The main sources of information are "excavations or finds, as well as other methods for the study of mankind and the related environment". Archaeological Heritage "includes structures, buildings, groups of buildings, objects, movable and other monuments, and their context, whether on land or under water." Bulgaria owns treasures so deeply hidden even for the most enthusiastic tourists or historians. Such an example is Ulpia Oescus – forgotten ancient Romanian town, central town of the Roman province Moesia Inferior, which remains were found near village of Gigen, District of Pleven. Ulpia Oescus one of the largest and significant towns in the Lower Danube region during the Roman era (II–IV AD), which nowadays is part of the world cultural and historical heritage. • Roman Defence Sites on the Danube River and Environmental Changes
Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XIII 563 Roman defence sites on the Danube River and environmental changes D. Constantinescu Faculty Material’s Science and Engineering, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania Abstract There are many things to learn from the past regarding ancient settlements, the ancient organization of cities, the structures of the buildings and concerning the everyday life of our ancestors. There are numerous sites along the Danube River which were once included in the economic and defensive system of the Roman Empire. Many of them are not well known today or studies are in their very early stages. Sucidava is an example of a Daco-Roman historical defence site, situated on the north bank of the Danube. The ancient heritage site covers more than two hectares; comprising the Roman-Byzantine basilica of the 4th century, the oldest place of worship north of the Danube, the building containing the hypocaust dates from the late 6th century AD, Constantine the Great portal bridge, to span the Danube river, the gates linking the bridge and city, a Roman fountain dating from the 2nd century AD. This entire defensive and communication system stands as a testimony to the complexity of an historical conception. However, how was it possible that such sophisticated structures have been partially or totally destroyed? Certainly not only economic and military aspects might be a likely explanation. The present article considers the evolution of the sites from cultural ecology point of view, as well as taking into consideration environmental and climatic changes. Doubtless, the overall evolution of this site is not singular.

Factors for the Economic Marginalization of the Northwestern Statistical Region and Tools for its Overcoming Original scientific article 338.246(497.2) submitted: 16. X 2016., accepted: 1. XI 2016. doi:10.5937/zrgfub1664131D FACTORS FOR THE ECONOMIC MARGINALIZATION OF THE NORTHWESTERN STATISTICAL REGION AND TOOLS FOR ITS OVERCOMING Dimitar Dimitrov*1 * Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Abstract: The Northwestern statistics re gion is the most backward one in so cial- economic sense in the whole European Union. Its territory is in a process of ac- celerated depopulation. Its demographic structure is charac terized by an inverted age structure of the population. Deteriorated are also the quality and quantity param eters of the factor workforce. The prevailing part of the munici palities in the region have high rate of unemploy- ment. The infrastructure on its territory is in very bad techni cal conditions and with low level of functional interconnection. The qual ity of life of the population as a result of these factors continuously deteri orates. All these unfavorable pro cesses and prob- lems deprive the re gion from potential for a future so cial-economic development. At the same time, this is the Bulgarian region which is geo graphically closer to the “heart land” of the EU. The relative advantages arising from its geograph ic posi- tion and the implementation of certain policies can become factors for the economic growth of this region. In order to generate positive territorial synergy, a pro found analysis of the factors that led to this situation should be car ried out. The article analyses also the fac tors that led to the economic mar ginalization of the Northwestern sta tistics region and it justifies some policies and methods that can lead to its overcome.

  • Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th.

  • Archaeometric Investigation of Roman Glass Finds from Bulgaria Introduction Experimental
Berliner Beiträge zur Archäometrie Seite 183-198 1999 Archaeometric investigation of roman glass finds from Bulgaria I. KULEFF, R. DJINGOVA Faculty of Chemistry, University of Sofia 1126-Sofia, B ulgaria Introduction Glass finds discovered in the European part of the Roman Empaire are usually referred to as Romanglasses while the glass from the Near East and Egypt is considered separately although it has been produced in the same period of time. One of the reasons for this classification isthat glass production in Egypt and the Near East has had a long tradition while the knowledge of glassmaking has been introduced in the Roman Empire from Mesopotamia and Egypt and is considered as new for the territories of Italy and the Eastern provinces. The territory of present Bulgaria belongs to these regions. The Iack of enough chemico-thechnological investigations of Roman glass excavated in Italy was recognized in the Iiterature in the early 80-ies (e.g. Goffer, 1980) and it was recently compensated by the investigations carred out by Casoli&Mirti (1992) and Verita&Toninaga (1990). This Iack is stillmorevalid for the glass, excavated on Bulgarian territory where only a sporadic information exists which does not provide an answer to the questions concerning the technology of glassmaking. It is worth mentioning that the finds from that period are numerous (see e.g. Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a; Mincev, 1986; 1988; 1989; 1990; 1992) and there are direct evidences for glass production in Bulgaria in the period 1' '- S'h century AD (Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a;). Therefore the aim ofthe present study is to investigate glass finds from the Romanperiod in Bulgaria using Instrumental Neu tron Activation Analysis (INAA).

Beyond the River, under the Eye of Rome Ethnographic Landscapes, Imperial Frontiers, and the Shaping of a Danubian Borderland by Timothy Campbell Hart A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Greek and Roman History) in the University of Michigan 2017 Doctoral Committee: Professor David S. Potter, Co-Chair Professor Emeritus Raymond H. Van Dam, Co-Chair Assistant Professor Ian David Fielding Professor Christopher John Ratté © Timothy Campbell Hart [email protected] ORCID iD: 0000-0002-8640-131X For my family ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Developing and writing a dissertation can, at times, seem like a solo battle, but in my case, at least, this was far from the truth. I could not have completed this project without the advice and support of many individuals, most crucially, my dissertation co-chairs David S. Potter, and Raymond Van Dam. Ray saw some glimmer of potential in me and worked to foster it from the moment I arrived at Michigan. I am truly thankful for his support throughout the years and constant advice on both academic and institutional matters. In particular, our conversations about demographics and the movement of people in the ancient world were crucial to the genesis of this project. Throughout the writing process, Ray’s firm encouragement towards clarity of argument and style, while not always what I wanted to hear, have done much to make this a stronger dissertation. David Potter has provided me with a lofty academic model towards which to strive. I admire the breadth and depth of his scholarship; working and teaching with him have shown me much worth emulating.
