THE HISTORY OF THE NAME National Association of Medical Examiners Past Presidents History eBook 2012 EDITION Published by the Past Presidents Committee on the Occasion of the 46th Annual Meeting at Baltimore, Maryland Preface to the 2012 NAME History eBook The Past Presidents Committee has been continuing its effort of compiling the NAME history for the occasion of the 2016 NAME Meeting’s 50th Golden Anniversa- ry Meeting. The Committee began collecting historical materials and now solicits the histories of individual NAME Members in the format of a guided autobiography, i.e. memoir. Seventeen past presidents have already contributed their memoirs, which were publish in a eBook in 2011. We continued the same guided autobiography format for compiling historical ma- terial, and now have additional memoirs to add also. This year, the book will be combined with the 2011 material, and some previous chapters have been updated. The project is now extended to all the NAME members, who wish to contribute their memoirs. The standard procedure is also to submit your portrait with your historical/ memoir material. Some of the memoirs are very short, and contains a minimum information, however the editorial team decided to include it in the 2012 edition, since it can be updated at any time. The 2012 edition Section I – Memoir Series Section II - ME History Series – individual medical examiner or state wide system history Presented in an alphabetic order of the name state Section III – Dedication Series - NAME member written material dedicating anoth- er member’s contributions and pioneer work, or newspaper articles on or dedicated to a NAME member Plan for 2013 edition The Committee is planning to solicit material for the chapters dedicated to specifi- cally designated subjects, such as Women in the NAME, Standard, Inspection and Accreditation Program. The original article on the NAME Standards by Leslie Lukash should also be published, added to the material on current developments on the standard of forensic autopsy, history of the Name Journal, etc. We will continue to solicit materials for historical articles on each ME offices, and review of history from the beginning of statehood. We will also like to continue soliciting authors for articles dedicated to the pioneers. The production team consists of three past presidents, Randy Hanzlick, Jeffrey Jentzen and myself. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to those who contributed articles for the eBook. The 2012 edition is now also readable on iPad, thanks to graphic designer Raul Vergara. Of course, you can still read it on your computer. The Committee would also like to express our appreciation to Denise Mc- Nally for her continuous dedication to the tedious coordinating work. Past Presidents Since the preface to the 2011 NAME History eBook was written, we had two more Past Presidents join the Past Presidents Committee, Mary Ann Sens, M.D. (2011) and Andrew M. Baker, M.D. (2012). This past year, we lost our Past President Frank P. Cleveland (1976-1977). Thomas T. Noguchi September 2012 Preface 2011 Edition The Past Presidents Committee is comprised of the Past Presidents of the Associa- tion. The Past Presidents Committee may make recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the activities and future direction of the Association. The Chair shall be elected annually by the membership of the Past Presidents Committee. Over the past 20 years, the Committee has been accumulating historical materials on the NAME as well as on related history prior to the establishment of the NAME in 1966. The first history poster presentation was exhibited in the ship gallery during the 25th Anniversary Meeting on the American Hawaii Cruise Ship in 1991. The celebration banquet for that meeting was held on the Island of Kauai. This earlier history of the NAME presentation resulted in two posters, one dealing with the forma- tive years of the NAME with photographs of the NAME Presidents. In 2001, on the occasion of the 35TH Anniversary Meeting at Richmond, the Committee presented two large history posters that updated the earlier posters, showing the Founders and early formative years of the NAME, and added another on the NAME Standards, In- spection and Accreditation Program. During the Annual Past Presidents luncheons, discussions were devoted to the documentation and archiving the historical materials of the NAME. In preparation for this 45th Anniversary Meeting, our efforts were devoted to the gathering and publication of the Memoirs of the NAME members. This is a part of the Committee effort for the preparation of the 50th Anniversary publication of the definitive History of the NAME. This idea on collecting memoirs stemmed from my enrolment with my wife, Hisako in the USC Emeriti College course, “Guided Autobiography” three years ago. Guided Autobiography was presented as a technique of writing your biography by answering set questions, and putting your answers together to form your biography. From time to time, such biography can be reviewed and updated or you may wish to add more photographs. We have now close to 150 pages on hand from NAME members, who have submit- ted their autobiographies. The Committee would like to publish all the Past Presi- dents’ memoirs this year. Sidney was my mentor although I studied Forensic Pathology at the University of Basel, Switzerland for one year under Professor Jurg ImObersteg (1962-1963). I also worked at the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office under Milton Helpern (1968) and I would also count John Devlin as one of my mentors. At the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office there were two cases that stand out: The murders of the DeFeo Family (which later became involved in the “Amityville Horror”) and the case of Karen Pomroy which was a landmark case in the legal definition of the term “death” (led to the acceptance of the term “brain death”). Not officially working as a Medical Examiner, I was a consultant to the Coroner’s Office in Warren Ohio (1979-1989) and one of my cases was so brutal (and was the first case in that jurisdiction that involved bite mark evidence) that I was awarded a plaque from the police department and a mayoral proclamation naming one day after me. Michael D. Bell, M.D. NAME President 2003 Chief Medical Examiner, Palm Beach, Florida 20005-Present Why did I select forensic pathology as a career? I think it was an inevitable outcome. I have always sensed that my curiosity about death went beyond most people’s interest. I was determined to be a physician since I was a child, if for no other reason than to be one. In college, Dr. Wimsat, whose research involved bats, introduced me to histology and organology. I loved it. Now if only I could get a paying job where I could do this all day. In medical school, I de- cided to be a pathologist and after listening to a medical examiner (actually he was a coroner) for two hours, I knew that is what I wanted to do every day. Places and times I served as Chief Medical Examiner I have been the Chief Medical Examiner of Palm Beach County in Florida for six years, since 2005. This is the longest I have ever held a single job in one place. I have never been a Chief anywhere else, although I did apply for the Chief position in Massachusetts in 2004. I am so glad I didn’t get that job! Major accomplishments as Chief Medical Examiner Remaining employed! Let’s face it. When things go wrong, you are the target. But seriously, I am proud of the people who work in my office. They make all the dif- ference and are the reason why I will stay.

