Subaltern merujuk kepada pihak yang berposisi inferior dan tunduk kepada pihak dari kelas berkuasa. Pihak subaltern tidak memiliki kemampuan untuk bersuara. Permasalahan tersebut dapat ditemukan dalam novel R.A. Moerhia: Peringetan Medan 1929—1933 karya Njoo Cheong Seng. Penelitian ini membahas subalternitas perempuan bumiputra pada masa Hindia Belanda dan berbagai bentuk penindasan yang dialami dalam novel R.A. Moerhia: Peringetan Medan 1929—1933 karya Njoo Cheong Seng melalui teori subaltern Spivak dengan metode deskriptif analitis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan terdapat penindasan terhadap perempuan bumiputra sebagai pihak subaltern. Bentuk penindasan tersebut seperti ketidaksetaraan posisi yang menempatkan perempuan bumiputra sebagai nyai serta pelekatan stereotip buruk yang bersifat selayaknya barang, materialistis, dan digambarkan suka menggunakan hal irasional, misalnya sihir. Kata kunci: perempuan, bumiputra, subaltern, R.A. Moerhia ABSTRACT During the Dutch East Indies period, Indigenous women had an immense amount of oppression that classified them as the subalterns. Subaltern refers to people that is inferior and submits to people from the dominant class. The subalterns do not have the right to voice their opinions. Armijn Pane memandang soal itu integral dengan lapangan-lapang- an kehidupan lainnja, karena menurut pendapatnja, film bukanlah sadja merupakan suatu hasil kesenian, melainkan djuga mendjadi hasil suatu industri. Sebagai hasil kesenian, film itu mendjadi penggabung bermatjam- matjam kesenian lainnja, serta djuga usaha karang-mengarang. Da- lam bentuknja sebagai hasil industri, film terpaut kepada soal-soal ekonomi dan keuangan, serta kepada soal perdagangan ataupun peredaran dan pertundjukan. Lain dari pada itu, film dia pandang sebagai suatu tehnik jang diperoleh dari dunia Barat, karena itu seolah-olah tanaman asing jang ditumbuhkan kepada bumi Indonesia, sebab itu djuga tum- buhnja banjak bergantung kepada ketjintaan dan perhatian si punja kebun. 10 Malang mignon Cultural expressions of the Chinese, 1940-1960 Melani Budianta Malang, a hilly resort town in East Java, was from the 1950s to the 1960s a city alive with arts and cultural performances.1 Born in the 1950s and raised in a peranakan (culturally assimilated Chinese) culture that nurtured the taste for traditional dances and theatre, my three sisters and I were avid consumers of, and sometimes ama- teur participants in, the city’s cultural festivities.2 My father, as a board member of the Malang branch of an association of cigarette companies (Gabungan Perusahaan Rokok or GAPERO), often got free tickets to the best shows in town.3 Cigarette companies – along with other businesses owned by the Chinese – were regular patrons of such activities. There was a rich variety from which to choose, from our most favourite wayang orang Ang Hien Hoo, traditional Javanese theatre owned and played by the peranakan Chinese, to ludruk (a comic popular theatre form from East Java) and the Chi- nese puppet shows at the Malang Chinese temple. Modern and traditional dances from all parts of Indonesia, as well as ballet and folk dances from many countries were performed in cultural nights sponsored by the many competing political parties and cultural organizations. Schuyler Music This dissertation is intended as an ethnomusicological contribution to the history of music and media in Indonesia. It deals with topics and resources that have never been systematically examined for this region: gramophone records and radio broadcasting from the years before World War II, the last years of Dutch colonial control. The gramophone records are our only documentation of the sound of Indonesian music in the years before World War II. This dissertation tries to identify (and to some extent provide) the information one needs in order to understand the records and, by extension, stylistic trends during the pre-war period. Ultimately it is meant as an argument for the importance of making use of historical recordings and discography in ethnomusicology.
