ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL 38750 RYAN ROAD, STERLING HEIGHTS, MI 48310 586-977-8080 SJFPARISH.ORG Fr. Tony Sulkowski We are in the midst of Ordinary Time. What is Ordinary Time? Pastor The definition of Ordinary Time is taken from the Documents on the Liturgy: [email protected] Ext. 102 “Apart from those seasons having their own distinctive character, (eg. Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter), thirty-three or thirty-four weeks remain in the yearly cycle that do not celebrate a specific aspect of the mystery of Christ. Rather, especially on the Sundays, they are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. This period is known as Ordinary Time.” In our day-to-day lives, we should celebrate that God blesses us and the people with whom we share our gifts and talents. It is in our everyday lives that we see and experience God. However, with the eyes of faith, we must see the experiences of our life as God-given. We are created in the image and likeness of God, and we are called to project those experiences onto others so that they too can see God’s hand in their lives. One example I use often is the food baskets that we prepare for the needy at Christmas and Easter. It is very easy for us to give at those times of the year. The need is always in the forefront of our mind at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. However, that need is year-round, and exists even during the ordinary times of the year. Ordinary Time is not all that ordinary. It can be a challenging season. Seasons like Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter already draw us in and point us toward a direction to celebrate a specific aspect of the life of Christ. In the season of Ordinary Time, the onus, or responsibility, is placed on us. We are challenged to see God in our daily lives and to celebrate the Word made flesh. To be disciples of the Lord is to see the Lord’s presence in all aspects of our life and in those we come in contact with. As I mentioned in my homily on the Feast of the Epiphany, we, like the Magi, must look up so we can see the stars. In this New Year, may we see what the Magi saw: namely, the Word made flesh, and how it has come to dwell among us. In this day of social media and all that it means, it is easy for us to communicate without ever making eye contact or speaking a single word. We need to look up, see our brothers and sisters, and become an active player in our society, our Church, and our community. Bon mot: “What you have to do and the way you have to do it is incredibly simple. Whether you are willing to do it is another matter.” —Peter Drucker Carpe Diem, Fr. Tony

JANUARY 24, 2021 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Laurie Hall WORSHIP SCHEDULE Pastoral Associate WORD OF GOD SUNDAY Weekend Masses [email protected] Adapted from Fr. Brian Meldrum. Saturday 4:00pm Ext. 104 Today we celebrate the Sunday of the Word Sunday 9:00am & 11:30am of God, instituted in 2019 by Francis. In Weekday Masses his letter establishing this celebration, Pope Francis shares: Tuesday 7:00pm “It is fitting, then, that the life of our people be constantly marked by this Wednesday & Thursday 8:00am decisive relationship with the living word that the Lord never tires of speaking Holy Day Masses As Announced to his Bride, that she may grow in love and faithful witness” (Aperuit illis, 2). Confession Every story told in the Scriptures, even the most challenging, reminds us that Tuesday 5:30pm God loves His people and will always be faithful to the covenant He has made with us. God sent us His Son, the Word Incarnate, to not only speak these Rosary words of faithful love, but also to show us the depths of faithful love by dying Tuesday 6:00pm on the cross and rising from the dead. Every word of Scripture points to this message of love enacted in the person of Jesus Christ, who is the Word Himself. OFFICE HOURS Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday In honor of today’s celebration, we thank the lectors who proclaim the Word of 9:00am—1:00pm & 4:30pm—8:00pm God and the priests and deacons who preach it. To read more about this celebration, visit usccb.org. Tuesday 2:00pm—8:00pm PRAYER TO OVERCOME INDIFFERENCE Saturday Adapted from catholiccurrent.org. 3:00pm—5:00pm I was talking with a friend recently, and he said he was becoming indifferent to Sunday the world around him. The many different issues in our world and so many 10:00am—12:30pm months of isolation had left him feeling unmoved by the challenges outside his door. I think we can all understand that feeling—but I also think we need to PARISH HAPPENINGS work against becoming indifferent to the plights of those around us. I saw this prayer recently, and immediately sent it to my friend. If you are struggling to Monday, January 25, 2021 engage in the world around you, you may find this prayer helpful. 9:00am Panera All too often, Lord, we turn away from the world's many problems, Tuesday, January 26, 2021 which seem too big, too complex, or too far away. 5:30pm Confession Forgive us our indifference. 6:00pm Rosary It is easier, Lord, to see only what is around us: 7:00pm Mass w/ Anointing our lives, our homes, our challenges. Wednesday, January 27, 2021 Forgive us our isolation. 8:00am Mass Help us to see with your eyes: 9:30am Needlecrafters eyes which notice one another and help us understand. Help us to dream your dream: of communities that reach out and dialogue Thursday, January 28, 2021 and where diverse people creatively cooperate. 