Socialization and Politization through Fairy Tales Jack Zipes Over 170 years ago the Brothers Grimm began collecting original folk tales in Germany and stylized them into potent literary fairy tales. Since then these tales have exercised a pro- found influence on children and adults alike throughout the western world. Indeed, whatever form fairy tales in general have taken since the original publication of the Grimms' nar- ratives in 1812, the Brothers Grimm have been continually looking over our shoulders and making their presence felt. For most people this has not been so disturbing. However, during the last 15 years there has been a growing radical trend to over- throw the Grimms' benevolent rule in fairy-tale land by writers who believe that the Grimms' stories contribute to the creation of a false consciousness and reinforce an authoritarian sociali- zation process. This trend has appropriately been set by writers in the very homeland of the Grimms where literary revolutions have always been more common than real political ones.1 West German writers2 and critics have come to

    Voyeurism, Humor and Fairy-Tales LaCaille 1 Voyeurism, Humor and Fairy-Tales: A Closer look at Snow White and her Seven Dwarves Have you ever thought about how a work of art could change over time? Have you ever wondered why it is so easy for us to relate to a fairy tale and/or film? Have you questioned why what makes us laugh, makes us laugh or why we see what we see? I. Introduction: Snow White is the tale of life that was almost lost. The story is ultimately dark and twisted dealing with jealousy and death yet also uplifting with thoughts of beauty and love. Most fairy-tales have that affect. They “reflect typical, generally human situations and fates1” allowing us, the viewer and/or reader, to relate to the story and become the character through what Mulvey and Freud would describe as ego libido2. A fairy-tale is therefore dark and twisted because humans are inherently evil. Most people grow jealous at times and wish evil upon an- other. It is the job of the fairy-tale to exaggerate our horror, sorrow, and evil to make the end re- sult greater and happier. Many tales such as Snow White, though dealing with a large theme such as life almost lost, need some sort of outside source to keep the audience intrigued and buying into the story. Most people will not want to watch a film or read a story that is, though relative to our lives, ultimately depressing. Humor is this cohesive effect3. Though you may not think of Snow White as a necessarily humorous film, there is small bits and quirks of humor laid throughout the film, even in the most serious versions of this fairy-tale that films have tried to portray.

    Notes Introduction: Fairy Tale Films, Old Tales with a New Spin 1. In terms of terminology, ‘folk tales’ are the orally distributed narratives disseminated in ‘premodern’ times, and ‘fairy tales’ their literary equiva- lent, which often utilise related themes, albeit frequently altered. The term ‘ wonder tale’ was favoured by Vladimir Propp and used to encompass both forms. The general absence of any fairies has created something of a mis- nomer yet ‘fairy tale’ is so commonly used it is unlikely to be replaced. An element of magic is often involved, although not guaranteed, particularly in many cinematic treatments, as we shall see. 2. Each show explores fairy tale features from a contemporary perspective. In Grimm a modern-day detective attempts to solve crimes based on tales from the brothers Grimm (initially) while additionally exploring his mythical ancestry. Once Upon a Time follows another detective (a female bounty hunter in this case) who takes up residence in Storybrooke, a town populated with fairy tale characters and ruled by an evil Queen called Regina. The heroine seeks to reclaim her son from Regina and break the curse that prevents resi- dents realising who they truly are. Sleepy Hollow pushes the detective prem- ise to an absurd limit in resurrecting Ichabod Crane and having him work alongside a modern-day detective investigating cult activity in the area. (Its creators, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, made a name for themselves with Hercules – which treats mythical figures with similar irreverence – and also worked on Lost, which the series references). Beauty and the Beast is based on another cult series (Ron Koslow’s 1980s CBS series of the same name) in which a male/female duo work together to solve crimes, combining procedural fea- tures with mythical elements.

It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Kistner University of Washington Abstract Organizing Knowledge: Comparative Structures of Intersubjectivity in Nineteenth-Century Historical Dictionaries Kelly Kistner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Gary G. Hamilton Sociology Between 1838 and 1857 language scholars throughout Europe were inspired to create a new kind of dictionary. Deemed historical dictionaries, their projects took an unprecedented leap in style and scale from earlier forms of lexicography. These lexicographers each sought to compile historical inventories of their national languages and were inspired by the new scientific approach of comparative philology. For them, this science promised a means to illuminate general processes of social change and variation, as well as the linguistic foundations for cultural and national unity. This study examines two such projects: The German Dictionary, Deutsches Worterbuch, of the Grimm Brothers, and what became the Oxford English Dictionary. Both works utilized collaborative models of large-scale, long-term production, yet the content of the dictionaries would differ in remarkable ways. The German dictionary would be characterized by its lack of definitions of meaning, its eclectic treatment of entries, rich analytical prose, and self- referential discourse; whereas the English dictionary would feature succinct, standardized, and impersonal entries. Using primary source materials, this research investigates why the dictionaries came to differ.

    DOWNSEND TIMES 14 June 2019 A message from the Headmaster Despite the appalling weather’s best efforts, Downsend pupils have dodged the showers and continued to brighten our days, no more so than at Downsend Rocks on Tuesday night. Our 4 Rock Bands, containing almost fifty 8-13 year olds, kept the packed audience enthralled with their confidence, talent and teamwork. We all recognised favourite songs from our own playlists and the only sadness was when the concert had to end. £300 was raised for the school charity, The Children’s Trust, to end the evening on a high note. With Year 3 having enjoyed their residential night under canvas at Downsend on Friday, and the Year 5s currently undertaking their PGL trip as I write, the school will feel somewhat more empty next week, with the Upper School attending their own residential trips. This has given us the opportunity to start work on the Summer Refurbishments. A reminder that this is the conversion of the Library and IT Suites into a Learning Resource Centre, along with the creation of a new Food Technology Facility, STEAM Space and Learning Support/ELSA Room. Over the weekend, these spaces will be cordoned off to facilitate the work, whilst the parking spaces around the bend near the Cedar Block and Extended Day playground, will be coned off for use by the contractors. Please refer to the message below, from the Business Manager, for more details. Thank you for your patience and understanding; I assure you it will be all worth it in September!
