    Beyond the Check-Boxes: Exploring Genderqueer Identity My rules for using labels: Some labels I use in self-identification: ● rule 1: labels work best when we determine ● Genderqueer describes my gender identity them for ourselves ● Butch describes my appearance ● rule 2: labels are only good as long as they ● Queer describes my sexuality, not limited by work for you gender ● rule 3: labels can be used alone or in combination; combinations add complexity and depth Remember: different people interpret different Remember: labels are words, words are labels differently: to communicate better, go beyond approximations we use to communicate complex the shorthand concepts, they are short-hand and don’t tell the whole story Why use Labels? In some very basic ways, we use labels to help us identify who is a friend/enemy, who might be attracted to us and who we might be attracted to. We also seek out people we think are like us, to form alliances and find common-ground, people who will support and understand us. Even though words are just approximations, we rely on words to communicate with others. For many of us, words also form the backbone of our thought processes, our inner dialogue, as we seek to explore and define ourselves. Unfortunately, labels can also be used against us, to limit us, box us in and as the basis for discrimination and bigotry.     MOVING BEYOND RESISTANCE AND MEDICALIZATION: Challenging Common Representations of Bareback Sex and HIV through Ethnography Julien Brisson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the MA degree in anthropology School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Julien Brisson, Ottawa, Canada, 2015 ABSTRACT Condomless sex between gay men, also known as bareback sex, has been a popular object of research since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. One of the most common perspectives on studying bareback sex has been through a medicalization approach, as it may be observed notably with public health and psychology. In other instances, the abandonment of condom use is framed as an intentional act of resistance to public health. Through the methodological approach of ethnography, I studied how young gay men in their twenties from Toronto understand bareback sex in relations to popular discourses of the sexual practice. While my informants initially had a certain way of talking of bareback sex, their narratives on the sexual practice changed with time and challenged the common representations of bareback sex as either a site of resistance or medicalization, which I argue was possible because of the methodological approach of ethnography. During fieldwork, other themes also emerged in regards to shaping understandings of bareback sex and HIV as it relates to young gay men, such as the traumatic memories of an older generation who witnessed the earlier days of the AIDS epidemic. From this anthropological research, I seek to invite the opportunity to rethink the relationship between sex, biomedical science and HIV.

Students of French have to learn to disrupt the normal Subject-Verb-Object pattern of declarative sentences, and to insert object pronouns directly before the verb. Moreover, the preverbal alignment of these clitics does not always reflect the left-to-right order of postverbal phrases to which the pronouns correspond. There are additionally certain puzzling incompatibilities among clitics. The purpose of this thesis is to offer an explanation for pre­ verbal clitic order, and not to account for impermissible clitic sequences. The problems posed by French pronouns are approached within the framework of generative grammar, especially as exemplified in Kayne’s (1975) French Syntax.
