Jazz masterClark Terry , a frequent visitor to CPFJ events, died on February 21st. Clark was a great (Newsletter) entertainer as well as a great musician and was always thinking of ways to draw the audience into the Tonya Mowery music that he loved. Fifteen years ago or so, Marty Ashby invited me to play at the Manchester (Sectretary) Craftsman's Guild in Pittsburgh with an all-star group that included Clark Terry, Paquito D'Rivera, Robert Pugliese Louie Bellson, Rufus Reid, and Roger Humphries Sr. My wife, Andrea, and daughter, Katie, were in (Fund Raising) attendance for the three days, five shows gig. Clark found out that daughter Katie was having her Mark Swartzbaugh birthday that weekend and being the showman that he was, he made sure that she was in attendance for (Marketing) every show and brought her up in the middle of each set to have her sit on his lap and sing Happy Keith Thomas Birthday to her - five times! It was the most memorable birthday weekend of her young life and another (Vice President - & Concessions) example of a wise old pro making use of every opportunity to involve people emotionally with the music. Amy Walizer Clark was always a shining example of the consummate musician/entertainer/educator - sharing joy and (Treasurer) showing us the way....I will always remember his example and kindness. Tim Warfield . We congratulateKirk Reese on his recent trio CD,Impressions, featuring Steve Meashey & Jeff Stabley. (Music) . This wonderful recording amply demonstrates Kirk’s growth as a pianist and artist and we highly Youth Band Director: recommend you find a copy - it is available for download from iTunes or CDBaby and they will be Ron Waters available at CPFJ events at our concession tables. On Tues, 4/14 at 8pm, Kirk will give a Faculty Recital . at the High Center Recital Hall, Messiah College which is also the CD release event. TAMMY SCHEFFER - voice Born in Belgium, raised in Israel and currently residing in Brooklyn, vocalist and composer Tammy Scheffer’s music combines influences of contemporary jazz with her own expressive voice and a strong sense of melody. Growing up in a musical family, Tammy was first introduced to jazz music in high school, and started performing professionally at the age of 18. Influenced and encouraged by the instrumentalists she worked with, she absorbed their approach to improvisation and composition and embraced the freedom of instrumental jazz. Later she attended Rimon School of Jazz, and was captivated by the contemporary jazz sound for the first time. Inspired to search for her own personal voice, Tammy decided to move to the United States and look for new musical challenges. She won a scholarship to New England Conservatory, where she studied with Jerry Bergonzi, Jerry Leake and Dominique Eade. In 2008 she was chosen to participate in the exclusive Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead workshop. She recently graduated from New England with honors, and moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she teaches in her private studio and work towards a debut CD. Recently Tammy participated in Michael Feinberg’s latest album, “Evil Genius”, and in saxophonist Brian Hogans’ album, to be released by Turnaround Records. In recent years she worked with an expanding circle of musicians, including Jeff Berlin, Kevin Mahogany, Aaron Goldberg, Anat Fort, Sam Barsh, Luques Curtis and Obed Calvaire. Tammy is a recipient of a scholarship from the America- Israel Cultural Foundation.

The final Spring Series Concert this season will feature vibraphonist Steve Nelson and his Quartet. Steve began his career during the seventies, in his hometown of Pittsburgh, following the straight ahead path blazed by his first major influence, Milt Jackson. After a year with guitarist Grant Green he was playing and recording with his Rutgers professors James Spaulding and Kenny Barron, before landing a spot in David "Fathead” Newman's quintet. Throughout the eighties Nelson was the vibist of choice among some of his generation's most talented jazz artists, including Bobby Watson, Curtis Lundy, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, Geoffrey Keezer and Lewis Nash, developing a harmonically open sound, influenced by the innovations of Bobby Hutcherson. These experiences led him to a spot in Dave Holland's award winning band and nine recordings. Ron Waters is the Director for theCPFJ Youth Band . There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP @ MESSIAH COLLEGE JUNE 17-19, 2015
