Abstract: Acquainting archaeologists with the basic principles behind non‐invasive archaeological prospecting methods, techniques and equipment, and with the possibilities presented by them and their limits, is imperiously necessary for any research endeavour. Of particular concern are the archaeologists involved in preventive and salvage archaeology, cultural heritage management and those who must elaborate coherent archaeological research strategies. Résumé: Familiariser les archéologues avec les principes de base, les méthodes, les techniques et les équipements de prospection archéologique non‐invasive, et avec les possibilités offertes par eux et leurs limites, est impérieusement nécessaire pour toutes les entreprises de recherche. Les archéologues impliqués dans lʹarchéologie préventive et de sauvetage, dans la gestion du patrimoine culturel, et ceux qui doivent élaborer des stratégies cohérentes de la recherche archéologique, sont particulièrement visés. Rezumat: Familiarizarea arheologilor cu principiile de bază, metodele, tehnicile și echipamentele întrebuințate în cercetarea arheologică non‐destructivă, cu posibilitățile şi limitele acestora, este imperios necesară pentru orice efort științific. Given the nature of their work, the archaeologists are currently more concerned than ever by this problem. A judicious management of the tangible cultural heritage requires a classification of the archaeological sites by placing them into three categories: a. Those found in areas unaffected by the above‐mentioned risk factors; b. Those found in areas which are going to be affected by anthropic works or in which the risk of natural hazards is increased; c. Sites which are going to be entirely destroyed and thus require an urgent gathering and recovering of information. In any of these situations, any technique for non‐destructive investigation used in the process of site inspection and evaluation can help in acquiring crucial scientific information; therefore, the capital importance of such endeavours is proved. The information thus obtained, combined with that gathered from field surveying or probing (represented by specific symbols on topographical maps), can produce important data on the past human activity. A preliminary analysis of the material obtained from ordinary fieldwalking can easily set the site within a chronological timeline, but it does not allow for an exact assessment of the surface area occupied by the site, the areas with agglomerations of archaeological material, or the depth at which they lie. All of these questions can be easily answered by employing non‐invasive research methods and techniques. Archaeological research increasingly uses land geophysical investigations as an ancillary science which, co‐jointly with aerial photography, 3D laser scanning, and satellite imaging, constitute a category of quick, economical and flexible methods applicable in any archaeological environment. These methods provide the possibility of delivering high‐ GEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING TECHNIQUES IN ARCHAEOLOGY 7 quality data, using GIS (Geographic Information System) software, of the nature and features of the detected archaeological remains. The dataʹs processing and rendering in formats accessible and intelligible to archaeologists, coupled by a rigorous understanding of the possibilities and limits presented by these methods, can lead to the elaboration of a suitable methodology which can ensure the success of the research campaign. Initially applied particularly in geology, the geophysical methods can measure the various physical properties of the soil and rocks, while also being sensitive to anthropically induced changes. The methods required adaptation and calibration because the archaeological features are found at a much smaller scale, of a magnitude of several centimetres or metres at best, that the geological ones which can span for kilometres; only some of the methods were suitable for this kind of research.3 Usually, the geophysical methods are classified, according to the type of equipment used, into two major groups: passive and active. In the case of the former, the amplitude of the signal generated by the archaeological features is measured directly, while in the case of the latter, an artificial impulse is fed into the soil and subsequently recorded, with its more‐or‐less