam. Indeed, no one knew quite what to name the region until the early decades of the twentieth century. Non-Dutch travellers and officials called it ‘the Eastern Seas’, ‘the Eastern Islands’, ‘the Indian Archipelago’, to name a few. The Dutch some- times employed terms like ‘the Indies’, ‘the East Indies’, ‘the Indies pos- sessions’, or even, later, ‘Insulinde’ (the islands of the Indies), and as their political connection with the region grew, ‘the Netherlands (East) Indies’, and they saw it as part of ‘tropisch Nederland’ (the tropical Netherlands). The word ‘Indonesia’ was first manufactured in 1850 in the form ‘Indu-nesians’ by the English traveller and social observer George Samuel Windsor Earl. -
Languages of Flores
Are the Central Flores languages really typologically unusual? Alexander Elias January 13, 2020 1 Abstract The isolating languages of Central Flores (Austronesian) are typologically distinct from their nearby relatives. They have no bound morphology, as well elaborate numeral clas- sifier systems, and quinary-decimal numeral system. McWhorter (2019) proposes that their isolating typology is due to imperfect adult language acquisition of a language of Sulawesi, brought to Flores by settlers from Sulawesi in the relatively recent past. I pro- pose an alternative interpretation, which better accounts for the other typological features found in Central Flores: the Central Flores languages are isolating because they have a strong substrate influence from a now-extinct isolating language belonging to the Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area (Gil 2015). This explanation better accounts for the typological profile of Central Flores and is a more plausible contact scenario. Keywords: Central Flores languages, Eastern Indonesia, isolating languages, Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area, substrate influence 2 Introduction The Central Flores languages (Austronesian; Central Malayo-Polynesian) are a group of serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems spoken on the island of Flores, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the east of Indonesia. These languages, which are almost completely lacking in bound morphology, include Lio, Ende, Nage, Keo, Ngadha and Rongga. Taken in their local context, this typological profile is unusual: other Austronesian languages of eastern Indonesia generally have some bound morphology and non-obligatory numeral classifier systems. However, in a broader view, the Central Flores languages are typologically similar to many of the isolating languages of Mainland Southeast Asia and Western New Guinea, many of which are also isolating, serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems. -

Search | Glossary | Home << previous | next > > Natural Selection: Charles Darwin & Alfred Russel Wallace The genius of Darwin (left), the way in which he suddenly turned all of biology upside down in 1859 with the publication of the Origin of Species , can sometimes give the misleading impression that the theory of evolution sprang from his forehead fully formed without any precedent in scientific history. But as earlier chapters in this history have shown, the raw material for Darwin's theory had been known for decades. Geologists and paleontologists had made a compelling case that life had been on Earth for a long time, that it had changed over that time, and that many species had become extinct. At the same time, embryologists and other naturalists studying living animals in the early 1800s had discovered, sometimes unwittingly, much of the A visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835 helped Darwin best evidence for Darwin's formulate his ideas on natural selection. He found theory. several species of finch adapted to different environmental niches. The finches also differed in beak shape, food source, and how food was captured. Pre-Darwinian ideas about evolution It was Darwin's genius both to show how all this evidence favored the evolution of species from a common ancestor and to offer a plausible mechanism by which life might evolve. Lamarck and others had promoted evolutionary theories, but in order to explain just how life changed, they depended on speculation. Typically, they claimed that evolution was guided by some long-term trend. Lamarck, for example, thought that life strove over time to rise from simple single-celled forms to complex ones. -

Lingkar Akademik, Kampus IPB Darmaga, Bogor 16680, Indonesia Abstract The sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) variabilities in the south of Makassar Strait were mostly affected by monsoonal wind speed/directions and riverine freshwater inflows. The east-southeast (ESE) wind (May-October) played a major role in an upwelling formation in the region starting in the southern tip of the southern Sulawesi Island. Of the 17 years time period, the variability of the SST values ranged from 25.7°C (August 2004) - 30.89°C (March 2007). An upwelling initiation typically occurred in early May when ESE wind speed was at <5 m/s, a fully developed upwelling event usually occurred in June when ESE wind speed reached >5 m/s, whereas the largest upwelling event always occurred in August of each year. Upwelling event generally diminished in September and terminated in October. At the time of the maximum upwelling events (August), the formation of upwelling could be observed up to about 330 km toward the southwest of the southern tip of the Sulawesi island. Interannually, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) intensified the upwelling event during the east season through an intensification of the ESE wind speed.
