Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent 1. Brad Renfro, Skeet Ulrich, Axl Rose, Leif Garrett—I’m listing those things or people I find immediately identifiable in this Hawkins painting of 2017 that I’m looking at in a fairly hi-res digital reproduction, while sitting under a canopy in the noonday sun of Cornino, clear across the entire island of Sicily from Taormina— two different Morandi still lifes (at the top and near the bottom of the painting), numerous b/w reproductions of various Greco-Roman and/or Greco-Roman-like statuary (a few Hercules-es, some hermaphrodites), a vivid pink and yellow de Kooning, Richard Lindner’s Ice (1966), a particular guy with a prominent red kanji or ideogram tattoo on his left pectoral whose name it kills me I can’t recall at the moment and with/by whom Hawkins was obsessed/distracted for a year or more, a few Japanese male models ditto (i.e., the artist was obsessed/distracted with/by them, too, and it kills me I can’t think of their names [not Daisuke Ueda, not Seijo, not Osamu Mukai]), an Egon Schiele self-portrait (?), perhaps a bit of a Rudolf Schwarzkogler perf, Lon Chaney (maybe Bela Lugosi) on an elaborate Hollywood-set staircase as Dracula. Walking down an ersatz West Village street, Tom Cruise has fallen into daydreaming again, triggered by a man and woman kissing deeply in front of a gaudy shop (windows trimmed in neon, lace, Christmas lights); he flashes on Nicole and her fantasy naval officer going at it: this time she’s almost naked, his strong hand fingers her pussy.

Abington Senior High School, Abington, PA, 19001 January 2020 Decade in Review! With the decade coming to a close a few weeks ago, the editorial staff decided that we should fl ashback to the ideas and moments that shaped the decade. As we adjust to life in the new “roaring twenties,” here is a breakdown of the most prominent events of each year from the past decade. 2010: On January 12, an earthquake registering a magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Haiti, causing about 250,000 deaths and 300,000 injuries. On March 23, the Aff ordable Care Act is signed into law by Barack Obama. Commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” it was considered one of the most extensive health care reform acts since Medicare, which was passed in 1965. On April 20, a Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded over the Gulf of Mexico. Killing eleven people, it is considered one of the worst oil spills in history and the largest in US waters. On July 25, Wikileaks, an organization that allows people to anonymously leak classifi ed information, released more than 90,000 documents related to the Afghanistan War. It is oft en referred to as the largest leak of classifi ed information since the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War. Th e New Orleans Saints won their fi rst Super Bowl since Hurricane Katrina, LeBron James made his way to Miami, Kobe Bryant won his fi nal title, and Butler went on a Cinderella run to the NCAA Championship. Th e year fi ttingly set the tone for a decade of player empowerment and underdog victories.

Then & Now: The Relevance of Tennessee Williams for the 21st- Century Actress Marcie Danae Bealer Honors Thesis Ouachita Baptist University Spring 2009 Bealer 2 Finding a place to begin, discussing the role Tennessee Williams has played in the American Theatre is a daunting task. As a playwright Williams has "sustained dramatic power," which allow him to continue to be a large part of American Theatre, from small theatre groups to actor's workshops across the country. Williams holds a central location in the history of American Theatre (Roudane 1). Williams's impact is evidenced in that "there is no actress on earth who will not testify that Williams created the best women characters in the modem theatre" (Benedict, par 1). According to Gore Vidal, "it is widely believed that since Tennessee Williams liked to have sex with men (true), he hated women (untrue); as a result his women characters are thought to be malicious creatures, designed to subvert and destroy godly straightness" (Benedict, par.

  • Independent Mad-Scientist Secret Society Mockumentaries for Ages 11 to 12
8/15/2019 How Netflix Reverse-Engineered Hollywood - The Atlantic TECHNOLOGY How Netflix Reverse-Engineered Hollywood To understand how people look for movies, the video service created 76,897 micro-genres. We took the genre descriptions, broke them down to their key words … and built our own new-genre generator. ALEXIS C. MADRIGAL JAN 2, 2014 The Atlantic's Netflix-Genre Generator Independent Mad-Scientist Secret Society Mockumentaries For Ages 11 to 12 CREATE A GENRE: Gonzo (ultraniche genres) Hollywood (film-making cliches) Netflix (mimicking their style) If you use Netflix, you've probably wondered about the specific genres that it suggests to you. Some of them just seem so specific that it's absurd. Emotional Fight-the-System Documentaries? Period Pieces About Royalty Based on Real Life? Foreign Satanic Stories from the 1980s? If Netflix can show such tiny slices of cinema to any given user, and they have 40 million users, how vast did their set of "personalized genres" need to be to describe the entire Hollywood universe? This idle wonder turned to rabid fascination when I realized that I could capture each and every microgenre that Netflix's algorithm has ever created. Through a combination of elbow grease and spam-level repetition, we discovered that Netflix possesses not several hundred genres, or even several thousand, but 76,897 unique ways to describe types of movies. There are so many that just loading, copying, and pasting all of them took the little script I wrote more than 20 hours. We've now spent several weeks understanding, analyzing, and reverse-engineering how Netflix's vocabulary and grammar work.