altered traits.4 A short history The beginnings of magnetic research in archaeology are to be found in England. Following a conference held by the Canadian physicist John Belshe, the archaeologist Graham Webster pondered whether the same technique could be applied in archaeology, for the in situ identification of kilns. The fact that the magnetic approach was viable was previously demonstrated by Belshe following a project of experimental archaeology in which he managed to detect the magnetic signal of a reconstructed Romano‐British kiln.5 In search of practical solutions to his problem, Webster referred it to Martin 3 WEYMOUTH 1986, 313; WYNN 1986, 245. 4 WEYMOUTH 1986, 313‐314; PIRO 2009, 28. 5 AITKEN 1958, 24; 1986, 15. 8 ANDREI ASĂNDULESEI Aitken and Eduard Hall from the Laboratory for Archaeology and Art History Research, from the University of Oxford. The two researches had already been interested by this problem, and despite having only two months at their disposal for resolving the challenge, they manage, by March 1958, to design and build an implement which could be used for detecting underground archaeological structures (Figure 1).6 The same spring, the first volume of the Archaeometry journal7, and in an article published in 1986 in the Italian publication

    CASTELUL DE LA CAPUT STENARUM ŞI COHORS I FLAVIA COMMAGENORUM Cristian SCHUSTER* Fortificaţia de la Boiţa/Caput Stenarum Înainte de a părăsi Transilvania, Oltul face un unghi de aproape 90 de grade, pornind apoi spre sud, prin Carpaţii Meridionali, devenind ulterior „graniţa” dintre Oltenia şi Muntenia. Chiar în dreptul respectivului cot, pe malul drept al râului, investigaţiile arheologice au permis descoperirea resturilor unei fortificaţii romane. Acestea, aflate în punctul cunoscut sub denumirea În Rude (fig. 1), se găsesc astăzi pe teritoriul satului Boiţa (oraşul Tălmaciu, judeţul Sibiu)1. Aşa cum se ştie, cei mai mulţi dintre specialişti consideră că în acest sat trebuie localizat ceea ce Tabula Peutingeriana indică a fi Caput Stenarum2. Prezenţa urmelor romane a fost semnalată încă de la sfârşitul veacului al XIX-lea - începutul celui următor3. Primele cercetări arheologice s-au derulat în 19574, fiind continuate în 19585, 19736, 19797 şi, în cadrul practicii arheologice a studenţilor de la Facultatea de Filologie-Istorie din Sibiu, în vara anului 19818. Fortificaţiei, prin dimensiunile sale reduse – „de 46 x 47 m, fiind, deci, aproape pătrată”9, i se potriveşte mai degrabă termenul de castellum decât cel de castrum. Cu privire la momentul ridicării fortificaţiei din piatră, dar şi a „termelor cu palestrele, tabulariului vămii şi construcţiile cu caracter gospodăresc” s-a emis ipoteza că ele au fost realizate „după anii 167-169 e.n., când s-a operat reorganizarea administrativă şi militară de către Marcus Aurelius”10. Constantinescu Faculty Material’s Science and Engineering, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania Abstract There are many things to learn from the past regarding ancient settlements, the ancient organization of cities, the structures of the buildings and concerning the everyday life of our ancestors. There are numerous sites along the Danube River which were once included in the economic and defensive system of the Roman Empire. Many of them are not well known today or studies are in their very early stages. Sucidava is an example of a Daco-Roman historical defence site, situated on the north bank of the Danube. The ancient heritage site covers more than two hectares; comprising the Roman-Byzantine basilica of the 4th century, the oldest place of worship north of the Danube, the building containing the hypocaust dates from the late 6th century AD, Constantine the Great portal bridge, to span the Danube river, the gates linking the bridge and city, a Roman fountain dating from the 2nd century AD. This entire defensive and communication system stands as a testimony to the complexity of an historical conception. However, how was it possible that such sophisticated structures have been partially or totally destroyed? Certainly not only economic and military aspects might be a likely explanation. The present article considers the evolution of the sites from cultural ecology point of view, as well as taking into consideration environmental and climatic changes. Doubtless, the overall evolution of this site is not singular.

