My Dear Parishioners,

On this First Sunday of Lent, our liturgy calls us into the desert with Jesus who, for forty days “was put to the test.” We are reminded that there are times when we are all put to the test. This life contains trials. Our Lord’s trial in the wilderness is one that he was able to endure. In the end, he was able to triumph. We can learn Saturday, February 20—Saturday after from him if we are to successfully pass the tests of Ash Wednesday life. 9:00 Marta Pereira Vigil: February 20—First Sunday of When we look to Jesus, we see first and foremost a Lent man of prayer. FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Procedures for Sunday Mass: We began celebrating Sunday Mass with a congregation in church the weekend of July 4 -5. It is important that we all maintain proper social distancing. Until further notice, we will preserve the schedule of Saturday Evening Mass at 5:00PM. Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 8 AM and 10 AM. and 12:00 noon. These times have been chosen so that there is adequate time to sanitize the Church for the next group of people. 1.) Please wear a mask. The Church is a public place. Kindly arrive shortly before Mass begins. Time will be needed to sani- tize pews before Mass. Please enter through the doors which will be propped open. In this way you can avoid contact with door handles. 2.) There will be some hand sanitizer available in the rear of the church. We strongly recommend, however, that you bring your own hand sanitizer so as to avoid contagion from the pump bottles. 3.) To maintain social distancing, every 2nd pew has been closed off. While families and married couples may sit together, please do not sit closer than 6 feet to the person next to you. 4.) Please use discretion in respecting other people’s boundaries and do not come closer than the recommended six feet. 5.) Please take a parish bulletin on your way into Church. Hymnals have been removed from the pews for safety sake. The words of the hymns and other worship aids will be included in our parish bulletins. Please take your bulletins home with you and do not leave them in the pew. 6.) Holy Communion will be distributed after Mass. The priest and deacon will distribute communion from the rear of the church. After receiving communion, please do not return to the church. The church will need to be sanitized before the next group of people arrive. 7.) Please do not remove your mask until just ready to receive Holy Communion. We strongly encourage that you receive communion in the hand as a sanitary measure. Communion on the tongue is permitted. 8.) The priest will have a bottle of hand sanitizer next to him. He may sanitize his hands between communicants if he feels it is necessary. 9.) We strongly recommend taking a few minutes after returning to your cars to make a thanksgiving after communion. Pray- ers will be printed in the parish bulletin. 10.) Please be conscious that after each Mass or any other gathering, the church needs to be sanitized. We ask that you be considerate to people doing this work by exiting the church immediately after Mass. Kindly do not leave anything in the pews or gathering area. Please do not congregate with anyone on church grounds after Mass. This would violate CDC guide- lines. Thank you for your consideration. Please be safe! Please be respectful!

2021 LENTEN PASTORAL LETTER Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God, that no bitter root spring up and cause trouble, through which many may become defied. Hebrews 12:14-15 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The quote above from Hebrews is not frequently cited in Lenten reflections. This Lent, however, these words especially strike me as we embrace this Season as a time of reconciliation which comes as the fruit of penance. True repentance includes reconciliation with God, the Church, neighbor and self. The many mani- festations of division that we have seen so clearly in our Church and Nation enjoin us to the repent- ance that leads to true reconciliation with God, the Church, and our brothers and sisters. It is often said that we create the times in which we live. We determine through our thoughts, words, and actions whether our individual and social lives will be created by a preference for divi- sion or a preference for reconciliation. Through prayer, fasting and charitable works, we can more easily see our neighbor, in the light of God’s precious creation, like ourselves rather than as an ad- versary to vanquish by words, violence, or pre-judgments.

Finally, we cannot achieve the reconciliation desired without our faith, devotion, and reception of the Most Holy Eucharist which is the Sacrament of unity and charity. Our real presence at Mass and reception of Holy Communion, the Real Presence of Christ, is the bedrock of any true peace and reconciliation that begins within us. May we accompany one another this Lent with prayer, fasting, good works, and reception of the Holy Eucharist to build a Church and Nation of reconciliation. Sincerely yours in Christ Most Reverend Alfred A. Schlert , Bishop of Allentown

Even though we are leaving the church immediately after receiving Holy Communion, it is so very important in our spiritual lives for us to pause and recognize Christ’s Eucharistic presence within us. Traditionally, the period after communion is a time of intense personal prayer for the believer. We invite you to take that time in your cars before leaving the church parking lot. Below are two prayers that can be used, either individually, or they can be prayed aloud in a group or as a family:

Prayers after communion:

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from thee. From the malignant enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me. And bid me come unto Thee, That with all Thy , I may praise thee Forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Communion for Children: Lord Jesus, I love and adore you. You’re a special friend to me. Welcome, Lord Jesus, o welcome. Thank you for coming to me. Thank you, Lord Jesus, o thank you for giving yourself to me. Make me strong to show your love wherever I may be. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all of us children in your loving care and bring us to heaven to live with you there. I’m ready now, Lord Jesus, to show how much I care. I’m ready now to give your love at home and everywhere. Amen.

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Mary for protection from the coronavirus: O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed . Amen. ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH FEBRURY 21, 2021 EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA
