Welfare Gains from the Variety GrowthI d’Artis Kancsa,c,∗, Damiaan Persynb,c,d aEuropean Commission DG Joint Research Centre, I-21027 Ispra Italy bEuropean Commission DG Joint Research Centre, E-41092 Seville, Spain cLICOS, University of Leuven, B-3000 Leuven, Belgium dVIVES, University of Leuven, B-3000 Leuven, Belgium Abstract We estimate the variety gains of trade in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania following the fall of the iron curtain more than a quarter of a century ago. We apply the methodology of Feenstra(1994); Broda and Weinstein(2006); Ardelean and Lugovskyy(2010) and Soderbery(2015) to domestic and international trade data for the period 1988-1997. Although, there was a decline in the number of local varieties during this period, an increase in the number of import varieties from the EU more than outweighed this decline. The increasing variety of imported goods from EU countries substantially lowered the cost of living, resulting in welfare gains to consumers that range from 0.73% in Latvia to 1.28% of GDP per year in Estonia. Keywords: Variety growth, welfare gains, trade integration, iron curtain. JEL code: C68, F12, F14, F17, R12, R23. January 31, 2019 IThe authors acknowledge helpful comments from Lucian Cernat, Marton Csillag, Dmitry Kulikov, Aleksandra Parteka, Giulia Santangelo, Jan Van Hove and participants of GTAP, EEA and BEA conferences in Dakar, Mannheim and Vilnius, as well as workshop participants at the University of Leuven and European Commission. We are grateful to Anson Soderbery for providing the hybrid LILM elasticity code, Smirnov Sergey Olegovich for granting access to data and Laila Ekharde for providing the necessary concordances.

  • PRODUCT INFORMATION CENTER APRIL 2013 Agenda
PRODUCT INFORMATION CENTER APRIL 2013 Agenda • In the spotlight • New references • New applications Air, oil, fuel, diesel filters Cabin fiters • Change of status Filters available whilst stock last Abandoned filters www.purflux.com Sogefi awarded for the quality of its catalogues In an increasingly competitive market, product communication has become the touchstone of a good aftermarket offer. By product communication, we are talking about all of the tools which allow our customers to identify quickly and correctly the required part numbers for all applications. Why ? As it enables us to work more efficiently and makes all of our jobs easier. Firstly, it increases the number of potential vehicles that can be equipped by reducing range gaps and secondly, it increases customer satisfaction by reducing errors and catalogue searches. From the recently renewed paper catalogues (where you can see the enhancements we have developed) to the updated electronic catalogues, we have focused all of our efforts on improving our product identification and vehicle mapping systems to the highest of standards. As evidence, Sogefi has just been reconfirmed as having the highest possible level of data certification by Tecdoc. This “A” grade has been scored to all of our Light vehicle brands and to our new Sogefi Pro Range for Truck and Buses which makes us even prouder. The Tecdoc assessment takes into consideration various parameters including data compliance, translations, etc. and has given Sogefi a score that far exceeds the industry average. Of course, we are very proud of this recognition but we see this more as a positive sign to carry on and intensify our efforts, as we know there is still a lot to be done.

The future of the past – Lada, Dacia and their like | News & Stories at Stylepark 07.12.10 21:35 Home Design Architecture Material News & Stories About 2010 2009 2008 2007 all December November October September August July June May April March February January all Browse: 189 of 637 The future of the past – Lada, Dacia and their like by Peter Sägesser | 28 November 2009 These days, cars currently being produced in the Western world, as well as those produced in Asia, are crammed full of electronics. Computers help us both to control the car and cope with the traffic. In these cars, we glide safely through the streets in interiors that are as comfortably furnished as our sitting rooms. All this makes them heavy and expensive. Even the change to electrical propulsion suffers - so far, at least - from the weight of the batteries and from the limitation on range. What future developments might lead to - especially in the so-called threshold countries - has been demonstrated by the Indian car manufacturers Tata with their "Nano", a budget car with Spartan levels of equipment. At the same time there is a whole bunch of examples from the former Eastern Block countries for a future that could well grow out of the past. Back to the roots of individual mobility Until the seventies and before marketing and lifestyle ever existed, cars were first and foremost about getting from A to B and about transporting things. Car drivers felt the speed, smelled the scent of the grass meadows and the stench of the lorries.