Brad Renfro, Skeet Ulrich, Axl Rose, Leif Garrett—I’m listing those things or people I find immediately identifiable in this Hawkins painting of 2017 that I’m looking at in a fairly hi-res digital reproduction, while sitting under a canopy in the noonday sun of Cornino, clear across the entire island of Sicily from Taormina— two different Morandi still lifes (at the top and near the bottom of the painting), numerous b/w reproductions of various Greco-Roman and/or Greco-Roman-like statuary (a few Hercules-es, some hermaphrodites), a vivid pink and yellow de Kooning, Richard Lindner’s Ice (1966), a particular guy with a prominent red kanji or ideogram tattoo on his left pectoral whose name it kills me I can’t recall at the moment and with/by whom Hawkins was obsessed/distracted for a year or more, a few Japanese male models ditto (i.e., the artist was obsessed/distracted with/by them, too, and it kills me I can’t think of their names [not Daisuke Ueda, not Seijo, not Osamu Mukai]), an Egon Schiele self-portrait (?), perhaps a bit of a Rudolf Schwarzkogler perf, Lon Chaney (maybe Bela Lugosi) on an elaborate Hollywood-set staircase as Dracula. Walking down an ersatz West Village street, Tom Cruise has fallen into daydreaming again, triggered by a man and woman kissing deeply in front of a gaudy shop (windows trimmed in neon, lace, Christmas lights); he flashes on Nicole and her fantasy naval officer going at it: this time she’s almost naked, his strong hand fingers her pussy.

In this article we will explore how HBO came to legitimatise a contemporary television culture through producing distinct divisions ad infinitum, framed as being rooted outside mainstream commercial television production. In creating incessant divisions in genre, authorship and aesthetics, HBO incorporates artistic norms and principles of evaluation and puts them into circulation as a succession of oppositions— oppositions that we will explore throughout this paper.

    Monday, June 03, 2013 A three day weekend that extends into Monday makes for a short week. The short week, in turn, makes for an abundant amount of fast paced activities. Somehow, everyone managed to fit these activities into the four day week. Tuesday evening provided a special time for the school board and I to discuss the district’s vision and goals. The school board’s focused work over the course of the evening provided clear direction for our administration and we look forward to embracing the challenges that lie ahead. Wednesday gave me the chance to walk through my old elementary – Garfield. Although the campus is not the same, walking through some classrooms reminded me of the excitement for learning which teachers created then and continue to create today. When I entered Mrs. Jackeline Rodriguez’s second grade class I observed students working on what appeared to be a writing assignment. As soon as I asked one student for permission to read their essay, four others pleasantly asked me if I would read their work as well. One student suggested that I read all five pieces and then select the best one. Clearly, he suggested we have an essay contest. Being an avid proponent for competition, I agreed and read all five pieces. Congratulations to David Underwood, the winner of our unofficial essay contest. Thursday morning I visited Buena Vista’s Fitness Day and was able to observe firsthand the organized excitement created for the students. Back in our elementary days, the field day events were mostly individual events where there were clearly winners and losers, a notion that is sometimes too hard for a seven year old to handle.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider.

    WHAT I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES ABOUT LEGAL ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM By Anita Modak-Truran HOW I GOT HERE I’ve been fortunate. I practice law. I make movies. I write about both. I took up my pen and started writing a film column for The Clarion-Ledger, a Gannett-owned newspaper, back in the late 90s, when I moved from Chicago, Illinois, to Jackson, Mississippi. (It was like a Johnny Cash song… “Yeah, I’m going to Jackson. Look out Jackson Town….”) I then turned my pen to writing for The Jackson Free Press, an indie weekly newspaper, which provided me opportunities to write about indie films and interesting people. I threw down the pen, as well as stopped my public radio movie reviews and the television segment I had for an ABC affiliate, when I moved three years ago from Jackson to Nashville to head Butler Snow’s Entertainment and Media Industry Group.