Bulgaria owns treasures so deeply hidden even for the most enthusiastic tourists or historians. Such an example is Ulpia Oescus – forgotten ancient Romanian town, central town of the Roman province Moesia Inferior, which remains were found near village of Gigen, District of Pleven. Ulpia Oescus one of the largest and significant towns in the Lower Danube region during the Roman era (II–IV AD), which nowadays is part of the world cultural and historical heritage. DJINGOVA Faculty of Chemistry, University of Sofia 1126-Sofia, B ulgaria Introduction Glass finds discovered in the European part of the Roman Empaire are usually referred to as Romanglasses while the glass from the Near East and Egypt is considered separately although it has been produced in the same period of time. One of the reasons for this classification isthat glass production in Egypt and the Near East has had a long tradition while the knowledge of glassmaking has been introduced in the Roman Empire from Mesopotamia and Egypt and is considered as new for the territories of Italy and the Eastern provinces. The territory of present Bulgaria belongs to these regions. The Iack of enough chemico-thechnological investigations of Roman glass excavated in Italy was recognized in the Iiterature in the early 80-ies (e.g. Goffer, 1980) and it was recently compensated by the investigations carred out by Casoli&Mirti (1992) and Verita&Toninaga (1990). This Iack is stillmorevalid for the glass, excavated on Bulgarian territory where only a sporadic information exists which does not provide an answer to the questions concerning the technology of glassmaking. It is worth mentioning that the finds from that period are numerous (see e.g. Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a; Mincev, 1986; 1988; 1989; 1990; 1992) and there are direct evidences for glass production in Bulgaria in the period 1' '- S'h century AD (Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a;). Therefore the aim ofthe present study is to investigate glass finds from the Romanperiod in Bulgaria using Instrumental Neu­ tron Activation Analysis (INAA).

XVI ECONOMIC ROLE OF THE ROMAN ARMY IN THE PROVINCE OF LOWER MOESIA (MOESIA INFERIOR) Michał Duch This books takes a comprehensive look at the Roman army as a factor which prompted substantial changes and economic transformations in the province of Lower Moesia, discussing its impact on the development of particular branches of the economy. The volume comprises five chapters. Chapter One, entitled “Before Lower Moesia: A Political and Economic Outline” consti- tutes an introduction which presents the economic circumstances in the region prior to Roman conquest. In Chapter Two, entitled “Garrison of the Lower Moesia and the Scale of Militarization”, the author estimates the size of the garrison in the province and analyzes the influence that the military presence had on the demography of Lower Moesia. The following chapter – “Monetization” – is concerned with the financial standing of the Roman soldiery and their contri- bution to the monetization of the province. Chapter Four, “Construction”, addresses construction undertakings on which the army embarked and the outcomes it produced, such as urbanization of the province, sustained security and order (as envisaged by the Romans), expansion of the economic market and exploitation of the province’s natural resources. In the final chapter, entitled “Military Logistics and the Local Market”, the narrative focuses on selected aspects of agriculture, crafts and, to a slightly lesser extent, on trade and services. The book demonstrates how the Roman army, seeking to meet its provisioning needs, participated in and contributed to the functioning of these industries.

    Space and Identity in Roman Moesia Space and Identity in Roman Moesia: Rethinking Military and Civilian Spheres in a Frontier Province Lina Diers Defining military and civilian spheres in the Roman province of Moesia is no easy task. Although the province’s numerous military structures along the Danube Limes (fortified but permeable frontier) and in its inland are well-known, there is certainly some confusion when it comes to the embedment of these structures within Moesia’s settlement patterns and particularly their civilian factor. On one hand, epigraphic evidence attests to the common frontier province phenomenon of so-called settlement dualism of canabae (settlement structure featuring soldiers’ families and supply units alongside legionary camps and auxiliary forts) and vici (village/civilian settlement structure ranging between urban and rural character) in all the major legionary camp sites of Moesia. On the other, the state of archaeological research in Moesia does not (or not yet) allow a distinct location or spatial separation of canabae and vici at most sites. Instead, the site conditions rather display surprising degrees of mixing military and civilian administration and living spheres contradicting the concept of settlement dualism. By introducing several examples for this situation, this article discusses if it is useful or even necessary in current modes of post-processual, post/-anti-colonial and identity- oriented discourse in Roman Archaeology to spatially divide military and civilian spheres in clarifying everyday life reality and settlement patterns in Roman Moesia.
