TERESA STAFF NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME RECTOR The Reverend Christopher R. Heanue On this Sunday, we continue to read from the “Bread of [email protected] Life discourse” found in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. PAROCHIAL VICAR Recall that we have been reading from this chapter for the The Reverend Pascal Louis [email protected] past two weeks and will continue to read from it for another two. Last week, the crowd asked for a sign that would show PRIESTS IN RESIDENCE that Jesus came from God. Jesus replied by saying that he The Reverend Monsignor Sean G. Ogle [email protected] is the sign and the bread of life sent by God. At this point, our Lectionary omits six verses in which Jesus predicts the The Reverend Sebastián Sardo unbelief of the crowd and further develops his connection DEACON with God the Father. In these verses, Jesus says that he was Deacon Fausto Duran sent by God to do the Father’s will. Jesus promises that tho- [email protected] se who look upon the Son with faith will find eternal life. DEACON/RCIA DIRECTOR Some of these themes are repeated in today’s Gospel reading. Deacon Manuel H. Quintana [email protected] Today’s Gospel begins with a report that the Jews complained about Jesus’ claims RELIGIOUS EDUCATION regarding his identity. They knew his family, and they knew he was the son of Jo- Ms. Jessica Figueroa seph. They could not comprehend what Jesus meant when he said that he came [email protected] down from heaven. Jesus responds to the complaints by saying that only those who Mrs. Brenda Donald are chosen by God will recognize him as the one that God sent. This is a recurring [email protected] theme in John’s Gospel, that God has chosen those who will have faith in Jesus. PARISH SECRETARY In the verses that follow, Jesus talks more about his unity with the Father. He is the Fabiola Edmond one who has seen the Father and, therefore, knows the Father. Those who listen [email protected] to God will recognize that Jesus is the one sent from God. Those who believe will BOOKKEEPER have eternal life. Jesus concludes with the central element of our eucharistic theo- Bill Slattery logy. He promises that the bread of life will bring eternal life to those who partake [email protected] of it, and he tells us that the bread of life will be his own flesh, given for the life of MUSIC DIRECTOR the world. Mr. Alejandro Zuleta [email protected] In today’s reading, we hear Jesus say again, as he did in last week's Gospel, that he BULLETIN is the bread of life. We also hear Jesus add that he is the living bread. Both of these Alma Ramales statements help us understand better the gift that Jesus gives us in the Eucharist. [email protected] We celebrate this gift of Jesus each time we gather for Mass. We believe that recei- YOUNG ADULTS ving Jesus in the Eucharist will lead us to eternal life. TERESA OF AVILA OF SAINT JOSEPH SAINT DOMINIC Today, August 8th, we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Dominic. Take the time to learn more about Saint Dominic and his importance to our faith. MASS INTENTIONS FOR AUGUST 7 - 8, 2021 If he hadn’t taken a trip with his bishop, Dominic would probably have remained within the structu- SATURDAY re of contemplative life; after the trip, he spent the 5:00 PM Myrtha Louverture rest of his life being a contemplative in active apos- (Birthday) tolic work. 6:30 PM Mireille Hall Born in old Castile, Spain, Dominic was trained (Thanksgiving) for the priesthood by a priest-uncle, studied the SUNDAY arts and theology, and became a canon of the ca- 9:00 AM Carmelle Fervil thedral at Osma, where there was an attempt to re- (Thanksgiving) vive the apostolic common life described in Acts of the Apostles. 10:00 AM +Wibert C. Patris On a journey through France with his bishop, 11:00 AM +Robert E. Polius Dominic came face to face with the then virulent Albigensian heresy at Languedoc. The Albigen- 1:30 PM +Lolita Alquedan sians--or Cathari, “the pure ones”--held to two & +Maria Carmelita Alquedan principles—one good, one evil—in the world. All matter is evil—hence they denied the Incarnation and the sacraments. On the 6:00 PM +Unita Modeste same principle, they abstained from procreation and took a minimum of food and drink. The inner circle led what some people regarded as a heroic life of purity and asceticism not shared by ordinary followers. Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy, and was com- missioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it. He saw immediately why the preaching crusade was not succeeding: the ordinary people admired and followed the ascetical heroes of the Albigenses. Understandably, they were not impressed by the Catholic preachers who traveled with horse and retinues, stayed at the best inns and had servants. Dominic therefore, with three Cister- LECTORS FOR cians, began itinerant preaching according to the gospel ideal. He continued AUGUST 14 - 15, 2021 this work for 10 years, being successful with the ordinary people but not with AUGUST 14 the leaders. 5:00 PM - Dolores Guillaume His fellow preachers gradually became a community, and in 1215 Dominic 6:30 PM - TBD founded a religious house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans. AUGUST 15 9:00 AM - Jean Guerrier Dominic's ideal, and that of his Order, was to organically link a life with God, 10:00 AM - Hazel Dasent study, and prayer in all forms, with a ministry of salvation to people by the word 11:00 AM - Tatiana Ramirez of God. TERESA OF AVILA OF SAINT JOSEPH BLESSED MICHAEL MCGIVNEY Today, August 8th, we celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Michael McGivney. Take the time to learn more about Blessed Michael McGivney and his importance to our faith. The eldest son of an immigrant Irish family in Connecticut, young Michael left school at 13 to work in a brass factory making spoons. At 16 he began studies for the priesthood in Quebec, but was obliged to leave to help support the family when his father died. Michael completed his education in Baltimore, Maryland, and was ordained for the diocese of Hartford in 1877. Assigned to St.
