Read the Following Memoir and Answer the Questions in Sections A–D on Pages 2–3
Read the following memoir and answer the questions in sections A–D on pages 2–3. What empowered me [1] I grew up in Dharavi, a slum in the Indian city of Mumbai. I was like everyone else in the neighborhood—“aimless” and “hopeless”, as outsiders would call us. School wasn’t a big part of my life, yet sometimes I turned up at the school when I felt like it. [2] But things changed when I was 14. One day after school, I saw a bunch of people around 5 my age playing soccer in the streets nearby. They all wore T-shirts with “Magic Bus” printed on them. An older guy—maybe 10 years older than me—came up to me and asked, “Wanna join us?” I’d always wanted to try soccer but had never gotten the chance. I had assumed it was a boys’ sport. I gave it a go and fell in love with it instantly. [3] Each week, the volunteers—we called them “mentors”—played soccer with me and other 10 kids for a couple of hours in a field. After the game, the mentors talked with us, taught us how to communicate with others, and made sure everyone was eating healthily. I enjoyed the time with them a lot. Soon I became a volunteer and they let me lead weekly sessions in soccer. It finally felt like I was actually doing something with my life. I’d never been so happy and confident in my whole life. 15 [4] Two years ago, I was offered a paid job as a youth mentor in Magic Bus. -
