" Purpose of Thesis This project has two components: a written discussion of the music of the Dichterliebe, and the lives of the composer Robert Schumann and the poet Heinrich Heine; and an audio tape of my performance of the Dichterliebe. The performance was the culmination of my study of the Dichterliebe, in particular, and of my voice studies, in general. Through the performance, I set out to share the wonderful music and poetry of the Dichterliebe as well as share my musical and vocal growth over the past four years. The written portion of the project was undertaken to satisfy my personal curiosity of the men who wrote the music and the poetry of the Dichterliebe. A study of the music without knowing the man who composed it or the man who wrote the words would be only half complete at best. Likewise, a study of the men and not the music would also be incomplete. That is why I included both venues of learning and experiencing in this project; and that is why I have included an audio tape of the performance with this written report. Nach Heine und Goethe kamen noch viele anderen, die die Ruhe und Authentizität der Natur im Harz aufgesucht haben. Diese Masterarbeit hat versucht zu deuten, inwiefern diese heutigen Wanderer noch zum gleichen Ziel wandern, als die Wanderer um 1800. Gründe um während der Periode der Romantik wandern zu gehen, waren die Möglichkeit zur Reflektion, die Suche nach Authentizität in der Natur, eine Flucht aus der Gesellschaft, Ich-Findung und das Erfahren der Natur. Diese Konzepte stehen im Zentrum dieser Masterarbeit und wurden versucht bei den Wanderern heutzutage zurückzufinden. Zur Deutung dieser Konzepte wurden zwei Beispielstexte, die sich auf dem Wandern im Harz beziehen, analysiert: Die Harzreise2 von Heinrich Heine und Harzreise im Winter3 von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Die Forschung zur heutiges Wandern im Harz wurde anhand einer Analyse von Wanderblogs durchgeführt. Vier verschiedenen Blogs mit insgesamt achtzehn Beiträgen wurden analysiert auf Referenzen, implizit oder explizit, zu einer romantischen Naturerfahrung, Reflektion, Ich-Findung, Suche nach Authentizität und Eskapismus während der Wanderung. Vielen von diesen Konzepten wurden sowohl in den Texten von Heine und Goethe, als auch in den Blogs zurückgefunden. -

Robert Schumann was a German composer and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. He had been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing. Schumann's published compositions were written exclusively for the piano until 1840; he later composed works for piano and orchestra; many Lieder (songs for voice and piano); four symphonies; an opera; and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. -

Abstract: This thesis will explore Heinrich Heine’s engagement with the political society of the Vormärz period of German literature and society through the perspective of Heine’s conscious construction and perception of Self. By exploring Heine’s method of political engagement, it will contemplate Heine’s self-presentation of a liminal identity as a critical method akin to that of the literary trickster archetype, arguing that Heine has taken on the role of a modernized jester [Narr]. This thesis will further contemplate how this alignment facilitated and effectuated his pursuit of political liberty, as well as his criticism of the socio-political status quo of the Restoration. Beginning with a consideration of Heine’s relation to the literary forms of poetry, irony, and satire as critical method, this thesis will develop the connection between Heine’s use of these literary traditions and his implementation of a picaresque discourse. -

Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris. <b>Childhood and Youth</b> Heine was born in Düsseldorf, Rhineland, into a Jewish family. He was called "Harry" as a child, but after his baptism in 1825 he became "Heinrich". Heine's father, Samson Heine (1764–1828), was a textile merchant. His mother Peira (known as "Betty"), née van Geldern (1771–1859), was the daughter of a physician. Heinrich was the eldest of the four children; his siblings were Charlotte, Gustav - who later became Baron Heine-Geldern and publisher of the Viennese newspaper Das Fremdenblatt - and Maximilian, later a physician in Saint Petersburg. Düsseldorf was then a small town with a population of around 16,000. The Revolution in neighbouring France and the subsequent Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars which involved Germany meant that Düsseldorf had a complicated political history during Heine's childhood. It had been the capital of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg but at the time of his birth it was under French occupation. -

His father was a tradesman who had benefitted during the French occupation by the new prospects this opened for German Jews. His father's business would fail, however, and Harry would be sent to Hamburg, where a rich banker uncle named Salomon would attempt without success to inject him into a commercial trajectory. He would study at the universities of Bonn, Berlin, and Göttingen but would develop more interest in literature than in law. (An accomplice known as “Captain Lightfoot” had been able to escape, and would reside for many years incognito in Brattleboro, Vermont, not dying until 1835.) H. Heine (the “H” at this point still stood for “Harry” rather than “Heinrich”) made his debut as a poet with GEDICHTE VON H. HEINE (Berlin: in der Maurerfchen Buchhandlung, 1822; this included one of his most famous poems “Zwei Grenadiere” which reflected his admiration for Napoléon Bonaparte).