8:00am Mass Help us to be people of solidarity and action, 9:00am Swiffers Team #2 so moved by prayer, encounter, and understanding Friday, January 29, 2021 that peace can become a reality. No events Amen. Saturday, January 30, 2021 ORDINARY TIME 4:00pm Mass Adapted from the Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays 2021. 5:00pm Divine Mercy Prayers The Christmas season ended recently; we return to Ordinary Time for just a Sunday, January 31, 2021 brief period this year. After the lights and carols of Christmas, Ordinary Time 9:00am Mass can seem so, well, ordinary. But it is in the ordinary days of our ordinary lives 10:00am K of C Family Rosary that God asks us to build his Kingdom. The lectionary readings during these 11:30am Mass weeks take us through the life of Christ. Striving to live Jesus’ example of love, reconciliation, and healing can transform ordinary moments into ones of charity. Take time this week to look for God in ordinary moments of your life. Ben Klassen Youth Ministry Coordinator & Last week, I wrote a little on SCRIPTURE READINGS Director of Faith Formation vocation—God’s calling for our lives. [email protected] When we are called, we begin as a WEEK OF JAN. 24, 2021 Ext. 108 passive participant in an interchange Sunday of intercourse. This is not how that 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time calling can continue; at some point, an answer is required from those who are Jon 3:1-5, 10 being called. Think of sitting in a room and hearing your name called out from Ps 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9 another area. If we do not answer, we might be called again—or the caller 1 Cor 7:29-31 might just give up trying to reach us. Our response is key to determining where, Mk 1:14-20 how, and if the exchange, which was initiated by “the caller,” will continue. Monday Look at the Gospel readings that we hear on the weekends. Sometimes we can Feast of the Conversion be confused by the order of the readings we hear from week to week. Just last of St. week, we heard that Andrew, Simon (Peter)’s brother, was one of the disciples Acts 22:3-16 or Acts 9:1-22 of , who followed Jesus to where he lived. Yet, in this week’s Ps 117:1bc, 2 Gospel, Jesus finds Simon and Andrew fishing with their father. Do we just Mk 16:15-18 become confused, throw up our hands, and forget about scripture? Are we Tuesday paying enough attention during the readings to notice the difference in the Memorial of Sts. Timothy & Titus, Bishops stories? Are we hearing the true “calling” that the reading is evoking in each of 2 Tm 1:1-8 or Ti 1:1-5 us? Critical thinking can help us find ways in which these Gospel readings (from Ps 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 7-8a. 10 different authors) can work together. Last week, John the Baptist pointed out a Mk 3:31-35 man to his disciples and told them that man was special. This week, in Mark’s Wednesday Gospel, Jesus comes back to Galilee (after the arrest of the Baptist) and saw Angela Merici, one of the men who had sought Him out. Last week, the men sought out Jesus. Heb 10:11-18 This week, Jesus, now in the role as Rabbi, sought out what was to become the Ps 110:1, 2, 3, 4 beginnings of His band of disciples. Mk 4:1-20 In each Gospel, a “calling” is made and a response is given. This week, the men Thursday give up their lives as fishermen to become followers of Jesus. Everything that Memorial of St. , they know, they set aside, and their lives are changed. Our second reading Priest & (1 Cor 7:29-31) tells us the world as we know it is moving on. In the early days Heb 10:19-25 Ps 24:1-2, 3-4ab, 5-6 of Christianity, people were fixated on the “end of the world”—the second Mk 4:21-25 coming of the Messiah, an apocalypse. We know that the world did not end, and we look more to the Greek word apokálypsis to see that our knowledge of Friday the world has changed. This letter to the Corinthians tells us that we need to be Heb 10:32-39 able to set aside what we know and see how “the other side” lives. Ps 37:3-4, 5-6, 23-24, 39-40 Mk 4:26-34 The fact is, God has called each of us to a life in Him. The real question is: How do we respond to His call? Do we give up and return to what we know, Saturday Heb 11:1-2, 8-19 or do we challenge ourselves to seek out the answer and see how others might Lk 1:69-70, 71-72, 73-75 perceive the call? Some people need the stability that comes with repetition; if Mk 4:35-41 too many “new things” happen, it burns them out! Other people seek out “new Sunday experiences” and are bored by repetition. It really is amazing how different th each of us is, and how each of our differences are key to making our world work 4 Sunday in Ordinary Time together. I look forward to working with many different people in the future, Dt 18:15-20 Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9 growing in faith, and understanding with everyone! 1 Cor 7:32-35 LECTOR SCHEDULE Mk 1:21-28 Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Saturday Sunday Jan. 26, 2020 Jan. 27, 2021 Jan. 28, 2021 Jan. 30, 2021 Jan. 31, 2021 KEEP IN TOUCH. 7:00pm 8:00am 8:00am 4:00pm 9:00am SJFPARISH.ORG/NEWS Craig Smith Judy Taylor Barb Milczynski Keith Morris Kathleen Pawlik 11:30am Barb Milczynski THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3
