A dynamic literary signifier in nineteenth-century literature, the young hero epitomizes the problematic existence encountered by the individual in post-revolutionary France. Stéphanie Dord-Crouslé (CNRS – UMR 5611 LIRE) In order to deal with the editorial problems raised by the work of Gustave Flaubert, I would like here to focus on the point of intersection of two developments, both of them historical, although in different senses. The first one is related to a changing technological situation, thanks to the fast and widespread movement towards using digital supports for the publication of large-scale corpora. The networks for publishing research in France, nonetheless, remain strongly tied to the printed medium. The second problem, less historical than biographical, is rather in connection with my scientific career. I would like to explain how my work on Flaubert’s avant-textes and their publication have transformed my vision of what the final edited version of a text should be, whether it be on paper or in digital form. I will thus especially try to emphasize the interferences at the crossroads (between history and my story), while describing various projects in progress. The corpus of Flaubert’s « complete works » is well defined and of approachable size; it has nothing in common with Balzac's Human Comedy or Proust's Remembrance of Things Past . It contains a collection of « short stories », entitled Three Tales , four novels: Madame Bovary , Salammbô , A Sentimental Education and Bouvard and Pécuchet , and a text of a problematic genre : The Temptation of Saint Anthony , a hybrid between novella and play.

    OUTIL D’EXPLOITATION Portrait de George Sand par Auguste Charpentier, 1838 (Copie, original conservé au Musée de la Vie romantique à Paris) Cette huile sur toile, conçue en 1838 par Auguste Charpentier, a été réalisée à Nohant en 1838. A cette époque, la vie de George Sand connaît plusieurs changements. La séparation avec Casimir Dudevant est prononcée depuis 1836 et la jeune femme retrouve sa liberté ainsi que le domaine familial. Sa grande carrière littéraire est lancée depuis quelques années, avec Indiana, un véritable succès, et Lélia, qui fait scandale. Le XIXe siècle offre aux artistes une imagerie abondante grâce à la diversité des moyens de production (peinture, sculpture, gravure, dessin) mais aussi aux progrès de la photographie. George Sand saisit rapidement l’intérêt promotionnel du portrait et veille attentivement à son image et sa diffusion. Auguste Charpentier (1813-1880) est peu connu lorsqu’il se rend à Nohant pour peindre George Sand et ses enfants. La célébrité de son modèle rejaillit vite sur l’artiste qui acquiert par la suite une certaine renommée sous le Second Empire en réalisant le portrait de nombreuses personnalités. Dès son arrivée à Nohant, le peintre fait part à sa tante de ses impressions : « C’est la plus admirable tête que l’on puisse voir, et je ne suis pas encore revenu de ma première impression. Je commence son portrait demain seulement, et j’ai voulu avant passer une journée pour étudier son admirable personne. Essayer de vous la dépeindre serait impossible, je vais rassembler tous mes moyens pour tâcher de la réussir et alors, d’après son portrait, vous pourrez en avoir une petite idée… C’est depuis ces 2 soirées que j’ai pu admirer cette femme si belle et si remarquable à qui on ne donnerait pas plus de 28 ans… ».

Bachelor of Arts (UWA) Diploma in Modern Languages (French) (UWA) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities (Discipline-French) 2014 ABSTRACT Overlooked and Overshadowed: French Women’s Writing 1900-1938 This study examines how women in France between 1900 and 1938 (before during and after the Great War) were represented in the writings of four selected women writers - Marcelle Tinayre (1870-1948), Colette Yver (1874-1953), Lucie Delarue-Mardrus (1874-1945) and Marcelle Capy (1891-1962). These authors, fêted in their time have now been largely excluded from contemporary studies on women in early twentieth-century France. The thesis demonstrates how their personal circumstances and the politico-social events of 1900-1938 influenced the way each writer represented women over time, and reveals that women’s writings were not homogenous in theme or in focus. By reading these texts alongside other contemporaneous texts (newspaper articles, reviews and writings by other women), the analyses show that Tinayre, Yver, Delarue-Madrus and Capy challenge and complicate stereotypical perspectives produced mainly by male authors of the same era. Using a longitudinal approach, the study explores each author’s selected texts across three distinct periods - the belle époque, the Great War and the inter-war. Such a reading makes it possible to assess changes in their writing in response to contemporary social and political events in France. By looking at four writers writing across the same era the diversity of women’s lives is also underlined.
