This is a good time to take a look at ourselves and see if we, too, are hoarders. We may not be at the same level as what is seen on TV, but we can probably see the similarity. It is easy to accumulate possessions. They give us a sense of security. Possessions can become the downfall of many of us, because we may feel that we don’t have enough. You can see that in another TV type show; the coupon shopper who had a whole room of stuff that would last her two lifetimes. We like to have lots of things because the more we have the more we feel secure. But is this “real” security? Jesus, in the Gospel today, blows this theory out of the water. Jesus gives the example of a rich man who hoards his harvest and builds bigger barns to store his grain and possessions. He thinks that he is secure. Listen to what God says to him: “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong? Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” And let me share with you the wisdom of a mother: “Remember this, you came into the world naked and when you leave this world, you cannot take anything with you.” At that time, whenever it may come, Jesus is not going to ask how much we have, but how you have lived your life in love for one another. Summer food for thought: Jesus is the reason for Sunday; so don’t forget to go to church when on vacation. God Bless, Fr.     St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois August 9, 2020 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Renew My Church: Our Own Discipleship We have a mission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations… Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you and know that I am with you always, until the end of the world” (Mt 28:19-20). This is the Great Commission that Christ gave His apostles. And He gives us this mission today as something to accomplish together. An important element to achieving our mission is understanding what we’re facing today. In an earlier article, I noted some of the reasons why renewal is needed, not the least of which is a steady decline in faith practices that stretches back decades. There are many issues that people cite as a catalyst for leaving the Church or lapsing in their faith. The pain and suffering of the abuse crisis and failure in leadership amongst some has been reason enough for some to walk away or refrain from (re)entering. There are also the age-old allurements and noon-day devils that cause people to drift away from the faith of their youth. And there are also issues and challenges of a personal nature that only God can see within people’s hearts. But there are also people that leave the Church not because they reject her teachings or doctrines or even because of the scandals – they leave because they want more than what they’re experiencing. In some way, they doubt that Jesus is present within their own parish.

When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?” When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax.
