PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA PREFACE It is right and fittingthat a word of tribute be expressed here in memory of the late Dr. Hugo Bieber, the author of this book. Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1883, he became a historian of Ger man literature and author of a number of works in this field; he was also the literary director of a German book guild. The trans formation of Germany in 1933, from the home of culture to the citadel of Nazism, compelled him to go to France; and in 1940 he came to the United States. Since he had made a special study of Heinrich Heine and had written a number of books on the subject, it was natural for the Jewish Publication Society to turn to him when it decided to prepare a volume on the German poet. -

" Purpose of Thesis This project has two components: a written discussion of the music of the Dichterliebe, and the lives of the composer Robert Schumann and the poet Heinrich Heine; and an audio tape of my performance of the Dichterliebe. The performance was the culmination of my study of the Dichterliebe, in particular, and of my voice studies, in general. Through the performance, I set out to share the wonderful music and poetry of the Dichterliebe as well as share my musical and vocal growth over the past four years. The written portion of the project was undertaken to satisfy my personal curiosity of the men who wrote the music and the poetry of the Dichterliebe. A study of the music without knowing the man who composed it or the man who wrote the words would be only half complete at best. Likewise, a study of the men and not the music would also be incomplete. That is why I included both venues of learning and experiencing in this project; and that is why I have included an audio tape of the performance with this written report. The University of Texas at Austin, 2004 Supervisor: Katherine Arens This dissertation tests Benedict Anderson’s thesis about the coherence of imagined communities by tracing how Galicia, as the heart of a Polish culture in the nineteenth century that would never be an independent nation state, emerged as an historical, cultural touchstone with present day significance for the people of Europe. After the three Partitions and Poland’s complete disappearance from political maps of Europe, substitute images of Poland were sought that could replace its lost kingdom with alternate forms of national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. Not the hereditary dynasty, not Prussia or Russia, but Galicia emerged as the imagined and representative center of a Polish culture without a state. This dissertation juxtaposes political realities with canonical literary texts that provide images of a cultural community among ethnic Germans and Poles sharing the border of Europe. -

In many performances and ensembles this leads to an investigation into the types of instruments or techniques of singing used in a given period, the number of performers employed, and other ensemble and technical concerns. Related to this concern for historical performance, but perhaps not as often considered, is the issue of the relationship between the original poem and a musical setting. -

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine Who he was born 13 December 1797 Year. Heinrich Heine was a German poet, writer. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of lieder (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose are distinguished by their satirical wit. He spent the last 25 years of his life in Paris. Heine's father, Samson Heine , was a textile merchant. His mother Peira (known as "Betty"), née van Geldern .Heinrich was the eldest of four children. He had a sister, Charlotte, and two brothers, Gustav Heine von Geldern and Maximilian, who became a physician in Saint Petersburg. Düsseldorf was then a small town. -
