CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract This essay is a re-viewing of Breaker Morant in the contexts of New Australian Cinema, the Boer War, Australian Federation, the genre of the military courtroom drama, and the directing career of Bruce Beresford. The author argues that the film is no simple platitudinous melodrama about military injustice—as it is still widely regarded by many—but instead a sterling dramatization of one of the most controversial episodes in Australian colonial history. The author argues, further, that Breaker Morant is also a sterling instance of “telescoping,” in which the film’s action, set in the past, is intended as a comment upon the world of the present—the present in this case being that of a twentieth-century guerrilla war known as the Vietnam “conflict.” Keywords: Breaker Morant; Bruce Beresford; New Australian Cinema; Boer War; Australian Federation; military courtroom drama. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

    HPG and Hot3D are normally about the latest and greatest hardware. This isn’t that – this is about some hardware from before NVIDIA started calling their products GPUs. Why is this being presented at HPG? In many recent conferences, someone has presented a good rendering technique, and I’ve gone up and said it was interesting, but did they know we did it some years before? An obviously they didn’t, because we didn’t publish it. We can’t be alone in this (although others might not actually tell the presenters), so this is a call for people to describe old technology as the patents start expiring and people stop caring about protecting the IP. ART was founded in Cambridge, England in 1995, based on Adrian Wrigley’s 1994 PhD thesis in the Rainbow Graphics Group in the computer laboratory. (See http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/manuscripts-university- archives/subject-guides/theses-dissertations-and-1 for information on ordering the thesis; it does not appear to be online. The corresponding patent is available at https://patents.google.com/patent/US5933146A/en.)     ‘GOODNIGHT FOR JUSTICE: QUEEN OF HEARTS’ PRODUCTION BIOS LUKE PERRY (Executive Producer) – In 1989, Luke Perry was chosen for a starring role on the internationally popular television series “Beverly Hills 90210,” in which he portrayed the brooding but sensitive Dylan McCay. The highly-rated program won a Golden Globe Award for Best Dramatic Television series in 1991. Perry made his feature film debut in a starring role in “8 Seconds,” the remarkable account of champion bull rider Lane Frost, which he co-produced. His serious devotion to the inspirational legend of Lane Frost led him to train vigorously for 18 months in order to master the techniques of bull riding and to be able to perform many of his own stunts during production. Other film credits include Columbia’s “Fifth Element”, directed by Luc Besson, “Riot for Showtime,” “Normal Life,” “American Strays” and “The Florentine,” in which he co-starred with Chris Penn, Jim Belushi, Michael Madsen and Mary Stuart Masterson. Perry made his debut on Broadway in the critically acclaimed musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where he portrayed Brad, the character originally played by Barry Bostwick in the cult film classic. In 2004, Perry appeared onstage in London opposite Allyson Hannigan in When Harry Met Sally. Not one to be typecast because of his work on “90210,” Perry’s television credits include a myriad of roles, including a lead in the NBC drama “Windfall,” HBO’s “John From Cincinnati,” starring for two seasons on “Jeremiah,” the Showtime Network sci-fi series, a multi-episode arc on HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Oz,” in which he portrayed a televangelist convicted of fraud, as well as roles in Hallmark Channel productions “Johnson County War,” “Supernova,” “A Gunfighter’s Pledge” and “Angel and the Badman.” Perry starred in “Goodnight for Justice,” Hallmark Movie Channel’s highest rated movie of all time.
