In the years between the two World Wars the concept became more political in nature: after Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania obtained their independence in 1918 the region gradually became understood as the geographical entity made up of these three republics. Although the Baltic region is geographically fairly homogeneous, each of the newly restored republics possesses unique geographical and strategic features. -

Strengthening the U.S.-Lithuania Partnership:Lithuania Perspective
STRENGTHENING THE U.S.-LITHUANIA PARTNERSHIP: LITHUANIAN PERSPECTIVE Vygaudas Ušackas HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The last few years of Lithuania-U.S. relations have been marked by the historic decisions of NATO enlargement, thus concluding one chapter in the bilateral relationship and building an even stronger foundation for an ever-closer strategic partnership between the two nations in the future. The United States of America played a crucial role in allowing Lithuania and the other six Central European countries to be invited to the 2002 Prague summit to join NATO. On May 9, 2003, the U.S. Senate unanimously ratified the NATO Accession Protocols, thus paving the way for U.S. President George W. Bush’s vision of “Europe whole and free, and at peace” to become a reality. Moreover, in the last few years we have enjoyed the unparalleled attention of the White House, the Hill and the American people. The U.S.-Lithuanian relationship goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. The restoration of the State of Lithuania on February 16, 1918 and its international recognition were closely linked to the principle of self-determination advocated by the twenty-eighth U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson. America was one of the first to recognise the independence of Lithuania. Throughout the brutal Soviet occupation, America lived up to its principles, and never recognized Lithuania as part of the USSR. The tricolour-flag of Lithuania at the U.S. Department of State during the dark years of occupation was conveying the hope to hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians in America and worldwide that the most brutal breach of international law was just temporary and that the independence of Lithuania would one day be restored. -

TRAKØ ISTORINIS NACIONALINIS PARKAS IR JO KULTÛROS VERTYBIØ SVARBA UNESCO KRITERIJØ ATÞVILGIU JONAS GLEMÞA Vilniaus dailës akademija Trakø istorinis nacionalinis parkas yra unikalus Trakø eþeryno kraðtovaizdþio ir kultûros vertybiø kompleksas, kurá sudaro: Trakø salos ir pusiasalio XIVXV a. pilys, Senøjø Trakø piliavietë, Trakø senamiestis, XIVXIX/XX a. pradþia bei XIX a. The interwar period is characterised by the institutions, established for the pedagogical ed- ucation of teachers, and agendas that arise along with them, at Polish universities, aiming at ped- agogical education and generation of pedagogical knowledge. The example of such actions was the establishment of the Department of Pedagogy and Didactics at the University of the Piasts (Wszechnica Piastowska). It was due to the efforts of the first directors of the Department – Antoni Danysz, Bogdan Nawroczyński, and Ludwik Jaxa-Bykowski, that the Poznań academic pedagogy had played a significant role in the structures of the University of Poznań, and in the scientific de- velopment of Polish pedagogy. Despite it being shut down in 1933, within the continuous cooper- ation with the Department of Psychology, the Poznań University, gave the opportunity and shaped the future teachers. Keywords: pedagogy, the Department of Pedagogy and Didactics, Wszechnicza Piastowska, The University of Poznań, Antoni Danysz, Ludwik Jaxa-Bykowski, the University of the Western Lands, the interwar period Introduction The institutionalisation and disciplinarisation of pedagogy in Poland was initiated during the period of building the structures of an independent state – the Second Polish Republic. -
Locked Up« in Nation States: Perceptions of the Relations Between the State and National Community Within Political and Social Discourse in Lithuania
Original scientific article UDK 316.773.2:342.228(474.5) Eglė Kesylytė-Alliks »LOCKED UP« IN NATION STATES: PERCEPTIONS OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE STATE AND NATIONAL COMMUNITY WITHIN POLITICAL AND SOCIAL DISCOURSE IN LITHUANIA ABSTRACT This article examines how the idea of the nation-state is articulated in political and social discourse. In particular, it explores how the national community and the state are posi- tioned vis-a`-vis each other in discourse surrounding national flags. I locate my analysis in Lithuania after the dissolution of the USSR. I explore how the interaction between the state and the nation is discursively represented among politicians and ordinary citizens when they discuss Lithuanian national flag(s). Intriguingly, whereas semi-public discourse could generally be described as “locked up” in thinking in terms of the nation and state as interdependent entities, for political actors the intertwining of the nation and state was a less doxastic state of affairs. -

Independence aspirations were voiced not only by Poles, who had a tradition of statehood, but also by other nations living within the Republic of Both Nations, including Belarusians1. This situation left the elites of both nations facing new challenges since their political plans for theUMCS Belarusian lands were markedly different. This was evidenced, e.g., in the efforts made by Roman Dmowski, the leader of National Democracy, which was the most influential party among Poles, who presented Arthur Balfour, British Foreign Secretary, with a memorandum, in which he openly stated that nobody in Poland believed in the possibility of rebuilding their statehood in cooperation with Russia. He went on to argue that the only way out was to create an independent Polish State, which would span over such governorates (guberniyas) as Grodno Governo- rate, Vilna Governorate, and the majority of Minsk Governorate2. -

© Lonely Planet Publications 467 LITHUANIA LITHUANIA Lithuania The Baltic countries have a reputation for their dour ways, but this image fades when you enter rebellious Lithuania, a country blessed with boundless energy and studded with re- minders of its colourful history. It may be a dot on Europe’s map, but that hasn’t stopped Lithuania making big waves on the continent. Outside the country it’s a little-known fact that in the 1400s Lithuania extended beyond Kursk in the east and all the way to the Black Sea in the south. This giant empire didn’t last long, but even today Lithuanians brim with pride and confidence befitting their mighty heritage. More recently – and most notably – the Baltic’s most southern nation became the first state to formally declare its independence from the Soviet Union. In a country favoured by Mother Nature, where pagan roots run deep and Catholic pas- sion lives on, there’s plenty to attract the traveller. For starters there’s effortlessly charming Vilnius and its skyline of baroque spires. The eerie Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai is a truly unique experience. In the west, thousands of migratory birds make Curonian Spit their primary destination, while to the north lies Aukštaitija National Park, a lake land blanketed in dense pine forests and dotted with tiny rural villages. More and more tourists are making Lithuania a port of call, but don’t let that scare you away – there are enough delights to go around in this Baltic beauty.
