TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | October 22, 2017 Sterling Heights, MI Sterling Heights, MI October 8, 2017 THIS WEEK’S JERRY-ATRICS

Pope Francis recently commented that our present age constitutes a virtual conspiracy against meditation and living a contemplative life. That is a gentle way of saying that, within our culture, distraction is normal; prayer and solitude however, are not. Why is this? We are not, by nature, dead-set against solitude and prayer. Nor are we, in my opinion, afraid of meditation and Fr. Jerry Slowinski reflection. Where we differ from previous generations is our busyness, our hurriedness. We just Pastor never seem to have the time to get around to slowing down and reflecting. Ext. 101 Perhaps the most apt metaphor to describe our hurried and distracted lives is that of a car wash. When you pull up to a car wash, you are instructed to leave your motor running, to take your hands off the steering wheel and to keep your foot off the brake. The idea is that the machine will suck you through the tunnel of suds. For most of us, that’s what our typical day does to us, it sucks us through. We are awakened daily by some type of alarm clock. We rise to have our morning coffee, shower and dress as we ready ourselves for the upcoming day stimulated by music, television or the internet. We spend our days working, necessarily preoccupied, our minds fully focused and engaged on what we need to do. When we return home there is TV, conversation, activities and preoccupations of all kinds. Eventually, we go to bed where perhaps we read or watch a bit more TV until we finally retire for the night.

When, in the course of all of this, did we take time to contemplate, to pray, to wonder, to appreciate, to simply enjoy and be grateful just for being alive and having someone in our life who loves us? The days just suck us through. How much time in a given day, or week, does God even come to mind? We are all aware of this to a greater or lesser extent. We say things like “It’s a rat race out there.” We know we drive too hurriedly. We live too impatiently. We eat too fast. We work too hard. We are so preoccupied we never take the time to slow down and smell the flowers! But nothing changes. (Continued on Page 3)

ST. JANE FRANCES de CHANTAL PAGE 3 STERLING HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN (Continued from Page 1) Perhaps you have heard the saying “the unexamined life is not worth living”? The counter argument to that, which many people subscribe to, is “the unlived life is not worth examining.” We examine our life less and less because we want to live life to the fullest. We don’t sit down very often just to enjoy a good meal. We know we are guilty of living life in the fast lane. We find it difficult to relax and to – need I say it? – pray. I do not want to be judgmental, but I suspect that most persons in our culture pray very little, at least in terms of private prayer. I suspect the average person’s prayer life consists, at best, of a short, Fr. Jerry Slowinski hurried prayer in the morning, grace before meals, and, if not totally exhausted, a second short prayer Pastor before nodding off to sleep. That amounts to a microscopic amount of time in a given day. Our inability Ext. 101 to be contemplative doesn’t manifest itself in our lack of private prayer. That is merely a symptom of something more deeply amiss. What our hurried lifestyle and our propensity for distraction are really doing is robbing us of solitude. As solitude diminishes, life seems less and less worth living.

Ironically, most of us crave solitude. As our lives grow more pressured, as we grow more and more tired, as we begin to talk more and more about burnout, we fantasize about solitude. We imagine solitude as a peaceful, quiet place, watching a sunset, or sitting in a rocker by a fireplace. Solitude is not isolation from the rat race. Solitude is a form of awareness. It is a way of being present and perceptive to all of life. Solitude leads to a sense of thankfulness and appreciation. Solitude is the realization of the preciousness and sacredness of the time God gives to us on this earth.

So how do we foster solitude? How do we get a handle on life so that it just does not suck us through? How do we begin to lay a foundation for prayer in our lives?

St. was once asked to give a simple guideline for developing a deeper relationship with God and for an appreciation for what we have been blessed with. His response was “A half hour of silence once a day, twice a day if you can afford the time. It will change your life and your relationship with God.” In this regard, he was light years ahead of advising people how to deal with a culture which conspires against meditation and living a contemplative life.

Try prayer and silence. Once a day. Twice a day if you can afford the time. It serves as the antidote against the virtual conspiracy of daily meditation and living a contemplative life.

