FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Procedures for Sunday Mass: We will resume celebrating Sunday Mass with a congregation in church beginning the weekend of July 4-5. It is important that we all maintain proper social distancing. Until further notice, we will preserve the schedule of Saturday Evening Mass at 5:00. Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 9 AM and 11 AM. These times have been chosen so that there is adequate time to sanitize the Church for the next group of people. 1.) Please wear a mask. The Church is a public place. Kindly arrive shortly before Mass begins. Time will be needed to sanitize pews before Mass. Please enter through the doors which will be propped open. In this way you can avoid contact with door handles. 2.) There will be some hand sanitizer available in the rear of the church. We strongly recommend, however, that you bring your own hand sanitizer so as to avoid contagion from the pump bottles. 3.) To maintain social distancing, every 2nd pew has been closed off. While families and married couples may sit together, please do not sit closer than 6 feet to the person next to you. 4.) Please use discretion in respecting other people’s boundaries and do not come closer than the recommended six feet. 5.) Please take a parish bulletin on your way into Church. Hymnals have been removed from the pews for safety sake. The words of the hymns and other worship aids will be included in our parish bulletins. Please take your bulletins home with you and do not leave them in the pew. 6.) Holy Communion will be distributed after Mass. The priest and deacon will distribute commun- ion from the rear of the church. After receiving communion, please do not return to the church. The church will need to be sanitized before the next group of people arrive. 7.) Please do not remove your mask until just ready to receive Holy Communion. We strongly en- courage that you receive communion in the hand as a sanitary measure. Communion on the tongue is permitted. 8.) The priest will have a bottle of hand sanitizer next to him. He may sanitize his hands between communicants if he feels it is necessary. 9.) We strongly recommend taking a few minutes after returning to your cars to make a thanks- giving after communion. Prayers will be printed in the parish bulletin. 10.) Please be conscious that after each Mass or any other gathering, the church needs to be san- itized. We ask that you be considerate to people doing this work by exiting the church immediately after Mass. Kindly do not leave anything in the pews or gathering area. Please do not congregate with anyone on church grounds after Mass. This would violate CDC guidelines. Thank you for your consideration. Please be safe! Please be respectful! On Sunday, October 25th of this year, our parish will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding. Our Bishop and parish son, Most Reverend Alfred A Schlert will be with us to preside at the celebration of a 3 PM Mass, and im- mediately following the Mass, we will come together for a celebratory dinner at the Blue Grillhouse on Easton Avenue. Tickets for this celebration will go on sale in the parish office this weekend, July 11-12.

St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois August 9, 2020 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Renew My Church: Our Own Discipleship We have a mission: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations… Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you and know that I am with you always, until the end of the world” (Mt 28:19-20). This is the Great Commission that Christ gave His apostles. And He gives us this mission today as something to accomplish together. An important element to achieving our mission is understanding what we’re facing today. In an earlier article, I noted some of the reasons why renewal is needed, not the least of which is a steady decline in faith practices that stretches back decades. There are many issues that people cite as a catalyst for leaving the Church or lapsing in their faith. The pain and suffering of the abuse crisis and failure in leadership amongst some has been reason enough for some to walk away or refrain from (re)entering. There are also the age-old allurements and noon-day devils that cause people to drift away from the faith of their youth. And there are also issues and challenges of a personal nature that only God can see within people’s hearts. But there are also people that leave the Church not because they reject her teachings or doctrines or even because of the scandals – they leave because they want more than what they’re experiencing. In some way, they doubt that Jesus is present within their own parish.

“What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testaments is not the truest of guides for human life?” ~Saint Benedict, from the Rule of Saint Benedict (73:3) "A person who governs his passions is the master of the world. We must either rule them, or be ruled by them. It is better to be the hammer than the anvil. " --Saint Dominic Monday, August 8 ~ Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time Saint Dominic, Priest; Founder, Order of Preachers (Dominicans) Holy Gospel: Matthew 17:22-27 As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were overwhelmed with grief. When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said, “Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?” “Yes,” he said. When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, “What is your opinion, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From their subjects or from foreigners?” When he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the subjects are exempt. But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.” Meditation: On three different occasions the Gospels record that Jesus’ prediction that he would endure great suffering through betrayal, rejection, and the punishment of a cruel death.
