Introduction The Valais is the third-largest canton of Switzerland covering 2016 square miles of which only 1107 are productive. It is also a world of its own: it received its name "the valley" from the 100 mile long valley of the Rhone River which has its source above the small town of Gletsch below the highest point of the Furka pass. This main valley is flanked on the north and south side by many of the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps. The northern side toward the Canton of Bern is forbiddingly steep, and the Lotschental and the valley leading to the Leukerbad are the only valleys which branch off on this side while many long and deep valleys branch off on the southern side, e.g.

Using Oral History and Forest Management Plans to Reconstruct Traditional Non-Timber Forest Uses in the Swiss Rhone Valley (Valais) Since the Late Nineteenth Century URS GIMMI AND MATTHIAS BÜRGI Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL Department Landscape Section Nature Protection and Historical Ecology Zürcherstrasse 111, CH-8903 Birmensdorf, Switzerland ABSTRACT Changes in forest use are considered as a potential key driver for recently observed changing forest dynamics in the pine forest belt of the upper Rhone valley (Canton of Valais, Switzerland). In this region, traditional non-timber forest uses, such as forest litter harvesting and wood pasture, were practised until the second half of the twentieth century. The practice of traditional non-timber forest uses led to specific environmental conditions which favoured pine as a pioneer species. With the abandonment of these practices the pine was subjected to increased competition and largely replaced by deciduous trees.

Aus diesen Tälern stammen auch die Walser, die sich während des Spätmittelalters ostwärts über weite Teile der Alpen bis nach Süddeutschland ausbreiteten. Weissmiesgruppe Mischabelgruppe Nach Saas Grund Nach Zermatt und Saas Fee Stalden Visp Der mächtigste Nebenfluss der Rhone in der Schweiz ist die Vispa. Sie mündet bei der Industriestadt Visp ohne Mündungsstufe in die Rhone. Sowohl die Saaser Vispa als auch die Matter Vispa sind von mächtigen Viertausendern umgeben, deren Gletscher das Schmelzwasser liefern. Aufnahmestandort Wiwannihorn oberhalb Ausserberg Hier sind wir mitten in der Stadt Visp. Über den Häusern erhebt sich im Süden schon das Balfrinhorn, der nördlichste Gipfel der Mischabelgruppe. In den Visper- tälern sind die Gegensätze ausserordentlich gross zwischen warmen Rebhängen und eisigen Viertausendern, zwischen extremer Trockenheit und reissenden Flüssen, zwischen der guten alten Zeit und der modernen Tourismusindustrie. Im untersten Talabschnitt der Vispa herrscht Weinbau vor. Hier finden wir auf beiden Talseiten die höchst gelegenen Weinberge Europas bis in Höhen um 1000 m.

Settlement expansion, the intensification of agricultural land-use practices, and farmland abandonment result in a decline of natural and semi-natural habitats and the related ecosystem services (ES). In this context, spatial planning has emerged as a key instrument for the management of ES provision. To better understand trade-offs and interactions between settlement growth and ES provision in a spatially explicit manner, we present a new modelling framework coupling an agent-based, agro-economic optimization model and a cellular-automata-based settlement growth model.
