Scoping study: applicability of PIR systems to mine waters in Eastern and Southern Europe 151 27 SCOPING STUDY: APPLICABILITY OF PIR SYSTEMS TO MINE WATERS IN EASTERN AND SOUTHERN EUROPE 27.1 Project: PIRAMID C. Wolkersdorfer1, A. Hasche1, J. Tschapek1, M. Veselič2, M. Leblanc3 1University Freiberg, Germany 2Institute for Mining, Geotechnology and Environment, Slovenia 3Université Montpellier, France 27.2 Executive Summary Mining in Europe has great influence of the environment. A significant problem in many EU Member States and EU candidate countries is the long-term water pollution from abandoned mines and associated industrial sites. Sources of water pollution are e.g. pyrite oxidation, metal leaching by surface water or rain and leaching of residual process chemicals in the tailings. In order to reach today’s ecological standards polluted mine water needs to be treated in technical water treatment systems (conventional method). Water treatment will be necessary for a long time, consequently conventional methods will not be economically efficient. Key objectives of PIRAMID are to draw developments of passive, ecologically-friendly in-situ remedial methods for mining waters together and to support the development of new tech- niques and innovations in order to apply such technologies to a variety of of polluted mine waters. This report gives an overview of mine water problems in selected EU Member States and Accession States in Eastern and Southern Europe and assesses the potential applicability of passive treatment methods and where such methods are already applied. For most existing mining sites in the reviewed countries the applicability of passive treatment methods is possible. Furthermore, in France, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic ex- periences with different passive treatment methods e.g.

• Roman Defence Sites on the Danube River and Environmental Changes
Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XIII 563 Roman defence sites on the Danube River and environmental changes D. Constantinescu Faculty Material’s Science and Engineering, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania Abstract There are many things to learn from the past regarding ancient settlements, the ancient organization of cities, the structures of the buildings and concerning the everyday life of our ancestors. There are numerous sites along the Danube River which were once included in the economic and defensive system of the Roman Empire. Many of them are not well known today or studies are in their very early stages. Sucidava is an example of a Daco-Roman historical defence site, situated on the north bank of the Danube. The ancient heritage site covers more than two hectares; comprising the Roman-Byzantine basilica of the 4th century, the oldest place of worship north of the Danube, the building containing the hypocaust dates from the late 6th century AD, Constantine the Great portal bridge, to span the Danube river, the gates linking the bridge and city, a Roman fountain dating from the 2nd century AD. This entire defensive and communication system stands as a testimony to the complexity of an historical conception. However, how was it possible that such sophisticated structures have been partially or totally destroyed? Certainly not only economic and military aspects might be a likely explanation. The present article considers the evolution of the sites from cultural ecology point of view, as well as taking into consideration environmental and climatic changes. Doubtless, the overall evolution of this site is not singular.

  • Archaeometric Investigation of Roman Glass Finds from Bulgaria Introduction Experimental
Berliner Beiträge zur Archäometrie Seite 183-198 1999 Archaeometric investigation of roman glass finds from Bulgaria I. KULEFF, R. DJINGOVA Faculty of Chemistry, University of Sofia 1126-Sofia, B ulgaria Introduction Glass finds discovered in the European part of the Roman Empaire are usually referred to as Romanglasses while the glass from the Near East and Egypt is considered separately although it has been produced in the same period of time. One of the reasons for this classification isthat glass production in Egypt and the Near East has had a long tradition while the knowledge of glassmaking has been introduced in the Roman Empire from Mesopotamia and Egypt and is considered as new for the territories of Italy and the Eastern provinces. The territory of present Bulgaria belongs to these regions. The Iack of enough chemico-thechnological investigations of Roman glass excavated in Italy was recognized in the Iiterature in the early 80-ies (e.g. Goffer, 1980) and it was recently compensated by the investigations carred out by Casoli&Mirti (1992) and Verita&Toninaga (1990). This Iack is stillmorevalid for the glass, excavated on Bulgarian territory where only a sporadic information exists which does not provide an answer to the questions concerning the technology of glassmaking. It is worth mentioning that the finds from that period are numerous (see e.g. Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a; Mincev, 1986; 1988; 1989; 1990; 1992) and there are direct evidences for glass production in Bulgaria in the period 1' '- S'h century AD (Kabakhcieva, 1987; 1996; 1997; 1997a;). Therefore the aim ofthe present study is to investigate glass finds from the Romanperiod in Bulgaria using Instrumental Neu tron Activation Analysis (INAA).

Beyond the River, under the Eye of Rome Ethnographic Landscapes, Imperial Frontiers, and the Shaping of a Danubian Borderland by Timothy Campbell Hart A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Greek and Roman History) in the University of Michigan 2017 Doctoral Committee: Professor David S. Potter, Co-Chair Professor Emeritus Raymond H. Van Dam, Co-Chair Assistant Professor Ian David Fielding Professor Christopher John Ratté © Timothy Campbell Hart [email protected] ORCID iD: 0000-0002-8640-131X For my family ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Developing and writing a dissertation can, at times, seem like a solo battle, but in my case, at least, this was far from the truth. I could not have completed this project without the advice and support of many individuals, most crucially, my dissertation co-chairs David S. Potter, and Raymond Van Dam. Ray saw some glimmer of potential in me and worked to foster it from the moment I arrived at Michigan. I am truly thankful for his support throughout the years and constant advice on both academic and institutional matters. In particular, our conversations about demographics and the movement of people in the ancient world were crucial to the genesis of this project. Throughout the writing process, Ray’s firm encouragement towards clarity of argument and style, while not always what I wanted to hear, have done much to make this a stronger dissertation. David Potter has provided me with a lofty academic model towards which to strive. I admire the breadth and depth of his scholarship; working and teaching with him have shown me much worth emulating.
