We apply the methodology of Feenstra(1994); Broda and Weinstein(2006); Ardelean and Lugovskyy(2010) and Soderbery(2015) to domestic and international trade data for the period 1988-1997. Although, there was a decline in the number of local varieties during this period, an increase in the number of import varieties from the EU more than outweighed this decline. The increasing variety of imported goods from EU countries substantially lowered the cost of living, resulting in welfare gains to consumers that range from 0.73% in Latvia to 1.28% of GDP per year in Estonia. Supplement A: Treaties and Agreements TREATY OF FRIENDSHIP, CO-OPERATION AND MUTUAL ASSISTANCE BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF FINLAND AND THE UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS The President of the Republic of Finland and the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR; Desiring further to develop friendly relations between the Repulic of Finland and the USSR; being convinced that the strengthening of good neighbourhood relations and cooperation between the Republic of Finland and the USSR lies in the interest of both countries; considering Finland's desire to remain outside the conflicting interests of the Great Powers; and Expressing their firm endeavour to collaborate towards the maintenance of international peace and security in accordance with the aims and principles of the United Nations Organization; have for this purpose agreed to conclude the present Treaty and have appointed as their Plenipotentiaries: the President of the Republic of Finland: Mauna Pekkala, Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland; The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR: Vyacheslav Mihailovich Molotov, Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and Minister for Foreign Affairs, who, after exchange of their full powers, found in good and due form, have agreed on the following provisions: Article 1 In the eventuality of Finland, or the Soviet Union through Finnish territory, becoming the object of an armed attack by Germany or any State allied with the latter, Finland will, true to its obligations as an independent State, fight to repel the attack. By product communication, we are talking about all of the tools which allow our customers to identify quickly and correctly the required part numbers for all applications. Why ? As it enables us to work more efficiently and makes all of our jobs easier. Firstly, it increases the number of potential vehicles that can be equipped by reducing range gaps and secondly, it increases customer satisfaction by reducing errors and catalogue searches. From the recently renewed paper catalogues (where you can see the enhancements we have developed) to the updated electronic catalogues, we have focused all of our efforts on improving our product identification and vehicle mapping systems to the highest of standards. As evidence, Sogefi has just been reconfirmed as having the highest possible level of data certification by Tecdoc. This “A” grade has been scored to all of our Light vehicle brands and to our new Sogefi Pro Range for Truck and Buses which makes us even prouder. The Tecdoc assessment takes into consideration various parameters including data compliance, translations, etc. and has given Sogefi a score that far exceeds the industry average. Of course, we are very proud of this recognition but we see this more as a positive sign to carry on and intensify our efforts, as we know there is still a lot to be done. -

Between Business Interests and Ideological Marketing The USSR and the Cold War in Fiat Corporate Strategy, 1957–1972 ✣ Valentina Fava On 15 August 1966, the Fiat automotive company signed an agreement in Moscow with the Soviet government regarding the construction of the Volga Automobile Factory (VAZ) to manufacture Fiat cars. The plant began oper- ations in September 1970—one year later than originally planned—and was a highly automated facility that was able to produce 660,000 Fiat 124s per annum.1 More than half a century later, the image of Italian-Soviet partnership in building the giant automobile plant still arouses emotions and curiosity, as demonstrated by documentaries and preparations for the fiftieth anniversary 1. The model’s body and engine were modified to be better suited for Soviet roads and climatic condi- tions. The total cost of constructing the plant was estimated at $642 million in February 1966: $247 million (39 percent) was to be spent in Italy, about $55 million (8 percent) was to be spent in the United States, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland, and West Germany (but this percentage grew to such an extent that $50 million alone was expected to be spent in the United States), and $340 million (53 percent) was to be spent (it never was) on building plants or equipment in member-states of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. This estimate included neither consultancy fees for the technical designs of the factory and the car nor the transfer of know-how and assistance methods, nor did it budget for purchasing special materials or paying third parties’ commissions for patents or additional know-how.
