Andrew N. Weintraub. Dangdut Stories: A Social and Musical History of Indonesia's Most Popular Music. New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2010. Photographs, musical notation, glossary, bibliography, index. 258+ pp. R. Anderson Sutton At last, a book on dangdut, and an excellent one. It is hard to imagine that anyone with experience in Indonesia over the past thirty-five years could be unaware of dangdut and its pervasive presence in the Indonesian soundscape. The importance of this music was first recognized in the international scholarly world by William Frederick in his landmark article on Rhoma Irama in the pages of this journal almost thirty years ago.1 Other scholars have devoted chapters to dangdut,2 but it is only with this meticulously researched and engagingly written book-length study by Andrew Weintraub that we have the important combination of perspectives—historical, musicological, sociological, gender, and media/cultural studies—that this rich and multifaceted form of expression deserves. Weintraub offers this highly informative study under the rubric of "dangdut stories," modestly pointing to the "incomplete and selective" nature of the stories he tells. But what he has accomplished is nothing short of a tour de force, giving us a very readable history of this genre, and untangling much about its diverse origins and the multiplicity of paths it has taken into the first decade of the twenty-first century. Near the outset, following three telling vignettes of dangdut events he observed, Weintraub explains that the book is a "musical and social history of dangdut within a range of broader narratives about class, gender, ethnicity, and nation in post independence Indonesia" (p.

  • Gaining Insight Into Cultural Geography Through the Study of Musical Instruments
UC Irvine Journal for Learning through the Arts Title Gaining Insight into Cultural Geography through the Study of Musical Instruments Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/10c4v90c Journal Journal for Learning through the Arts, 6(1) Author Khalil, Alexander K Publication Date 2010 DOI 10.21977/D96110016 eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Khalil: Gaining Insight into Cultural Geography through the Study of Musical Instruments Geographic literacy enables students to comprehend the delicate balance between the human and physical elements that bind people to this planet. Knowledge of geography is a key component in understanding—and acting effectively in—our increasingly interconnected world. Yet, American youth struggle with basic geographic facts. Confronted with an unlabeled world map, 58 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds living in the United States cannot locate Japan; 65 percent cannot find France; 29 percent cannot locate the Pacific Ocean (Roper, 2006). Complaints about the lack of geographic literacy among American students are not new. Lucy Sprague Mitchell (1991) described the children of the 1930’s as living in a world of disconnected “end products.” This “disconnect” has become more apparent in our own era, when students routinely arrive at school wearing clothes stitched by workers who live in countries the students cannot find on a map. This level of ignorance takes on a special poignancy at the present time: young Americans have been fighting in Iraq since 2003, yet only 37% of their peers in the U.S. can even find Iraq on a map (Roper, 2006). In an era when high-stakes testing has fixed the media spotlight on student achievement in language arts and math, finding time to teach geography takes ingenuity.

  • Musical Practice of Keronchong
ARTICLE Musical practice of Keronchong Keronchong is believed to have originated in 16 th century Portuguese music of the Portuguese colonies in the Moluccas and Batavia while in Malaysia (and Malaya) keronchong is mainly associated with practice in Malacca. Malaysian keronchong is thought to be derived from Javanese keronchong. Chopyak 1 informs us it is not so much a musical form as it is a style of performance. Therefore he points out that an asli langgam song becomes a keronchong langgam song when performed in a keronchong style on keronchong instruments. This is evident in Ernst Heins’ entry on keroncong in Groves where typical instrumentation of the ensemble would comprise two kroncong (small guitars), among other instruments. Craig Lockard goes on to describe how keroncong orchestras and recordings attracted both Malay and Chinese communities with a sensuous Portuguese-Indonesian musical blend originating in Java while dondang sayang either produced or consumed in some popularity in Melaka and western Johor seemed to bear resemblance to kroncong. In contradistinction however, Dondang Sayang , according to Philip L. Thomas,2 combined the verbal art of complex poetry or pantun as it was known locally, with orchestral accompaniment. The pantuns were highly stylised repartee and required considerable effort to excel in. Lockard also referred to Popular Malay ensembles known as orkes melayu which he argues as being heavily influenced by Middle Eastern and Indian musical styles were seen to be popular on the West coast while ghazal was

  • Malay Gamelan: Approaches of Music Learning Through Community Music
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences 2017, Vol. 7, No. 11 ISSN: 2222-6990 Malay Gamelan: Approaches of music learning through Community Music Wong Huey Yi @ Colleen Wong Department of Music and Music Education, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia. Christine Augustine Department of Music and Music Education, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia. DOI: 10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i11/3562 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.6007/IJARBSS/v7-i11/3562 Abstract This paper looked into the role of Rhythm in Bronze (RiB), a local music group in Malaysia, in community music work practices that uses Malay gamelan as the medium. The research delved into the different aspects of the approaches used to enhance music learning through community music; particularly the activities used and how they relate to Vygotsky’s theory of socialization in learning. Community music gathers people from different backgrounds. Experiences and knowledge shared helps the community through the development in terms of personal growth, self- esteem and self-confidence. These terms are just some of the aspects that community music promotes, apart from music making. Along the process of community music, creativity and expression are important in music making, as this will further develop creative thinking skills among musicians. Qualitative approaches such as observation, interview, and group’s past work were used in this research to gather information and data on how music has been taught to children through community music. Social interaction has certainly shown a big role in developing children thinking and perceptions through the activities implemented.