Meditation Hymn: He's Got the Whole World in His Hands arr. Hogan. This anonymous spiritual rose out of the oral tradition of African Americans and has become one of the most widely known and loved spirituals, sung by young and old everywhere. Like other songs arising out of an oral tradition, it has many variations in both text and tune. Creating new stanzas would also be consistent with the tradition. William Harrison Director, The text confesses the same theme of the Lord’s cosmic rule that is proclaimed in the kingship psalms Music Ministry such as Psalm 47 and 93-99: “The Lord reigns!” The stanzas give examples of aspects of the “whole Ext. 103 world”–nature, human creatures, and in fact, everything and everybody.

HEALTH MINISTRY Flu shot: Your best bet for avoiding influenza By Mayo Clinic Staff

Getting a flu shot often protects you from coming down with the flu. And although the flu shot doesn't always provide total protection, it's worth getting.

This year's annual flu shot will offer protection against the H1N1 flu virus, in addition to two other influenza viruses that are expected to be in circulation this flu season. A vaccine that protects against four strains of the virus will alsobe available, as will a high-dose flu vaccine for adults age 65 and older. Influenza is a respiratory infection that can cause serious complications, particularly to young children, older adults and people with certain medical conditions. Flu shots are the most effective way to prevent influenza and its complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age or older be vaccinated annually against influenza.

When is the flu vaccine available? It is available now. It takes up to two weeks to build immunity after a flu shot, but you can benefit from the vaccine even if you don't get it until after the flu season starts.

Why do I need to get vaccinated every year? New flu vaccines are released every year to keep up with rapidly adapting flu viruses. Because flu viruses evolve so quickly, last year's vaccine may not protect you from this year's viruses. After vaccination, your immune system produces antibodies that will protect you from the vaccine viruses. In general, though, antibody levels start to decline over time — another reason to get a flu shot every year.

Who should get the flu vaccine? The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccinations for everyone age 6 months or older. Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of influenza complications, including pregnant women, older adults, and young children. Chronic medical conditions also can increase your risk of influenza complications, such as cancer or cancer treatment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, diabetes, obesity and HIV/AIDs. Check with your doctor before receiving a flu vaccine you are allergic to eggs, or if you had a severe reaction to a previous flu vaccine.

Can the vaccine give me the flu? No. The flu vaccine can't give you the flu. But you might develop flu-like symptoms — despite getting a flu shot — for a variety of reasons, including:

Reaction to the vaccine. Some people experience muscle aches and a fever for a day or two after receiving a flu shot. This may be a side effect of your body's production of protective antibodies. The two-week window. It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to take full effect. If you're exposed tothe influenza virus shortly before or during that time period, you might catch the flu. Mismatched flu viruses. In some years, the influenza viruses used for the vaccine don't match the viruses circulating during the flu season. If this occurs, your flu shot will be less effective, but may still offersome protection. Other illnesses. Many other diseases, such as the common cold, also produce flu-like symptoms. So you may think you have the flu when you actually don't.

What kind of protection does the flu vaccine offer? How well the flu vaccine works can vary. The flu vaccine is generally more effective among healthy children age 2 and older and adults age 64 and younger. Some older people and people with certain medical conditions may develop less immunity after receiving a flu shot.

According to the CDC, in past flu seasons when the match between the flu vaccine and circulating strains of flu virus is close, a flu shot is 40 to 60 percent effective in reducing the risk of getting influenza among people of all ages.

CAPUCHIN HEALING SERVICE The Capuchin Friars of St. are coming to St. Jane Frances de Chantal on Tuesday, October 24th for a traditional Blessing of the Sick service. This will not be a Mass, but will be in place of the regularly scheduled Tuesday evening Mass with Anointing.

The friars will use a relic of the True Cross to bless all who are in need of healing, either in mind, body, or spirit. When Venerable Fr. Solanus Casey was at St. Bonaventure's in Detroit, he would often help and bless those seeking healing. This service is regularly available at St. Bonaventure Chapel which is attached to the Solanus Casey Center, but we are making it available to our parish and our neighbors on this occasion.

Please join us on Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00pm to offer up our trials, pains, and suffering, and be blessed with a relic of the True Cross.
