I took up my pen and started writing a film column for The Clarion-Ledger, a Gannett-owned newspaper, back in the late 90s, when I moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Jackson, Mississippi. (It was like a Johnny Cash song… “Yeah, I’m going to Jackson. Look out Jackson Town….”) I then turned my pen to writing for The Jackson Free Press, an indie weekly newspaper, which provided me opportunities to write about indie films and interesting people. I threw down the pen, as well as stopped my public radio movie reviews and the television segment I had for an ABC affiliate, when I moved three years ago from Jackson to Nashville to head Butler Snow’s Entertainment and Media Industry Group. This research used quantitative conceptual content analysis of news articles from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, People, and Entertainment Weekly. This research discovered whether media used in this study framed prescription drug deaths more positively than illegal drug deaths, which was proved to be true. It also determined media did not employ socially responsible frames when reporting on these deaths. The last question in this research discovered if the type of drug involved in the celebrities’ death influenced the way media portrayed the celebrities’ character. This research proved that, when reporting on negative drug overdoses, media framed celebrities’ perceptions negatively but found no evidence of positive celebrity perceptions when reporting about prescription drug overdoses.

(Though, admittedly, if you want to know anything about the aforementioned film festival beyond simply its dates, you’ll need to go to www.edfilmfest.org.uk on or after 10am on the 23 May!) Yes, it’s our annual Bumper [early] Summer Double Issue, packed with more films than I care to mention (again). There’s a lot in it for sure. It’s a bit daunting, I know. Take it slow. Take an hour. Savour it, one page of great films at a time. There’s so much in it, I had to apologise to the staff for giving them so much work to do. But, don’t tell them, I couldn’t really care less… your cinematic pleasure comes first! (It’s OK, they think that too.) But, it’s like the fella said, quantity is never a substitute for quality – that’s why we’ve got that covered too. You will, of course, want to find that out for yourself… We’re entering the second half of our significant Bergman retro (that is, Ingmar), and I’m very hopeful we can continue attracting such healthy audiences (though one or two of you did look a little peaky, if I’m honest) as the season progresses. So far audience numbers have been very encouraging indeed.
