My dear sisters and brothers,

Have you ever noticed that when someone whispers something, that besides saying: “Huh,” or “What,” we tune in to really listen and try to understand what is being transmitted by the speaker? I would surmise that tiny whispering sounds may be the signs that we seek from our God. We look for direction from God. We look for the road direction signs from him.

When my mom would yell, I remember tuning her out. The noise hurt my ears. We always heard mom. Sometimes you might say, that we did not listen well. We expect God’s voice to come booming in with the message like trumpets blaring. However, gives us the model of God’s voice coming in whispers. If we get distracted or are not paying attention, we can miss God passing by. When an infant or innocent child smiles at us or gives us a hug or kiss, someone holds the door for us, or offers a helping hand, there is an opportunity to sense the presence of God. The answer may arrive in the words of a psalm, or in the unassuming example of sacrificial love we witness in another.

In our gospel story this Sunday, Peter walks on water, only because Jesus called him out of the boat. Peter was emboldened and got out of the boat. Peter began to feel the winds of doubt and began to sink. Have you ever had a sinking feeling, that sense that, “I am going down? All’s lost.” Just like Peter who kept focusing on Jesus, we can keep focused on Him and cry out, “Jesus, save me!” We know what it is to make that cry, we should also know what it means to respond to another’s cry of the same.

A Story: A school principal was cleaning out a storage closet in the school and found an old crucifix that was about four feet tall. The feet and hands had broken off the corpus. She was planning to have it buried in the parish cemetery but had a different idea.

Instead of disposing of the crucifix she asked the maintenance department to give it a good cleaning. She then hung it in the main vestibule at the entrance of the school where all the students, faculty and staff could see it. She placed a sign underneath the cross that read: “Will you be my hands and feet today?”

Pray today, as you read this, “Lord, help me to be your hands and feet today. Give me the grace to help another to hear your quiet whisper. Allow me to be there for someone, keeping them from sinking into the waters of doubt or despair.” And then, let me pay attention for those tiny whispering sounds. BE BOLD! BE CATHOLIC! BE ATTENTIVE! In Christ’s love, -- Fr Tim Wrozek
